  • On April 1, 1984 I went shopping in Manhattan for some music. I was always a Marvin fan but hadn't listened in awhile. On that day I was really in the mood to hear Marvin so I bought his Motown Anthology. That night I was listening in my living room with ear phones on while my friend watched the news. I turned to see a picture of Marvin on the news. I took off my ear phones and found out he had been killed. What an incredible soul we lost on that day.

  • it was the flirtations cover version that made me find marvins great original

  • I first heard this at Blackpool Mecca. Classic forever.

  • Man, I had no idea this was Marvin! Until now I've only heard the Doobie Brothers' version. I'm glad I found this!

  • i remember working in a restaurant in miami many yrs ago when I heard that marvin gaye had been killed by his father. we played casstte tapes in his honor all day and nght. I still think of him and Tammi, watch the vidio's and smile. They made great music.

  • Released by Motown on July 26, 1966, it peaked at Number 47 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September of that year-

  • when in doubt get the motown out

  • A brilliant version by the man himself, brings back lots of good memories of great mates and the clubs in Manchester, Oldham and Ashton.

    K.T.F.

  • An absolutely sensational version, best i've heard by a country mile. But then again, the singer is Marvin Gaye after all, so no surprise. And i thought the Doobie Brothers did a good job with it, this has taken the song to a new level. 10 stars xxxxxxxxxx

  • theres no substitute for motown, all classics, thanks for good old days

  • All I can say is......SING MARVIN SING!!!

  • before the acid rap hiphop trance etc bullshit that came out in 1990 and is still here today , the manchester clubs used to play the old soul and motown, people whatever there age young and old always got up and danced to these classics. i remember trying to buy this off the dj for a tenner.great days.

  • Hi John...in other words MotownMagic1959....Thanks for putting this on....My name's Steve....Live in Watford....Have been to Brighton a few times....Not a bad place :-).....Have loved Motown most of my life....Would be nice to hear from you....Steve.

.....Have loved Motown....and of course other stuff, most of my life

  • Not heard all of Marvin's stuff....Ecology stuff made us think....but really prefer 60's....and of course " Let's Get it On".....The ultimate in smoochiness....and the rest :-)

  • Marvin Gaye, did he ever make a crap record, ...... I dont think so :)

  • wheres doobie darlin?

  • The Doobie Brothers re-made this song back in 1978

  • actually The Doobie Brothers did that song in 1977 and I have the album with that cover of "Little Darlin' (I Need You).. The album is "Living On The Fault line" also the song appears on "The Best Of The Doobies vol. 2"

  • And i feel what is said in the comments.. I love his later stuff.. Namely whats going on..

But the tamla motown era.. it simply blows me away.. it doesnt get old.

  • At one point i was such a marvin gaye nut, i had to go cold turkey for a season it was getting to be obsessuve..

You cant go better than this music. Theres few artists that fuse such soul and emotion in their voice that when you listen to their music that it send shiver down your back...

    Soul food.
