It is not surprising that so many charities seem to appear as scams. Twenty or more years ago reports came out on United Way showing less than 24 cents per dollar went to the charities they represent and then each of those charities takes their cut, meaning almost none of the donated money actually goes to doing anyone any good. (except the people running the charity) I do donate, time and money, but I do it directly, not through some organization.

There is a whole lot of this going on today unfortunately. The same thing with the Haiti earthquake. Good people are being taken advantaged of because they want to help others. There are websites out there that rate most charities. Charity Navigator is a good place to start.

of course the money given to charities almost always ends up in the opportunistic hands of those running the charity...it rarely goes to contribute to the growth of the project intended.
