According to the "against The Law" liner notes, it was Randy Jackson playing bass on this song. Having said that, it was a pretty good cover of a positive song.
fraginat0r: Yeah, but they abandoned their religious aspect and went secular. That's where this album came from. They made a big deal in a music mag that they were drinking and smoking, cuz they were done with Christian music. When they FAILED, they went back to making religious based music. Sure, it's not an act.
@NixEclips oh so they're aren't allowed to go through a "phase" of not wanting to be typecast as merely a "christian band" forever. So they tried to experiment with other lyrics, or whatever, big deal. Just cuz they're Christians doesn't mean every song they ever write or record has to be about god & religion. Besides, unless you know them personally how do you know their "Christianity" was just an act? You're being as big a hypocrite as Jimmy Swaggart was back in the day
@NixEclips has it ever entered you pea sized brain that they never completely stopped making "christian" music?? They just wanted to try other ideas. That the reason they "started again" was... oh why do i bother you're just a hypocrite What you are referring to was just a "phase" they went through. When I was a kid, my uncle used to play the original by Earth, Wind, & Fire. Having said that, Stryper (who I used to love back in the 80's) absolutely ruined this song. UGH! This is as bad as Winger doing "Purple Haze".
That would be Randy Jackson of American Idol on bass (not in the video, but on the song). Check out the Songfacts interview with Michael Sweet for the story.

What do you mean they got their lives back together. Stryper's "christianity" was all an act. They were just the one metal band that couldn't get signed with a standard label like their buddies Motley Crue, so they thought they would try the christian routine. It worked for elvis.
Yah well if the Christianity was an act then why are they still making christian music? why are they always still featured on christian shows, radio. Why do they always talk about christ and God in interviews. And why do they still proclaim Jesus... Dont you think that after they lost popularity and broke up they would have stopped it all together because it wasnt workinG?

We all have to remember that Mike, Robert, Oz, and Tim are human just like us and are sinners, too. They may have strayed away from God during ATL, but that does not mean they still aren't Christians. ATL is not an anti-God album, just not as bold as the previous ones. As Jesus said, He without sin, cast the first stone.
I listen to strictly christian rock music. You can't deny the imagry and the lyrical content of alot of bands like AC/DC, KISS, etc is very evil whether they say it's a joke or not.
I'm not saying they're all bad either. Alot of them do however, sing about pre-marital sex, drugs, etc. Which are all from the devil. That is why I choose to stay away from them totally.
Udoshan, I agree. It's ironic that except for a TINY handful of bands, most of who got criticized as satanic in the 80's was just free-thinking, and a lot of it was moral. I remember Dear Abby's list of "bad" songs included Fantasy by Aldo Nova (hello? it's anti-vice) Suicide Solution by Ozzy (obviously the same, but thru the eyes of an Ozzy battling the bottle) & Hell's Bells by ACDC (Y couldn't Tipper Gore get that this was a SARCASTIC condemnation of dishonesty?) But time changes everything.
I find it ironic that a Christian Metal band covered a song by a group falsel accused of Satanism. (Some crackpots thought that Earth, Wind and Fire are the "Three Elements of Hell". Yeah right!)
Hmm mm I really don't think there is gona be any christian band better than Stryper cuz they got it all solo's unique style vocals all of it...ever notice how no other band well at least no band I know sounds anything like them... Which makes them that much more AWSOME!
Your overreacting say it's better than Earth Wind and Fire, I won't cause friction and will give props to Stryper by doing a metal version of Shining Star and paying respect to the greatest band of all times Earth Wind and Fire, would love to see both groups on stage cranking this out it in Funk and Metal at the same time.
hey, man, they opened the door for literally hundreds of other Christian bands, all of whom owe Mike, Rob, Oz and Tim a HUGE debt of gratitude!!
And try finding an anti-Christian rock voice, today. Most have faded away, and anybody adult in ministry today either knows Strypers stuff intimately, or respects them. :-)
Actually this song was written and recorded by Earth, Wind, and fire (Maurice White). The group was notably a funk band that sang both mainstream and inspirational music (cross over gospel). This song was a number 1 hit on the charts but also had a faith based theme.
Not even close to being true. Listen to the songs, they are comlpetely pointing to God without saying it directly. Even Jesus used allegory to make His point.
The reason Stryper a while back was because they we're getting tired of being ridiculed because of how they looked when they first came out(ie-the yellow and black attack era). Either way though, I still say they rock.
I liked the fact that Stryper came out with Yellow and Black clothes, etc. That made them unique and noticable. They were over the top back in the 80s. I used to be a KISS fan and they were also ridiculed for their look. They became the most recognized band in history of mainstream rock. If Stryper didn't come out with a unique look, they would have never been as big as they are.
This is one of my favorite songs by Stryper! I've had the opportunity to see them a couple of times and they have never let me down! Michael and Robert Sweet are awesome along with Timothy and Oz! Great band!!!!
where did yellow and black go?one of the best remakes I have heard.DID they go against the law on this album, new look, different name ALBUM, nothing god related or god sounding?love stryper either way, they rule, god reigns supreme.
Well, OK, this roller coaster ride thing they did with the video is pretty lame. But I think Stryper's version of this song really kicks ass! And I'm looking at my last two posts and I see that I repeated myself--sorry about that!
Dont you hate it when some stupid producer makes a lame video for you. Stryper had so many good ones and then were forced to do this ridiculous one. And why Enbigma made this the lead single is anyone's guess. ATL had so many good songs (All For One, Two Bodies, ATL, and Lady) from which to choose.
How can you hear this and not get moved by the beat. I hate listening to it at work cause all I want to do is jump on the top of my cubicle and rock out.
I saw Stryper on thier greatest hits tour in 91, they played at a 2000 seater and played theier asses off man, 2 hour show, they even did a Van Halen song "Fire"...truley amazing.
great Hair metal, no matter what your belifes are. great stuff.
What amazes me is that Michael Sweet sometimes has a guitar in his hand and sometimes he doesn't, yet he is still managing to make the guitar sounds. Plus, when he jumps around and sings, its like he is never running out of breath or anything. I mean, this is like a miracle. I don't see how he does it.
sorry for asking...Isn´t the pink car that appears at 0:17 and 0:22 the Pink Panther´s car? The one they were selling on Ebay? If it isn´t it looks very similar...
The stupid. It burns.

This version of "Shining Star" is 10 times better than the Earth, Wind and Fire version. Great job Stryper!
truthprevails777 3 years ago 5
Your overreacting say it's better than Earth Wind and Fire, I won't cause friction and will give props to Stryper by doing a metal version of Shining Star and paying respect to the greatest band of all times Earth Wind and Fire, would love to see both groups on stage cranking this out it in Funk and Metal at the same time.

I miss old-school stryper. They're new stuff isn't bad, just not as great as this!
CaptainOats74 3 years ago 7
What people fail to realize is they are great musicians, people just looked at the clothes and the message and wrote them off.
Shame really.
ironknights466 3 years ago 8
hey, man, they opened the door for literally hundreds of other Christian bands, all of whom owe Mike, Rob, Oz and Tim a HUGE debt of gratitude!!
And try finding an anti-Christian rock voice, today. Most have faded away, and anybody adult in ministry today either knows Strypers stuff intimately, or respects them. :-)
And the Truth Stryper spoke...goes on... :-)

Actually this song was written and recorded by Earth, Wind, and fire (Maurice White). The group was notably a funk band that sang both mainstream and inspirational music (cross over gospel). This song was a number 1 hit on the charts but also had a faith based theme.
sunwukung777 3 years ago
Stryper never sacrificed their faith, you're talking rot.

Worst album ever. Sacrificed their faith to get more people to listen.

Not even close to being true. Listen to the songs, they are comlpetely pointing to God without saying it directly. Even Jesus used allegory to make His point.

whatever man. thats ur opinion and no one elses.

The reason Stryper a while back was because they we're getting tired of being ridiculed because of how they looked when they first came out(ie-the yellow and black attack era). Either way though, I still say they rock.
thefallofmaxpayne 3 years ago 2
I liked the fact that Stryper came out with Yellow and Black clothes, etc. That made them unique and noticable. They were over the top back in the 80s. I used to be a KISS fan and they were also ridiculed for their look. They became the most recognized band in history of mainstream rock. If Stryper didn't come out with a unique look, they would have never been as big as they are.

where did yellow and black go?one of the best remakes I have heard.DID they go against the law on this album, new look, different name ALBUM, nothing god related or god sounding?love stryper either way, they rule, god reigns supreme.

Well, OK, this roller coaster ride thing they did with the video is pretty lame. But I think Stryper's version of this song really kicks ass! And I'm looking at my last two posts and I see that I repeated myself--sorry about that!
tammapo 3 years ago 2
Dont you hate it when some stupid producer makes a lame video for you. Stryper had so many good ones and then were forced to do this ridiculous one. And why Enbigma made this the lead single is anyone's guess. ATL had so many good songs (All For One, Two Bodies, ATL, and Lady) from which to choose.
erteltsa 3 years ago
Ah, dude--I think this was Randy Jackson doing the bass solo at the beginning (Randy from American Idol)...You kick ASS, dawg!!!
tammapo 3 years ago
this song is scary! it's so different. it's a good song but i like the old stryper better than this.

i saw stryper in 1984. yellow and black attack. then about 4 more times into the 90's.
i love the reborn cd and look forward to seeing them again . i am now 40 and grew up with this band.

Yes, Randy Jackson did that killer bass solo at the beginning--all I can say to him is "That kicked ASS, dawg!!"
