  • Jazz III's are nice but you can pick almost as fast and easily with normal picks. The thing is with proper technique you shouldn't "choke back." I mean I like jazz III's too but the only problem you have if you can't pick fast enough is your technique. grip all picks close to the tip and your economy of motion gets better. That's just good technique...

  • I'm loving that accent!

  • Pick stealing Thief !

  • Can someone help me? I want to get into soloing, but I find with doing solid rock or metal rhythm, I would think you would need a flexible pick to be able to strum the string well. I think thick picks would be great for soloing, but flexible pick for rhythm. Any suggestions?

  • too much choking up on the pick.

  • think for yourself. to each his or her own.

  • man your accent is awesome

  • Yepp i use jazz picks aswell when iám playing really fast. There are smaller so i fell i have alot more controll of the sound and speed bec you have your picking hand alot closer to the strings then regular picks. Check my video of speed picking.

  • the point is the point lol. of the pick and composition

  • Thanks for the advice. I've been playing for years but you seem to be right. Thanks man

  • The explaination is good, but show me one guy holding a pick that far as in 1:31. Normaly you'd grip it more towards the end.

  • it was just an exageration to prove a point.

  • thish video really shucks

  • I usually use 20 mm picks

  • That's freakin 2cms

  • @MrXorHomer

    sorry, I meant 2.0 mm

  • shtrings u know :))

  • thanks but you should have played to show the dfiference which would have helped :)

  • All about the jazz III bitches! hell yeah.

  • hey check out the new 'glass guitar picks' vids.. New pick=New Soundz=progression... lol

  • I Use Dunlop 8.5

  • I use Dunlop 8.5 and 1 mm

  • i use the lil jazzer by red bear trading, they are awesome!

  • jazz lll plectrums are just the best plectrums you can by once i started using them my whole playing transformed i have been using them for months and my playing ust gets better and better!!!

  • I've got Jazz III too. definitely the best.

  • I Use the jazz III Pick too!

    Yaaay

  • yeee well there is just nothing that even comes close to a jazz lll.

  • awesome lesson, dude!!!

i was wondering... is jazz iii very easy to get used to?

  • it's not too bad to adjust to, but it does take some adjusting.

    thx for the comment

  • PEOPLE.!! I wasted years asking everyone what to use and what to do?? It all boils down to personal pref. Do what feels right to you and PRACTICE PRACTICE. EVH himself could tell you something and that doesn't mean it would work for you.....P-R-A-C-T-I-C-E!!!!!!!!

  • I agree. matter of fact I said that same thing in this video.

but that doesn't mean than anybody looking to learn more about the options available to them shouldn't be watching this.

  • Yeah buddy, Don't misunderstand me I meant no disrespect. Iv'e picked up alot from people on youtube and other places. I just finally learned that you don't have to look to others to see what to do. Make your own rules and make your own technique (spelling). Thanks for the vid. and Keep pickin'

  • I have only watched about 30 seconds and already i think that this is a waste of time. If youre gonna play on a regular pick then you dont have to hold it all the way at the top of it. you can choke off a little more and just leave the point sticking out. Less force to get it past the string. And the way i saw you holding it...I hang with guitarists all the time. I may hold the pick weird sometimes but i havent seen anyone hold it like i saw you hold it.

  • so what do you want, a cookie? a medal for hanging around guitarists?

this video is from a long time ago. it doesn't matter how I was holding the pick, i was just making a point that the jazz III picks are better built and suited for playing fast. you wanna choke up on your pick? be my guest.

one off detail that wasn't even the focus of the video doesn't make this a waste of time.

  • great vid but i wish there where just a bit more of ligth :S

  • thanks man i was so freakin out about this shit i was about to shit my pants until i found this video

  • dunlop H3 are what i use and i think the are made of a better material, they are thick and are smaller than a standered pick. I like thick so i can play fast! :-)

  • So that's where my alien pick went!!!!! lol

  • i got some of those alien picks , acutally they make glow in the dark ones too

  • alien pick rock!!!!

  • jazz picks 4 LIFE!!!!!

  • Man where's the LIGHT!!!

  • i live in the dungeon lol. idk man, it's plenty bright enough to see down here, but for some reason it shows up way darker on camera.

  • im gonna buy a jackson king V and probably sell my samick cobra. are the king V:s good?

  • I've never played one, but I've heard good things. My friend has a Rhoads V, he likes it and so does everyone that plays it.

  • i use a dunlop jazz 3 pick

  • thanks heaps. its eliminated ALOT of confusion about fast playing.

  • TNX 4 THE ADVICE SIRE...

  • Lol yeah, that makes prank calling all the more fun. Cant say i havent done it myself. its fun to set the modulation to tremolo and turn depth knob to 100% and E. Level knob to 100% and the rate to about 75%

  • lol I'll have to try that one

  • they said to angle the pick when alternate picking, but when i do that, it makes less noise...and when i dont angle the pick, it just gets stucks between the strings....so should i just slow down or something?

  • It sounds like you're angling your pick too much. You don't want to angle it so much that it looks like this +. It should look more like this /.

There are some good videos of Paul Gilbert explaining it on Youtube somewhere.

  • i thought the same thing about the distortion. but i've played around with it enough to make it sound a little more decent. running it through a tube amp definitly helps a bit (at least with me).

  • Yeah, if you mess around with it you can make the distortion sound better. I really like the effects though. Me and my non-guitar playing friends have fun with it by plugging a mic into the input put it through an amp, then use the octave function on the pedal to make our voices sound weird lol. Kinda retarded, but it's great when you're bored.

  • How do you like using that Boss ME-50?

  • It's pretty cool, I like it. I don't use it that much, but it has some sweet effects. The distortion sucks, so don't buy it that's what you're looking for. It's not the most advanced pedal out there, but you get alot of bang for your buck. I'd give it a rating of 8 out of 10.

  • Like your video's man! Really helpfull :D

    Keep it up!

  • you dont have to hold those big pics like that tho

  • hold them like what

  • I think what he is trying to say is that you dont hold the regular picks at the far fat edge. For example, when I hold a regular pick, there is max 2-3mm sticking out, it all depends on how you hold it. I like both kinds of picks, I use them depending on the mood im in...

  • Ok I see what you mean now. Yeah, you can definately do that. For me, that's not very comfortable, but whatever works for you.

  • I use the jazz 3's too. I just got 20 of the xl j3's too. I've been having some problems with the tremelo picking. I'm trying to limit my arm movement alot and produce the most movement from just the index finger and thumb (not moving the whole hand). Any ideas on how to improve that? I have also had great difficulty with muting. Nice vid.

    Laters.

  • Thanks for the comment.

IMHO, the most efficient way to tremolo pick is to use the wrist. Limiting the movements to only your fingers isn't wrong, but I can't seem to do it at a very fast pace very easily. Anyway, it's possible to use that technique. I would suggest just practicing with it very slowly and try to get used to it as a slower picking technique first.

  • Muting is a bit trickier. No one can entirely tell you how to mute, you just have to mess around and find out what is causing the strings to ring out, and then fix it. It's really a combination of the pick and fret hands. Me personally, for example, if I'm playing on the D string, I use my pick hand to mute the low E and A strings, while using other fingers on my fret hand to mute the G,B, and high E strings. It also helps to have a really narrow picking movement.

  • You stole a pick from your friend OMG you should go to prison you horrible human been...

    Kidding.. Nice vid
