Really it's a car15 (colt automatic rifle ar15) it's also in some ways still an m16 just shrunken to an m4 length. So they say it's an m16. In Vietnam the us military wanted a more reliable system because of jams the m16a1 were having but unfortunately they aborted the project and the m16a1 still became the issued weapon until the m16a2 came out. Most sergeants or squad leaders used the car15 while the everybody else use the m16a1. It's still an m16 but the proper name for it is the car15 or xm

So they are SHORTER VERSIONS OF THE M16 A1.

It's called an m16 because before modification, it has a m16a2 body (fixed handle but circular handguard cap)

no the m 16 is the origanal but then a new version whith diffrent internals was made but failed that was the car 15 then they modified it making a ar 15 witch aslo failed, as for the m4 it also has difrent internals and is a lot difrent than a short version of the m16 if it was they would just call it the m16a5 however they are all in the m16 family

it's AR-15. it says it on the gun in the very beginning and M4 has a different barrel plus detachable carrying handle. the other guy had a detachable carrying handle only because he upgraded it. it still says AR-15 on that gun as well

AR-15 is the name of the entire family of weapons, including M16 and M4, though they are usually called by their military M-names.

Most civilian AR-15's are indeed semi-auto only though. But you can get them as select fire too, with the right kind of license.
