This is hard to listen to... I'm moved by this in a strange way. My greatgrandfather was GermanJew, he traveled to Calif. On the way back to Tenn. he met, married an Apache woman. My grandfather is supposed to have gone back to his people and even traveled w/Geronimo at times. He went back and forth between his Mother's home and his father's in Tenn. & Missouri. He took a wife, had children, one my dad. He died when my dad was only 6 yrs. Older brothers/sister remembered him, not my dad.

Jeff Houser is their political leader. Descendants of Robert and the Ft. Sill Apache oppose Harlyn.
The majority members of the Geronimo family insist Harlyn is not a "true" Geronimo and has no business claiming to speak for the family. "Geronimo" by Angie Debo is an excellent biography and good starting point for studying this era. Ignore everything you've seen in the movies. Geronimo was the dominant member of a small warrior band and was never a chief or tribal leader. Warriors followed him because of his fighting skills, ruthlessness, and psychic visions. He got a lot of credibility after Naiche, the hereditary chief, deferred to his leadership in their final years in & out of San Carlos.
While in Oklahoma, most warriors from Geronimo's band became Born Again Christians in the Dutch Reformed Church. Geronimo had a strong born again experience but quickly relapsed into drinking and gambling and left the church. He died an old man in 1909 with $10,000 in the bank, which was divided among his surviving family members: Daughter Eva at Ft. Sill, OK, son & daughter Robert and Lenna at Mescalero, NM, and his 10th and last wife, Azul.
There are always good & bad people on every side. Many whites during the US-Chiricahua wars were good, honorable, and heroic people. Lt. Charles Gatewood, the officer who negotiated Geronimo's final surrender, was a great hero. Check out Louis Kraft's book "Gatewood & Geronimo". I think Gen. Crook a good man, plus Lt. Britton Davis, George Wratten, and many others. Even Gen. Miles did some good things. He refused Gen. Sheridan's orders to send the band to AZ for trial and execution.
The only opinions that matter in this case are those of the greater Geronimo family, the Ft. Sill Apache (site of Geronimo's grave), and the Mescalero Apache (home base for all direct descendants). All else is empty noise. To date, the majority members of the Geronimo family have filed suit blocking Harlyn's efforts to relocate the grave. Ft. Sill & Mescalero leaders honor their wishes. It features interviews with many Chiricahua descendants living in the Mescalero and Ft. Sill communities. The documentary ignores Harlyn completely. The young Robert Geronimo is featured (His side of the family opposes Harlyn and filed suit stopping his campaigns), plus descendants of Cochise and Naiche, etc.
@thriller79 Unlike Geronimo, Mangas Coloradas was a respected chief and leader of his band of Chiricahua Apaches in southwestern New Mexico in the mid-1800s. His daughter married Cochise and his grandsons were Taza and Naiche. In 1863, early in the US-Chiricahua wars, Mangas was deceived and murdered by the US Army and his large skull sent to a famous phrenologist in NYC. (No one knows where his skull is today.) This is historic fact. The Skull & Bones legend is frat boy fantasy.

@thriller79 The Chiricahua descendants I know, plus most real history I've read, describe Geronimo as very controversial among his people. He was directly responsible for their removal from the Southwest. He rose to power through a leadership vacuum but was never a chief. Whatever Geronimo's status, it was lower than that of Mangas Coloradas. Mangas got a raw deal and was deceived and murdered by the US Army. His fate had much to do with white trash gold hunters, miners, etc.

Both lived on the Mescalero Apache Reservation in southern New Mexico. Geronimo is buried at Ft. Sill, OK. Chiricahua Apaches who remained in that area are known as Ft. Sill Apache. Jeff Houser is their political leader. Descendants of Robert and the Ft. Sill Apache oppose Harlyn.

Geronimo is buried in the Beef Creek cemetery at Ft. Sill, OK, surrounded by the graves of nine family members including his children, grandchildren, etc. It is a sanctified Apache tribal cemetery still in use. If his remains had been dug up in 1918, it would have been big news. No evidence exists it was ever disturbed. The Skull & Bones written account of the "grave robbery" bears no resemblance to the real grave. Their claim is frat boy nonsense. Harlyn is just making foolish noise.

Most Geronimo descendants are private and avoid publicity, and the media has given little coverage to their opposition to Harlyn. Lariat Geronimo is the spokesman for the family opposition to Harlyn. GOOGLE him and you'll find articles about this matter. They successfully stopped Harlyn's campaign to move the Ft. Sill grave.

Harlyn changed his name from Via to Geronimo in middle age. Many Geronimos claim he is not legitimate I assume he is Lenna's grandson as he claims, but I know he does not represent the family and its values. Jeff Houser, leader of the Ft. Sill Apache, supports the family opposition to Harlyn.

Also, read an article from the Santa Fe Reporter titled "The Strange Saga of Geronimo's Skull". It is excellent. I know several Geronimo descendants and have many friends in Mescalero, so I've been aware of the disagreements for a long time. I'm simply reporting on their side of the story, which has been mostly ignored by the media.

Their claim to have his remains is their only "evidence". There is no record Geronimo's grave was robbed in 1918. Also, credible people insist this skull was at the club long before Geronimo's death in 1909. This is all a noisy distraction from the real debate about moving the grave from Ft. Sill to New Mexico.

"Geronimo" by Angie Debo is an excellent biography and good starting point for studying this era. Ignore everything you've seen in the movies. Geronimo was the dominant member of a small warrior band and was never a chief or tribal leader. Warriors followed him because of his fighting skills, ruthlessness, and psychic visions. He got a lot of credibility after Naiche, the hereditary chief, deferred to his leadership in their final years in & out of San Carlos.

While in Oklahoma, most warriors from Geronimo's band became Born Again Christians in the Dutch Reformed Church. Geronimo had a strong born again experience but quickly relapsed into drinking and gambling and left the church. He died an old man in 1909 with $10,000 in the bank, which was divided among his surviving family members: Daughter Eva at Ft. Sill, OK, son & daughter Robert and Lenna at Mescalero, NM, and his 10th and last wife, Azul.

There are always good & bad people on every side. Many whites during the US-Chiricahua wars were good, honorable, and heroic people. Lt. Charles Gatewood, the officer who negotiated Geronimo's final surrender, was a great hero. Check out Louis Kraft's book "Gatewood & Geronimo". I think Gen. Crook a good man, plus Lt. Britton Davis, George Wratten, and many others. Even Gen. Miles did some good things. He refused Gen. Sheridan's orders to send the band to AZ for trial and execution.

The only opinions that matter in this case are those of the greater Geronimo family, the Ft. Sill Apache (site of Geronimo's grave), and the Mescalero Apache (home base for all direct descendants). All else is empty noise. To date, the majority members of the Geronimo family have filed suit blocking Harlyn's efforts to relocate the grave. Ft. Sill & Mescalero leaders honor their wishes. The Skull & Bones scandal is dismissed by most as bunk, as Harlyn's distracting nonsense.

The Geronimo episode of the "We Shall Remain" American Experience series on PBS is being rerun tonight, Nov 8. Check it out. It's really quite excellent. It features interviews with many Chiricahua descendants living in the Mescalero and Ft. Sill communities. The documentary ignores Harlyn completely. The young Robert Geronimo is featured (His side of the family opposes Harlyn and filed suit stopping his campaigns), plus descendants of Cochise and Naiche, etc.

@thriller79 Unlike Geronimo, Mangas Coloradas was a respected chief and leader of his band of Chiricahua Apaches in southwestern New Mexico in the mid-1800s. His daughter married Cochise and his grandsons were Taza and Naiche. In 1863, early in the US-Chiricahua wars, Mangas was deceived and murdered by the US Army and his large skull sent to a famous phrenologist in NYC. (No one knows where his skull is today.) This is historic fact. The Skull & Bones legend is frat boy fantasy.

@thriller79 The Chiricahua descendants I know, plus most real history I've read, describe Geronimo as very controversial among his people. He was directly responsible for their removal from the Southwest. He rose to power through a leadership vacuum but was never a chief. Whatever Geronimo's status, it was lower than that of Mangas Coloradas. Mangas got a raw deal and was deceived and murdered by the US Army. His fate had much to do with white trash gold hunters, miners, etc.

Enough is Enough the US President needs to have compassion upon this matter and concider meeting with the family to discuss what can be done to return the remains of Geronimo. The terrific PBS series "We Shall Remain" is being rerun next week. Check out its Geronimo episode. Interviews with Chiricuhua descendants paint a mostly unflattering portrait of Geronimo. White Pop culture made him a hero and savior. Those here who revere him as a holy saint should study real history versus Hollywood fantasy. Revere instead leaders such as Cochise, Mangas Coloradas, Victorio, even Juh. Naiche is fascinating. Learn about the women warriors, Lozen and Dahteste.

Harlyn's campaigns are essentially dead due to the direct opposition of the majority members of the Geronimo family, and lack of support from the Ft. Sill and Mescalero Apache communities. Lariat Geronimo, spokesman for the family opposition, claims Harlyn is not a true Geronimo and has no right speaking for the family. Many in Ft.
