Sorry, but I find it hard to believe that it is really l. Kogan. I appreciate it's a youtube, still the sound is rather thin and one dimensional. Besides, what's the Orchestra? What year is that? What label? Where is ANY information about this recording? Most concertmasters can do a better job than this.
@symfotroll Historic Russian Archives - LEONID KOGAN Edition - 1980 recording with USSR State Symphony Orchestra/Pavel Kogan. You can find all details here:
@epessina Just heard this very recording on the radio. L. Kogan of 1980 was only a shadow of his younger self. I remember as a kid watching him one day in 1980/1/2? on TV playing Mendelssohn's double concerto with his daughter at the piano and while Pavel conducting. Leonid sounded dreadful. His tone was course and full of metal, on and off (mostly off, actually) vibrato, no phrasing to speak of and generally quite out of tune. So yes, it's L. Kogan.
I find this an absolutely gorgeous sound. Accoustics vary enormously as is well known. Some are just unlucky that they have played in a "poor" venue and have been recorded, We should always remember that, when commenting on the sound quality of an artist. Here, I think Kogan sounds ravishing. His playing is sublime. However, it is always a matter of personal taste. Many thanks for posting. Best Wishes.
no violinist is all things to all people. I agree with you in this one instance. Kogan is my all time favorite violinist, but I don't like this performance. It may be partially attributable to the tinny sounding recording.
I agree that it's not my favorite of Kogan's works but you're right, it might be the recording itself. However, it does sound very Kogan style like he's playing a Paganini work. Though an interesting take and well done without a doubt just not my favorite rendition of this piece. Still good to hear though! :D
Nathan Milstein for this one..... Or even Yo Yo on his cello

Ugh, the key distortion makes me cringe. I love Kogan, but the transfer of this recording... :(

I usually like Kogan, but I don't like this. It sounds a bit thin to me.

A incredibly gentle, innocent and feminine interpretation from one of the most masculine player ever.

A honeyed, soulful expression, beautifully played.
