@tomboy786 You can't solve the equation 2(x-y)=4. You need another equation saying what Y or X equals. For example, you could solve the equation:

2(x-y)=4 when y=10x or y-x=14.

@DJGirlMN I'm not sure where you're getting "negative" here. In your example, 4x + 9y = -1, if you want to find the slope you would rewrite it so y was alone... so it'd go like this:

9y = -4x - 1

and then divide everything by 9 (the number in front of y)

9y/9 = -4x/9 - 1/9

y = (-4/9)x - 1/9

and the number in front of x, the -4/9, is your slope...
