This song is just awesome and The Crossing is a fantastic album. It's 10 years on Dec16th since stuart died, but his music will live on for ever. Sadly missed, thanks for all the great memories going back 28 years. Sounds even better than it did then. RIP Stu, never forgotten.
@Sunburst75 a very sombre day indeed yesterday,i saw big country in april of this year with mike peters on vocals,he pays full respect to the big man. Stuart's lyrics still mean as much now as when he wrote them, such a sad loss. r.i.p big man
scottish music is shit! the scottish are crap at everything, even their women come down to england for some real loving! they cant even feed themselves without us english subsidising them! lets face it they get free prescriptions, free university tuition and us english even pay the taxes on their buckfast ffs! hahahaha
Brillant song. Doran44, I was also surprised that Big Country was not HUGE back when. This was my favorite song from a Big Country cassette I bought sometime in the mid-1980s. Still have the cassette and dust it off ocassionally. Big Country is awesome!
Most underrated band of all time, in my opinion. And this song has been blowing my mind since I first bought The Crossing in middle school in the 80's.

First cassette I ever owned was "The Crossing": a friend bought for my birthday, because he knew I liked the song "In A Big Country". I think I wore at least 3-4 cassettes before getting it on CD-many nights I spent listening to this song and the others on the album-to me there wasn't a bad song the album, and decades later I'm still listening to the music and the band-that to me is timelessness.
From 5:13 to 5:30 sounds very similar to RUSH's totem from 1996. Big fan of both bands, with a slight lean to Big Country. I always thought RUSH was underrated and underappreciated. They might be to some degree, but not like BC. I feel for them and Stu. Long live BC.
@wilbert916 I agree with your entire statement. Big Country (like Rush) knows how to absolutely JAM during "musical breaks". You may have already heard it, but just in case...check out the song "The Crossing" which didn't make it to the original album until many, many years later on a re-release. This song is VERY techncial and yet maintains a melody throughout (unlike many prog rock bands). About half way through the song, it goes completely instrumental...and it is awesome!
@padraigmarcus. Yes, very beautiful song. Thanks for the suggestion nonetheless :) Truly amazing music by BC. Absolute pleasure to appreciate time and time again.
This band had such unique individual talent: Brzeziki was a regarded as the finest session drummer around through the early 80's; Stuart's passion charged vocals; ruce Watson's talents on the ebow and Tony Butler's fine bass wich perfectly completed the accord. The intensity which developed from the chemistry was for me a deeply euphoric and spiritual experience. In a strange way, the experience was so intense, I found I could not enjoy the music freely and had to keep the exposure contained.
Can't listen to this masterpiece without thinking of John M.. 1984, up in his room :) still smile when I walk up his Mums road and look up at the window ha ha !!! best days ever !!!!
Try to imagine any of the so-called modern 'rock' bands attempting to write or perform anything like this! BC was a tremendous band, very underappreciated.
I remember my friend telling me about Big Country and his step dad laughed when I asked if it was a "country music" band. No, not country western. Scotts country! Hup! Now my favorite band next to The Doors, and The Lords of The New Church, and The Circle Jerks, Blind Melon, and all Seatle Bands!!!!!!!!
A great effects mix..saw live 7 times, never to be forgotten..real good 4 piece rock band giving everything, vocals stunning and a real connection with fans.Sadly missed....OAKERS..SHREWSBURY.
Excellent band from the eighties. Still got my CD. Wish they still made music like this. Props to Big Country, Simple Minds, BoDeans, Midge Ure, Hooters, and the like.
"The Crossing" was the second cassette(yea, that's my age) I ever received (I don't remember the first at the moment :D)...I wore out 4 copies of this album. I too listened to this song an night on my tape player. Amazing band, too bad they never really made it huge in North America other than "Big Country".
@Tinalera Yeah, i can remember having to open up cassettes and fixing the tape with sticky tape...great when it worked but devastating if it didn't and i had to sit in front of my tape player picking it out of the wheels and such. Great track from a great album \m/
i listened to this tonight with my friend, and she was reallie astounded. i have to say, me too! i did not know this band before the introduction here...and i was alive in the 80's! ...not listening to wondrous music apparently.

I agree with you 100% levy98.I have never understood the unfairness of what happened to Big Country in relation to their talent and body of original work and the recognition they received. And the tragedy of Stuart just compunds that.
Theres three bands that never got the credit they derserved Thin Lizzy, Kings x, and Big Country. Big Country was truly underated, they had 100 times more talent then U2 could ever dream of but somehow they just werent as popular, but real Big Country knows genious when we hear them
i'm a rocker from way back but never paid much attention to 'Big Country' till i heard this by accident at a party a few years ago .. now, i'm a 'late developer' devotee .. Great band!
@badbrains1969 i always feel sorry for bruce.......no one ever seems to mention his part..he is probable the most underrated guitarist ever..stuart is a legend though! :O)
First time I saw Stuart Adamson was in the video for "Into the valley" by punk band the Skids and he was awesome then. BC are one of the greatest bands of all time
BC have got to be contenders for the best band ever. Like kumug78 says, they're underrated and getting a placing of #87 or something on the Billboard US didn't help... Damn you America, he might still be alive if it wasn't for that.

some of Stuarts songs can make you sad, and some joyful....his country is both tragic and glorious....ha-ha if you want real sadness just support Scotland in World Cup
I remember when I loved this album. I recorded to a 60 min tape, and this song got cut off at the end cause it just keeps going on, and on, and on. A really great song otherwise.
Stuart Adamson - RIP......one of the saddest days was when I heard he was no longer with us......these boys were the drain of most of my pocket money in the mid-80`s..........

some of Stuarts songs can make you sad, and some joyful....his country is both tragic and glorious....ha-ha if you want real sadness just support Scotland in World Cup

I remember when I loved this album. I recorded to a 60 min tape, and this song got cut off at the end cause it just keeps going on, and on, and on. A really great song otherwise.

Hee hee, I remember doing the same with a tape way back then too. Thank God when CD's came along

Stuart Adamson - RIP......one of the saddest days was when I heard he was no longer with us......these boys were the drain of most of my pocket money in the mid-80`s..........

Check out from around 2:20 to around 3:20. Pretty cool.
Q: How do you know if a song is by Big Country?
A: If the singer sings "CHAUK!!" (see 4:57)
potential problem: it could be After the Fire, not BC.
