So when its finished will it still looks that shiny? I hate the thought of it evaporating. What kind of finish could you use that would make that striking look last? I'm new to woodworking and having some trouble finding a good finish. Thanks!
@immanrobinson I'm not an expert, but I don't think naptha does anything to it. It's just a temporary liquid to show off the figure of the wood. I'm pretty sure that putting water on the wood would do pretty much the same thing...it would evaporate eventually.
@squiresuzuki ok got it. thank u :) i tired customizing a guitar. it had a ugly looking paint but the wood was really gud. i applied some clear coat of varnish in it. but i didnt get the expected result. i mean the finish was uneven thats why m so eager to know n learn how to apply that coat. thanks again Squiresuzuki appreciate your help.
@immanrobinson Naptha, denatured alcohol, and I think even mineral spirits are often used before finishing to enhance the grain. They all evaporate very quickly so they're a better alternative to water.
@immanrobinson No problem. Reading my comment now I feel I should elaborate. I think it was like 3am or something when I wrote that. People use those to make the grain show so they can determine how elaborate the figuring is. In this video, he was just using it to show the grain before the wood was finished. A lot of people do it for taking pictures of wood.
@bigeddie38 he said napa (sp?) its a cleaner that doesn't contain water. if i am not mistaken it contains alcohol for cleaning without raising the grain. once it dries it'll look like it did in the beginning. I think the point of wiping it with the cleaner is to show you how it looks when clear coated. ie that wet look

I use white spirit when woodworking to help clean the piece and see what the grain looks like before applying a finish coat
