I've been to my main library in the Weston-super-Mare...I've studied well there. It's quiet. Apart from an elderly man who wanted to comment on how heavy my subject was. He won't be one of those people to say "it's getting easier". Much quieter than anywhere in the college, well, apart from that Library.
I share Brian's sentiments. I don't mind a clatter of keyboards in the technology area, but a Library should remain a peaceful place for reading, study and learning. If you're going to have lectures, or have noisey groups - you use a study room and close the door. As for mobile phones - a neccessary evil in the modern world (with added emphasis on EVIL!)
When I emigrated from England four years ago our local library had already become more like a community centre - people talking on mobile phones and the staff saying nothing. The reason for that is they mustn't offend any users - in the light of government cuts libraries are being closed, so the staff have to show that lots of people are using the library. If they asked someone not to use their phone, they might not come back. I didn't like it but it's a sign of the times.
I think Brian sums up how a lot of people feal in librarys. LIbrarys are meant to be quiet places so you can study. People are always talking on their mobile phones. Trains annoy me as well.
@coventrydavid A good point on the Library...I don't see your point on trains. Unless you paid for a quiet compartment and it was noisy, then there's a point.
If I had been in the library that day, I would have applauded Brian.
