My 920c has the same huge cartridges (78 tricolor and 15 black), and yes they do cost quite some money. They used to be insanely expensive, now they come at 30 bucks per cartridge I think, which is at least 50% more than what you pay for a more modern day printer cartridge.
The black one prints +/- 495 pages of text. The tricolor one should last 450 pages.
I think these still stand their ground with 2400*1200 dpi printing. Use photopaper and it'll look even better. I love my HP 920c :)
I only had two printers in my life (been on the comp since 1994). My very first was a Canon Bubblejet 200, poor old thing, 360dpi and I throw it away last year. I feel sad, lol. Been my pall till I got a HP Deskjet 920c about 9 years ago. It's almost identical to the one in the clip.
Those Deskjet 900 series printers were nearly bulletproof. They'll run forever as long as you keep the service station clean (the mechanism that cleans & parks the cartridges). My dad has a Deskjet 990Cse that my family bought in ~2001 with over 35,000 pages printed. It leaked ink at one point, but replacing the service station fixed it. It uses the blue light to also sense the paper type.
I recently found a "kaput" Deskjet 952c which was easily revived with a service station cleanout.
Nice video, but this is definitely not one of the first "color inkjet" printers ever made. I bought one of these new in 2000, and yes, it was one of HP's last "well built" printers. The carts are huge, however, they run down quickly, due to the high waste printer engine. HP's first color inkjet came out in 1987 and was branded "PaintJet." The first inkjet printers were the ThinkJet series, and were very small and reliable. This is one of the first that could be considered "photo quality" though
@bbishoppcm I believe this was also one of the first HP DeskJets to be a "dumb" printer with no internal memory, relying entirely on Windows or Mac software to print. Thus they could not be used directly from DOS anymore.
I still see printers like that being used because like you said, "They're built like tanks"! I have a HP Deskjet 890c and an 895cxi, and those worked the last time I used them which was over a year ago! So those would need new cartridges by now! :) One of these days I'll get new cartridges in them and I'll make videos of them so you can see how well those perform. :) I love the size of the cartridges they made back then compared to the small ones used in printers now.
@Lachlant1984 The blue light is so the printer knows if the heads are aligned correctly. The iMac is a 400 MHz PowerPC G3 with 512MB of RAM. It is the later model with the slot-loading DVD-ROM drive.
I have a HP deskjet 940c it still works great.

2000? I wouldn't call it one of the first color inkjet printers. I have a deskjet 600C from 1995, and I still think there were many before that.

btw, why not just refill the cartridges? you can do that almost infinite amount of times, and it's significantly cheaper than buying factory ones.

I wonder if that blue light allows the printer to determine if the ink cartridges and heads are alligned correctly. What kind of iMac is that?
