  • Very interesting, thank you for uploading these videos, BBC.

  • 23:10 Attenborough: ...these wings are stunted and tattered. Cormorant: Fuck off primate. At least I had wings once.

  • Thank you for making this stunning series available for free. You guys rock! :)

  • I can't believe this series is available for free on youtube!!!! I remember seeing it on dvd for around £60 a few years ago!

  • fuck this extra credit.

  • @wafflez479 You are a fool.

  • correct use multiple tests using a hypothesis and even multiple hypothesis to formulate a theory or a law

  • @Narthma correct you use multiple threads of hypothesises to formulate a theory or law

or you stumble upon it accidentally which is some luck lol : )

  • The credits music has always been one of my favorites of all time. Does anyone know where I can find this, or what it's called?

  • wow!!! this guy has a time machine!?

  • i ♥ BBC

    BBC forever

  • THEY'RE MAGNIFICINT! It is extrodinary to see the birds in film. They have such beautiful fluffy plumage and such powerful graceful flight. It almost makes me jelous. Even the flightless birds are amazing. It is indead fascinating that ostriches have adaptations similar to a horse. The flightless cormorant is a graceful swimmer. The kagu is so handsom and beautiful. The kiwi and kakapo are nice plump fluffy birds.

  • its not a theory, its a fact, only christfags call it a theory to discredit it

  • @NeoSilvanus Acutally the word theory use in scientific biologist terms is use to tell why or how something works or a pattern is occuring. So you must be using a sterotypic sense of the word theory because it does not mean imagnary circumstances. So no discredit is being giving. Maybe try looking up the context from a biologist side because they are the ones who made this video and really figure out what they mean. : ) well now that it is cleared up have a great day!

  • This show is great, and evolution is true. Everyone be quiet and enjoy David Attenborough.

  • LOL, i like how the bird at the end (kakapo?) just keeps getting bigger and Bigger and BIGGER xDD

  • If you have a problem with the theory of evolution, make your own show about wildlife explaining why creatures were created the way they are.

  • lol @ youtube users

"I don't believe in evolution! so i'm gonna cry about it using my keyboard!"

"Well, I DO believe in evolution, so I'm gonna cry HARDER!"

    "No, I am!"

    "No, *I* am!"

"Your science can't make you cry as much as my Jesus can make ME cry!"

    "WAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!"

I shouldn't be surprised an evolution "debate" is in the comments of a video that actually touches on the subject. Usually it's on videos of cats or fat people falling down or something else completely unrelated.

  • David Attenborough is my HERO. Thank you BBC for posting these! Yay!

  • I like to read through the coments while I watch shows like this. The coments on this show are hilarious. people talking about how evoulution is a religion, or that there is no proof for it. Many of these people only show their own ignorance, and I find it extremely funny. Just for the record, evolution isnt a religous idea, and there is alot of proof for it.

Anyway, I love this series, and for people who are obsessed with the "evils" of evolution the other shows dont talk about it.

  • Thank you for pointing out the ridiculousness of these silly debates.

  • It's funny because some people are dumb for not knowing the truth of scientific evidence.

  • @Tim3shark Unfortunately neither side will accept the comprimised position that I personally take - that there is a god, who created the conditions for life, and then let the lottery of natural selection taked over. Seems to me like the safest hypothesis.

  • That's a bit misleading as to its definition in science. The theory of evolution, as it stands today, is supported by numerous lines of evidence --not just "more".

  • spam!

  • That guy ROCKS! I NEED HIS AUTOGRAPH! HE IS SO LUCKY HE GETS TO FEED THE BIRDS. THATS LIKE HALF OF MY DREAM COME TRUE! I WANT TO BE SOME TYPE OF BIOLOGIST WHEN I GROW UP. THIS VID IS "D" BEST!

  • all of these birds remind me of my failed experiments on spore. lmao

  • at 5:53 the bird says "OOh Somthing shiny!!"

  • I love those Hoatzins!

  • I am not sure that you watched the whole episode, nor even the whole show, as it is only the first half of this that goes deeply into the topic of fossils and the evolution of birds. I would suggest you check out some of the other episodes in this series.

  • mrbobbyh: Sure. Stick your head in the sand by ignoring evolution.

Two questions for you. How did H1N1 swine flu evolve in your lifetime? How do you feel about selective breeding of dogs to develop desirable qualities?

Keep ignoring fact and reality. Your loss.

  • I am not a believer in the evolution Theory, but I still found this and the rest of the series very interesting.

If you wish to argue evolution versus intellegent design, might I recommend Ben Stein's documetary, 'Expelled.'

  • Nothing in biology makes sense without evolution. Every creature should be looked at in terms of how it evolved.

  • 33:20-33:42 was simply hilarious!!!! The kiwi was not paying him any mind :)

  • Commercials everywhere....you tube has whored itself out also.

  • The bird who has the brains to ask himself this question will soon be eaten by a puma.

  • hello

  • thank you!

  • Such a gorgeous series. One of the best in natural history filmmaking.

  • Why do these shows ALWAYS have to spout their religious views?! Why can't they simply discuss the animal. The animal is not evolved - that is a THEORY - unproven I might add. No transitional forms - not 1.

These RELIGIOUS FANATICS need to stop forcing their religion down everyone's throat. I agree with togglenuts:

"I have an idea! Let us talk about birds, not religious dogma."

I say AMEN to that, togglenuts!

  • Amen.

  • Science is not a religion. Attenborough is discussing science, which is based on vast amounts of observable, testable, and corroborated evidence. The word "theory" in science is not the same as in lay terms. "Theory" is actually stronger than fact, because it is an accumulation of numerous facts that suggest the same information.

Again, Attenborough is NOT discussing religion; he is talking about science.

  • Would you say the same for Germ Theory despite the fact that many other superstitions and religions say diseases are caused by evil spirits or curses, or would you say it's science because you acknowledge the vast amount of evidence and because it doesn't conflict with your own world view?

  • "Science is always measurable and Evolution, fantasy though it is, is just that"

You don't know what you're talking about. Evolution is the center of biology --and biology is measurable. Your opinion is based on pure ignorance. Evolution research papers are littered with algebra and calculus and mathematical descriptions. But I doubt you've ever read one.

  • No, FuzzyDuck is absolutely correct. 'Unproven theory' is a meaningless term. A theory is an explanation of facts, therefore a theory is supported by facts. The more supported by facts it is, the more confident we are in it, but a theory is never 'proven'. To say as much would be to say that the subject is no longer worth analyzing, which is never true so long as no theory is better supported by the facts.

On another, less important semantic note, did you intend your username to be Walksbyf8th?

  • I disagree. Theory is a proposition, not necessarily consisting of facts. It is a hypothesis, which is validated upon its being proved correct. Until then, it remains an unproven theory.

  • Sorry, but that is not how scientists see it. A hypothesis is an idea about how the world works. A theory is a hypothesis that is supported by evidence. The general public uses these terms interchangeably, but scientists don't.

  • A hypothesis is what comes before a theory in the general scientific method. A theory is a grand explanation for observable facts and phenomenon. And as you said, it is "supported by evidence".

  • Theories are indeed hypotheses, which are used to explain phenomena, but proof for marcoevolution still eludes science. There is plenty of evidence for evolution, but most examples of evolution are nigh impossible to observe in a human lifetime, or even thousands of lifetimes.

To call evolutionary theory an "unproven theory" is misleading. It is a theory which cannot be incontrovertibly proven, at this time. It's the current explanation, which still has gaps, and needs more research.

  • "Theories are indeed hypotheses,"

No. A hypothesis is what comes before a theory. And evidence for macro-evolution was established in the 19th century, long before the evidence for micro-evolution. The geological evidence clearly showed dramatic biological (macro) change had occurred.

  • "refers to any systematic knowledge-base or prescriptive practice which is capable of resulting in a prediction or predictable type of outcome."

Predicting one will find the same complex genetic marker in two distinct species is a prediction. And geneticists have done this numerous times. Their results have often pointed to common descent. Or is DNA testing not a science? Predicting where and what type of fossil one will find is a prediction, too. A testable one.

  • gravitational THEORY, thermodynamic THEORY, and evolutionary THEORY have been proven true time and time again..

evolution of venom system in lizards and snakes led the discovery of new chemicals useful in a variety of treatments ... the hypothesis that primates share common ancestry generated increasingly effective drugs..

whether you like it or not evolution has played a huge role in your lifestyle

  • @walksbyf8h Gravity is also an unprovable theory, so that does not qualify as science either.

  • @Raneman25 Step off the Empire State Building and see theory proven. You do WALK don't you? And your feet connect to the ground, 1 after the other? I mean your right leg doesn't just fly over your head, right? Or are you bouncing along on your head? LOL Don't answer that. The actual theory of evolution, which I see is a mystery to you is diametrically opposed to the theory of thermal dynamics. Tell your parents to sue; they will win. Just show the jury your comment. We're done, shortie.

  • @walksbyf8h Actually, it's not gravity, it's Intelligent Falling.

  • I have an idea! Let us talk about birds, not religious dogma.

  • Fuck I can't watch this cuz it doesn't load, it streams

  • The cost of the knowledge of our origin is and must be our belief that God is responsible for the beauty and complexity of nature. I believe more people would arrive at this conclusion if they ACTUALLY read their bibles while paying the slightest attention to science.

  • They would come to the "conclusion" that the earth is at the center of the universe, flat, the moon produces light, dark skinned people do not have souls, slavery is OK, and wearing a silk tie with a cotton shirt is a sin, oh year, a sin to eat lobsters too.

  • Where did you get those "conclusions"? The only one I can think of support for is the lobster thing.

  • LOL. I thought the Father created the universe because the old testament mentioned nothing of Jesus. And the Trinity mumbo jumbo is dumb along with the rest of the bible fairy tale.

  • psst....Friend - you don't read your Bible very well - Jesus is absolutely in the Old Testament. Walking and Talking - and people talking right back to Him. You bet He is.

  • Then he also created Filarial Worms...I guess he thinks its fun to watch a parasite burrow into the leg of an impoverished child and make it swell up like a log, causing pain, deformation, and eventually death. Because, you know, 5 year old kids who are starving to death need to have to worry about that sort of thing too.

On the other hand, BIRD'S ROCK!

  • So you believe the nature of birds is "God is the one who created Nature"?Try and be more specific. This show has 10 episodes, each over 45 minutes

  • i believe You Tube has now redeemed itself :)

  • i love watching these nature documentaries stoned..... hahahahaha! and the quality looks decent enough... not awesome... but not bad...

  • i wish i could do what Attenborough does... travel all over the world and look at animals and learn many things its crazy...

  • I'm glad he's so dedicated to presenting the world to those of us who wish we could do what he does. His documentaries are wonderful because they present information in an entertaining, visually pleasing, flowing and thoughtful way, without detracting from the world they are trying to illuminate.

  • Did you know his brother is the man who played the professor in Jurassic Park?

  • His brother's also a famous movie director.

  • This show gives many good examples of evolution at its best. Nice vid.

  • lol ya well this video shows there is such thing. Why dont you go beat on your bible and stick with your outdated mythology.

  • lol you trust a 2000 year old book to tell you about earth's ancient history?

  • Yeah. Well...the Bible is not supposed to teach science. It's supposed teach about behavior, how you should act, the codes for morality, all that. People who can't accept multiple truths shouldn't count as Christians. They don't believe, they're just in denial about everything else. Stubborn ignorance isn't the same as faith. And they're usually so busy trying to stay ignorant that they fail at the morality part too.

And its too bad, because such people can't appreciate a lovely show like this.

  • The quality sucks though

  • Am I the only one getting an error after it plays the commercial? All the other shows seem to work...but I want to watch this one...

  • Nature shows ROCK

  • wen did utube get this show section its great!

  • They're trying to compete with Hulu

  • They shouldn't.

  • I think they should. Besides, Hulu needs some competition. This is great! I wish I had known about this before I went and bought the series DVDs. Oh well.

  • David Attenborough is an amazing narrator, much like in Planet Earth. Great footage.

  • I must say, with no disrespect at all to Ms. Sigourney Weaver, Sir Attenborough is the best narrator of that series.

  • This is really cool considering with "GetTube" you can download all these full length shows to your computer.

  • This was so great! I really hope YouTube uploads more shows like this. I plan to watch the whole series. I love David Attenborough.

  • Sir David Attenborough is the MAN!

  • This makes me so happy. I LOVE this series.

  • Great new feature for YouTube!!!

  • Interesting!

  • Great video.

  • cool

  • I think we can make exceptions with non-profit organizations like BBC. I think it's more informative and educational than majority of the garbage out there on youtube.

  • The BBC isn't non-profit at all.

However, I do agree with the educational value.

  • itsdontay, YouTube is getting better by broadcasting shows and movies. I do not see anything wrong.

  • STFU douchebag
