  • Nicole Kidman is like old hollywood actresses, she can act (Extremly good), she can sing (pretty damned good) and she has the looks, what more can hollywood want from her

  • @Pitufita1993

yes, she is like the actresses from the golden age, though perhaps a little nice in comparison. what i like best about nicole is that she is completely fearless; she takes huge risks when choosing roles and films, when almost every other a or b list actress plays it totally safe.

  • Are you all kidding me! Listen to Elaine Paige sing it correctly!

  • I am a soprano, but lower voices performance this song is the best.

  • This is my favorite version. I think her performance and the music are great. It's a wonderful love song. :)

  • This is my favorite version. I think her performance and the music are great.

  • i love nicole kidman's voice !!!!!!!

  • I love this version of the song. I've heard other versions and this is the best I've heard. Those high voices sound blah. Nicole was spot on with her low sorrowful voice. Pity she can't sing as high pitched as she did in Moulin Rouge though. THAT would have been something. lolz She was the best in that movie in this one though she is still amazing!

  • Touching your soul...

  • hell this song stuck in my head for a week ... amazing song :)

  • @salemyou Sounds better in a higher key.

  • Her voice may be lower than most would like for this number but she brings something fresh to it. Plus I'm a bit biased to Alto's. Too many years of only sopano's singing take it's toll on ones ears. and I agree with thecluephone that there is a certain nolstagic feel. Her character was talked about with such alure and suspence that when she finally does appear itsthe big moment . Nicole delivers what everyone would expect from her a star preformance and nothing lees would do for her.

  • Nicole Kidman continues to surprise me with the breadth of her talents. I love the way she sings this song, full of meaning and expression. She holds a note beautifully (as in the "why" around 1:30). Her performance was so alluring that I only wished her part called for being on screen much longer.

  • In a very unusual way I think I'm in love with Nicole Kidman!

  • She has one of the most beautiful voices on the planet...

  • I like the song a lot more this way... it seems more sincere, lower. The emotion is a lot stronger, sounds like it actually comes from the heart.

  • She "acts" this song masterfully!

  • Why do people have to 'critique' everything can't they just enjoy it...:) and here's my two cents since everyone has started...is it reall that low? and who cares? As for saying she is not a singer, well she sung and sung in tune I'd say she's actually a very good singer. She certainly sounded good with Robbie williams and in moulin rouge was very nice as well. Good for her!

  • this is luscious.

  • i love nicole kidman, she is amazing. Nine, Australia, Moulin Rouge. She is soo good. And this low song, compared to the soprano's on moulin rouge, show and support just how talented this woman is. Love her!

  • normally, i loathe it when hollywood changes the key to bway songs, but in this case, i guess it's fairly fitting for the song. however, i still do like the orig key much better

  • what a terrible movie, Nicole saved it for me from being a total waste, she displayed such gravity and grace.

  • I just love the way Nicole sings the song. It touches me. I wanna sing it in that same register. I feel more comfortable singing in the lower range of my voice.

  • I sing this in the lower register as well. I'm on youtube as rachelwolfmusic and click the "Unusual Way" video.

  • i love her voice:)

  • I like her voice from a movie musical standpoint...but her voice really isn't cut out for live stage work. Which is why she does moviesss!

  • She sounds great. Tone is awsome. Shes got musical talent, thats for sure.

  • If I could sing half as well as people in these sorts of things can, I would NEVER shut up ^^ great movie, LOVE the music, thanks for posting!

  • like it, and love nicole but not a patch on barbra streisands version!!

  • Kidmans voice reminds me of lisa Ekhdahl vem vet song.. Like the lower voices too..

  • I love this song and I love Nicole Kidman...I didn't like this version at first, due to the change. It's a soprano song and this woman is clearly alto. STILL, it's a good change...just took me a bit to get used to. xD

  • Nicole Kidman <3

  • Is amazing nicole(: I love her <3

  • beautiful, I love it! She has a bell like quality to her voice that I love!

  • la amooooooooooooooo

  • In a very unusual way i want to cry during this song

    <3

  • Sorry Nicole, Sorry Barbra... the definitive version of this song is CLEARLY Karen Akers' from the original Broadway cast.

  • @soundhoundvt Except Karen Akers plays Luisa in the original Broadway cast. She recorded the song on the album In a Very Unusual Way, but I would hardly consider it definitive. Then again, I don't see how any one person can say which version is "CLEARLY" the definitive one.

  • @archer83 Laura Benanti's version in the B'way revival was just about near perfect.

.....if not perfect. Original key and clear as a bell.

  • @davidlysander I agree with you. Laura's version is definitely my favorite. I like this one too, and I don't really have an issue with it being in a lower key, but Laura's was more haunting, imo. I feel she got into the song more-and that's why I'm judging it on, not the acting (though Nicole Kidman does act well in this song, too)

  • I think people just have a hard time enjoying a woman with a lower voice because everyone is trying to be a Soprano I and all the guys are trying to be Tenor I and there is a really beautiful thing in the lower voices.

    I love this version.

  • @hotwaiter I AGREE WITH YOU TOTALLY:).. Since I have a nice tenor as a woman which is a bit disconcerting to the listeners..

  • @hotwaiter Hmm. Nothing to do with it reazlly. It's about where your singing voice sits naturally, and you find that out after a bit of training and hard work. Alto voices are truly rare and very, very beautiful. This is not a trained contralto voice, it's just speak-singing in a low register because she's not a trained singer. It's not ugly, and it works as it has a sexy sound. But it was written in a higher key for a reason, meant to reflect a younger sound. This sounds like an old voice.

  • @pianomags I understand that, and Nicole herself said she doesn't like her own singing voice, but I find that even though it was written higher there is a more serious tone that comes out in a lower voice. It's more haunting...reflective and mature as you said. I guess I get a fuller meaning out of this song when it's sung like this. But high or low it's a beautiful song.

  • @hotwaiter I do too!! I heard Barbara Streisand singing it much higher and I have to say, I LOVE Nicole's smokey voice....very, very sexy.

  • @hotwaiter She's mezzo soprano so it's high but also low,...get what i mean? not high enough to be soprano, not low enough to be entirely alto. i'm mezzo too!

  • @hotwaiter I love what you said. I couldn't agree with you more. I love the low voices, it's so sensual and emotional.

  • @MuzicBabe toni braxton has one of the best voices music has known, and you cant get much lower than that.

  • wahoo! ça fait du bien de retrouver la voix de Nicole Kidman comme dans "moulin rouge!" !(meme si cette chansons ne vaut largement pas par exemple "one day i fly away" )

  • I think Nicole sounds AMAZING in this. I actually like this version better than the original. When it's the octave up, it seems too operatic. It's much more heartfelt to me in this key. I love it. : )

  • @heringtonchick i agree! one of the best songs i have heard nicole sing!

  • @heringtonchick I completely agree!!

  • I will agree with you on one point: she needs to stop using botox. However, you don't really need acting lessons if you've won an Oscar. Those people aren't stupid.

  • Uh, honey, not every Oscar winner has talent. I can name countless actors/actresses off the top of my head who are talentless yet have Oscars.

  • Okay. You're entitiled to your own opinion just like I am to mine. Let's leave it at that.

  • Fine. But let me ask you this, do you think people like Cuba Gooding Jr. or Jennifer Hudson have amazing talent? Both of them are Oscar winners and have zero talent if you ask me.

  • I believe that they are both very talented. I will admit that Cuba's Oscar for Jerry McGuire is a little weird to me, but Jennifer deserves every amount of praise for her performance in Dreamgirls. Like I said, though, we are both entitled to our own opinions. : )

  • Jennifer Hudson has talent at SINGING, acting, she is merely an amateur, and her Oscar win proves if your performance is hyped up enough, you can win.

  • @ItBrandonSilver obvious troll is obvious

  • Obvious IDIOT is obvious.

  • @ItBrandonSilver yes. obvious idiot is obvious. and it is quite obvious you're one :D

  • @heringtonchick people, just watch Moulin Rouge....

  • Yeah, seriously. That movie is AMAZING.

  • nicole acting is great and also she sings nice, not a great singer but i agree she sings from his heart, this is a great movie for the ones who enjoy musicals if you are not don't see it or rent the dvd

  • great actors, great effect and musical performance in the movie, but the story line wasn't too dramatic for the talent of the actors.

  • I looooooved watching this movie and enjoyed every single song! It actually moved me a lot. I will go watch it again with my mom.

Nicole's voice is very sincere..they all sing from the heart., I think that's why people enjoyed this movie.

  • Not very many people enjoyed this movie, judging from critic reviews and box office results. Even in my own theater, the second it ended, someone said "thank god!", and even I didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped, even if I think its a decent movie.

  • I think it was the plot that drove people a way. The performances were great though and I think that makes up for it.

  • I believe the plot drove people away too, and while the performances were great, I don't believe that makes up for it. The music, acting, and setpieces were good, but the plot was just so bad it heavily dragged down the overall quality of the film. Like I said, it was decent, but if the plot was better, it could've been a great movie, maybe another Chicago.

  • This is beautiful. Oh Nicole Kidman..why so amazing ?

  • I saw nine today and I thought nicole was amazing! she always amazes me in films! the song was just great and she looked absolutly gorgeous!

  • sounds poor. and boring. as if its very easy to sing it.

the original version of unusual way shows how brilliannt this song can be...she has not got the voice for it.

  • I agree, watch?v=0P5q89QqDWk and feel the difference.

  • I agree. It was never about whether she could sing well, they book the face/body etc. Is a brilliant , tricky show song best done by a professional., a real show-stopper. But hey she did her best and I bet she's very aware of her vocal limitations.

  • Nicole Kidman sings this song in such a

sweet wholesome manner that ir recalls

    Marilyn Monroe singing HAPPY BIRTHDAY

to President Kennedy in 1962. " Now I can

retire after having this sung in such a sweet wholesome manner"

Cant wait to see this film. Looks great.

  • ok....while kidman wasn't terrible in this song, i can hear that they lowered the key for her. I personally think they lowered the key WAAAYYY too much, and it took away from the full effect it could've had on the audience. you guys should youtube other versions of this song, and you'll see how great it really is.

  • I have never thought Nicole star material, but I am Australian & can vividly recall her prior to fame, hence I will concede any accusations of bias. Nicole served as the catalyst in Lewis' recognition of higher truth, perhaps even his alter ego, embodying that there is no success without loss, nor pleasure without pain. Her timely cameo was vital to the plot & was delivered with superb emotion; to upstage Lewis is no small feat & for the briefest of moments she did it.. Thank you:)

  • @bobbyBollyfan Oh my. Anyone who has seen Moulin Rouge would agree that Nicole has star quality. Even if you can't stand musicals. She's not a singer, but man oh man she was stunningly beautiful. And she's a suburb actress. I was pleasantly surprised by this song. I think lowering the key for her was an excellent idea. It gives the song a more bittersweet, nostalgic tone. Better than the grandstanding, belted-out torch song that many stage actresses would go for.

  • Greetings thecluephone:) Great comment. I own Moulin Rouge; who can forget those eyes & their mystique? I have always thought it far less appreciated than it should be & what I really like is that these days Nicole can delight & surprise at times effortlessly, something that she has developed over the years; as she ages, her aura will mature & those eyes will continue to work their magic. Yes, she does not sing that well, but if this is any indication even that will acquire divinity in time:)

  • @thecluephone I agree with you totally . I think the song sounds better sung in the lower key.... it feels more emotional and there is much more depth in it..

  • A lot of people didn't like Nicole Kidman because her part wasn't very big. I thought it was no different than the other female roles. Each of them had their own song. I mean all of the actresses appeared periodically throughout the film. Kidman was seen in flashbacks...I really liked her performance and I don't see why everyone thought that her role was small because it wasn't that bad.

  • @RajaMCool Catherine Zeta Jones was offered the role by Marshall and she said no because the part was too small...she asked Marshall to write more for her but he declined saying that it would not work.

  • @jojo34209 u sound jealous of nicole kidman..why don't you just check yourself first in the mirror hahahahaha

  • jojo34209 u sound malevolent and envious LOL

  • i love Nicole Kidman

  • ok i dont know who answer my msn , ufff well it doesnt said nothing wrong , so is OK , i do love nicole , and i know that the movie is doing really bad , but i am happy because it is not for her, she is only 5 minutes on it , the weight is on daniel, marion, and penelope ( which i dont like), , nicole , sophia and fergie are not even in the movie and that was the big mistake. anywayssss , love nicole , love how she sings and love her as a person byeeeee

  • i love nicole kidman i wish i could meet her shes my idole

  • I don't understand what is so wrong about this movie. Where is the bandwagon? I don't want to jump on, just wondering, cause it didn't go past me.

  • Jesussss stop comparing it to the original. They aren't saying 'come and watch exactly the same film and musical that has been made before'. It is a remake, and you don't do it in exactly the same way, you put your own spin on it. Nicole doesn't have to sing it in the exact same way as it has been done before, she is making it her own, and it's good, so stop comparing it and enjoy it for what it is.

  • That is the problem, the movie and the singing of this song are missing everything that made the play and the revival great. With original work you can get away with things, but when you are reinterpreting existing material, it has to be at least as good if not better.

  • I know that her Oscar was for the hours, I never said otherwise. And no, not necessarily. By remaking a film or whatever you are making it your own, not copying it exactly, so it's not going to be exactly the same, what the fuck would be the point in making an exact copy? You can't seem to accept anyone elses opinion but your own, I was just pointing out that her films are not flops and though she may not have oscars for all, she has many awards

  • YES YOU DID, YOU SAID "OSCARS" , PLURAL, MORE THAN ONE.

You are far more stubborn than you say I am, on top of being close-minded, wrong and missing the point completely.

  • They should have had her dubbed over her with somebody talented.

  • i actually prefer the range and how she sang this song than any of the other versions ive heard. Sure, some notes aren't carried exactly right and shes off on her verbrato, but her voice is so lovely, its very very very bearable. ive been listening to this song repeatedly.

  • Nicole Kidman is hands down the best actress since the silent actresses of the 20s- no one can touch her, NO one! And the fact that she has an Oscar (for the best performance of all time as legend Virginia Woolf in "Hours, The")- amazing. Im crying now as I type this.

"It scares me so, that I can hardly speak"- Brought tears to my white lily eyes. No other actor in HISTORY could do what she did here.

  • Nicole Kidman should just retire gracefully after her string of flops. She definitely shouldn't sing either. I look forward to seeing this film, I just hope she hasn't ruined it. She is one of the most overrated actresses...I can't watch her anymore.

  • Her string of flops...I suggest you check out her portfolio....check out her awards for Moulin Rouge how 'bad' people must have thought it is...her oscars speak for themselves.

  • Her OSCARS? She only won one, for THE HOURS. Bewitched, Birth, Dogville, The Stepford Wives, The Golden Compass, The Human Stain, Australia, The Invasion, Birthday Girl, Fur; a lot of flops in that resume, and now she can ad NINE to that list of flops, considering how lackluster and ill-conceived the movie is.

  • @jojo34209

i offer my respect to u

  • those may have been "flops", but she won rave reviews for "birth", "dogville" and "margot at the wedding", and mainly glowing reviews for "birthday girl", "fur" and "australia" (if you don't count those who are clearly biased and wrote the whole film review based on the notion that shes had too much botox.

  • Rave? Glowing? All that COKE has really fried your brain to the point of denial.

  • no, i think you are just being pig headed. go look on rotten tomatoes or metacritic.

its widely believed nicole only missed oscar nominations for "dogville" and "birth" because of the controversy surrounding both films. one was completely anti-american and the other touched a disturbing subject with close detail.

  • And you are being blinded by your own selfish ignorance, you are not able to be objective about the whole thing, and the fact that your brain is useless with all that blow you do.

  • okay little boy/girl. if i really were a cocaine addict, i'd still be considered more reasonable than you here, and thats something that should bring you shame.

  • Whatever makes you happy, crazy little fag.

  • wow takes you a while to get out what you're trying to say exactly. You call me close minded ha, you're the one getting aggressive with everyone on here and insulting. Have I called you names? No, yet you chose to call me stupid based on nothing than your own assumption just because I do not want to agree with the fact that Nicole's films were supposedly 'flops'.

  • Comment removed

  • Pfft as if that's any kind of indication, I respond to a comment when I see your name, unless your not intelligent enough to follow? As some of your comments have been removed by the author I'm not going to waste time searching for specific ones. I'm gonna ignore your ignorance now, as if you know anything about me from a few comments, I think you're the one being unreasonable, not me, now I'm going to ignore any further comments, because you're a narrow minded twat.

  • Bravo to sweetsuzie100 above

You got it and her perfectly

You must be quite a soul

    Best, 8222ron

  • I prefer this range.

  • Bravo Nicole! A simply beautiful touching performance.... with words that touch your soul. The voice of an angel.....

This has become my new bedtime lullaby. Sweet dreams!

  • this is pretty good, but I like the Griffith Frank version better.

  • Strange...she did better on moulin rouge soundtrack. :-/ I'm quite disapointed...

Anyway, the version I definitely want to hear is John Barrowman's one !! It'll be on his next album :D can't wait

  • I think it´s a pitty that she played this part, why didn´t they take someone from broadway? Someone who is able to sing it in the right key. But I am hoping her acting is so good she makes up for it!

  • Nope, the movie is lackluster, very frustrating considering the cast and the great Sophia Loren. A good example that MORE does not mean BETTER.

  • jojo I think you are hepped up on goofballs

  • How come?

  • Because anyonee who doesn't like this film is no longer entitled to their own opinion. I didnt make the rules!

  • LOL, talk about a goofball ah? It is your choice not to be objective about this and to overlook the obvious.

Interesting you picked my comment to respond to, considering all the other comments in here that show the same frustration and letdown this movie has proven to be.

  • Um, I'm sure the original isn't an octave higher? Sorry if i'm wrong but surely she could do it at pitch?

  • where can i find the soundtrack????please answer me...!!! if you are afraid of c.r answer me in private,....thank you

  • @knightLynderic u can get it at best buy they have alot of soundtracks there i saw it 2days ago at barnes and noble also

  • thanks...I found it...

  • No disrespect to the lovely Miss Kidman, but Barbra Streisand and Linda Eder run circles many times over and around this version. No wonder the movie is underperfomring badly. Very lackluster performance of such an important number of the play.

  • Streisand can only sing through her nose. She is extremely overrated.

  • That is what all the ignorant jealous people have to say, typical rubbish.

  • here here, stop comparing, it's it's own movie, she's her own person, she's not claiming to sound the same as them

  • idk i thought it was pretty good lol :)

  • It was first recorded an octave higher and they didnt like it so made her re-do it, probably her voice was too thin.

They had to hire Nicole for her box office appeal not for her singing skills. Broadway and London stages are full of much better singers..that no one would pay to see in a movie.

  • I agree that she hasn't got the best voice, and this version doesn't immediately touch you - it didn't me when I heard it. Today I saw the movie, however, and this song is played in parts in between dialogue and combined with the atmosphere in the film and everything it was breathtakingly haunting, even without the fantastic voice. What I think people often forget is that a musical is not a collection of sings threaded together with a story. It's a story threaded together with songs. Great movie

  • Her voice sounded alot better in Moulin Rouge. it still sounds good, but she needs more high notes.

  • i dont really care what you think off the song youy have to love nicole kidman she is brilliant and mesmirising

  • Agree, i loved! her in moulin rouge

  • Do you mean MESMERIZING? There is a spell check in here when you type stuff like that.

  • True not that great but this song is supposed to portray more emotion and feeling and agreeing with Aeternam9583 it seems that they wanted to portray the true feeling of the song. If we are telling some one that they honestly make us whole with tears in our eyes nine times out of ten if we sung it we would not sound that great..She's a great actress and it flies in the movies

  • missed out 'like' in 'I like Nicole's version' in the comment below :/

  • I miss Streisand's rendition as performed in her last concert.

  • I've heard many versions of this song - including a great version sang by a man (Jerome Pradon) - and I actually Nicole's version a lot. In my opinion, there are too many 'operatic' versions of it and this makes a welcome change.

  • If you like this song, please listen to my version! The sound quality isn't great but I would love feedback.

  • NIcole's fine, but for an amazing version of a beautful song, please listen to Laura Benanti's version....heaven! Truly gives chills!

  • OMGOSH LAURA BENANTI!! she's amazing. she was really good in wedding singer. of course, i never seen the musical. but i have the album

  • No one can sing this song like Linda! I am sure that Kidman will nail the performance...the musicality....not so much.

  • You know what all of you who think she can't sing, I bet you can't either.... She has a gorgeous voice and definitely deserves this part!!!! She IS an amazing vocalist and yes, maybe she doesn't sing like the original but hell shes GOT a VOICE TO REMEMBER!!!!

  • actually, I do know how to sing, and I know this isn't great singing in any way. There are tons of musical theater actresses who can act AND sing this very well- Linda Eder, Chrissy Knoll, lots of them. This is just lame and ridiculous. I hate all these movies that bastardize and ruin great musicals.

  • chill out.

This might not be amazing but its good.

    Stop whining.

  • I myself am a huge musical theater person both performing, vocal directing, directing, etc.

There is a difference in what works on the stage and what works in the movies. This would not fly entirely for a Broadway audience but it will work better in the movie theater. Her vocal technique is not purely classical but that does not make it entirely bad.

I think that it's better to expose the masses to the art of theater in whatever ways we can. Even if that means a slight change in style.

  • I agree whole heartedly.... ESPECIALLY this song.... This song is supposed to be a nice alto song, and picking a breathy soprano to sing it was a bad choice.... Have you seen the movie yet? Fergy and his wife are the best!

  • It's actually ideal for a Mezzo. They changed the key quite a bit for the film. It's in Dbm on the broadway revival cast album with Laura Benanti singing. They dropped it way down to Fm for Nicole Kidman in the film. Her voice is naturally quite thin. That's all.

  • Could not be better said, the movie has proven very lackluster, not even its intended target audience are having much good to say about it. Sure is a far cry from Chicago, Dreamgirls, Hairspray or Mamma Mia.

  • I wish it was in the original key, but I actually really enjoy this version. It suits her voice, she was appropriately cast. I'm very excited for this film.

  • anyone that knows about the musical NINE, that knows about this song.. and that knows about music.... knows that Nicole Kidman destroyed this song.

  • i agree. There is so much un-tapped power in this song that just can't be communicated in this key, by a non singer. This is a singers song. Nicole is a GREAT actress, and I am sure did her very best, but I wanted more...

  • I would not go so strong as to say she destroyed it, but definitely considering how great this song has been performed by the likes of Barbra Streisand (live, no less) and Linda Eder, this version by Nicole is a huge comedown, and look how the movie is underperforming awfully; what a bad blow for all involved.

  • thanks for uploading!:). where did you get this from? x

  • I Love Nicole Kidman she was ameazing in Moulin Rouge and she will be Wonderful in Nine I can´t wait to see it

  • am sorry cupidproducctions , NICOLE KIDMAN IS NOT A SINGER SHE IS A ACTRESS , she never can sing like sreisand or minelli , but her job is great

  • Nicole Kidman is so beautiful! I love her voice. It is so soothing and pretty!

  • I know i just smile whenever i hear her singing voice, it is so recognizeable to me(in a good way). FAVORITE ACTRESS OF ALLL TIMEE!

  • so true.

  • the best song about this film nicole ROCKS
