  • Gorgeous! I am listening to this as the Chilean miners are being rescued.

I rarely post covers - I think this is the second one I've ever shared, I just happened upon this. I love the whistling at the end.

From a fellow guitarist/singer and songwriter. Bravo!

  • Gorgeous! I am listening to this as the Chilean miners are being rescued.

  • Very nice Alonzo.....I remember Jorma Kaukonen explaining that his instumental Embryonic Journey was inspired by this song....This is the 1st time that I've heard it

  • Great version my friend. Love it, you really do it justice. I saw a video of it done by Mike Peters of the Alarm. Yours as good!!

  • merry christmas = Feliz Natal

happy new year = feliz ano novo...

  • Alonzo, great job. I love your huge sigh of relief at the end and then the little satisfying smile that flashes up.

  • Thank you. Yeah, that was a "Whew! Made it through!" kind o' sigh. Song takes a lot of energy. The flash of smile was a complete accident of sloppy video editing, but i like it too.

  • NÃO TEM PRA NINGUÉM!!!

    congratulations...wonderful work my friend!!

  • Muito obrigado!

  • Wow. I never cared much for this song, having only heard audio recordings of Pete Seeger, Byrds, John Denver ... After seeing this video I have a whole new appreciation for this song. Great job.

  • Excellent version of a classic coal mining song! Thanks for posting!

  • Great interpretation...

não me canso de assistir esse video...

    great song!!!

    Congratulations man!!!

  • I thought it was a really good rendition of a haughnting and classic song. Great guitar playing.

Congrats! Love to know the chords.

  • ... great guitar though! :~)

  • Ah. Maybe I just should have not sung then? Being an ignorant American?

  • Sorry, didn't mean to be rude! I shoulda thought a bit more carefully about how I expressed myself.

Actually I'm really glad that Seeger and others have done so much to keep our old traditions alive (yours and mine, I mean).

I'm just a bit frustrated that I can't seem to find many Welsh folk singers online!

    Peace out...

  • Well, thank you hugely for being gracious, and pardon my touchiness. There's so much skanking that goes on sometimes here on YouTube, I'm maybe a bit too sensitive. Anyway, peace back.

  • This is a Welsh poem, about the 1926 General Strike, so I suppose it's no wonder that a bunch of Americans in the 1960's didn't really know what they were singing about!

  • great version but its prounounced rumney....dont blame you i blame the byrds

  • no, blame pete seeger

  • How about we blame nobody? I thank Pete for writing such a lovely song, and the Byrds were just ducky by me.

  • Amigo...não me canso de ver esse vídeo...

    voce tocou muito bem...

  • Obrigado...

  • nota 10...

    esse som é maravilhoso!

  • Obrigado!

  • man, you've got some excellent tunes out there; i will check them out when I get some time. As for this one, Well Done!

  • There is an "X-Factor" and you've either got it or you don't. It cannot be learned. You, don Alonzo, have it. Bless you for posting this.

  • I will assume -- not presume, I hope-- this X is something good to have, and thank you.

  • This "X" is, indeed, something wonderful to have.

  • I can't remember if I've commented here before, but this is wonderful.

  • ¡Excelente!

  • Muchisimas gracias.

  • Hi: I only found your video when I looked up the title after hearing the Pete Seeger version for the first time in my life last night on the radio. You are a genius!!! Are you just in "drop-D" tuning, or is it something more complex? Keep on keeping on, man !!!!!!

  • Thank you, though I think "genius" should be reserved for those rare artists who redirect the future of their art---like Pete Seeger, for example. Yep, that's indeed drop-D.

  • Nice song but Rhymney is pronounced as "rum nee"

  • Yep, got that. See the discussion of Welsh pronunciations at the start of these text comments.

  • Sorry for that just looked at them, you see as I only live about a mile from Rhymney and as above I heard this song on the radio for the first time that night did a search for it found this one 1st. Pete Seeger dosn`t pronounce it right either lol. I will have to learn to play this as I tinckle a little with the guitar.

  • Please don't feel sorry about pointing out my mispronunciation. My response to you reads a bit too brusque, I think, so allow me to apologize if it seemed that way to you!

And yes, Pete's mangled pronunciations in just about every foreign language he's attempted, but it hardly matters because of the tremendous gift he's given his country and the world.

  • Soulful, driving, interesting. Really great playing and singing. I've been trying to learn this song recently and its one of those that seem simple but aren't easy to do well.

  • Brilliant!

  • Stirring performance, Alonzo.

I once made a "pilgrimage" to Rhymney several years ago. The nearby town of Merthyr has a wonderful narrow-gauge railroad lovingly restored by a group of railroad buffs. It's just a few miles long, but takes you through the countryside you sang about.

Cheers and Merry Christmas, Jim Lynch

  • Man, you kill it everytime brother, can you give me the base chords to this song, as I'm feeling too lazy to figure it out myself.

  • This is one of my favourite songs.

It is very moving, and a brilliant rendition! I loved it!

  • Goof version !! :o)

    Thanks for sharing it !!!

  • That makes me feel so goof to hear. Thanks.

  • Brilliant.

  • Apart from the pronunciation of some of the towns (I live in rhymney) it was a rather epic try man !

  • "Try"? Um, I hope at least "epic" is a positive.

  • APPROVED BY THE ANGEL OF MUSIC

  • I accidentally clicked the thumbs down icon by your comment. I too think this is great.

  • Wow, Wow, Wow! One of my favorite versions of one of my favorite songs. Perfect!

  • This was the greatest song Ive heard in months! Very nice, thank you for your post.

  • Hey, thanks for doin' it right! Love it! wish I'd been brave enough cause I could it with you real well!!!

  • Fancy that - someone actually interpreting a song (and movingly, I might add)! Very refreshing. even more so are the addition of the verses few know exist. Thank you for the rendition and posting.

    Cheers,

    Iain McLennon

  • have watched your supurb video 10 times and i am very impressed i have been trying to find the chords for this piece for at least 5 years.

i have been tryin to work the denver version for at least 7.

i wonder if you could tell me where to but the music as i have tried ludlow music and songsway who own the copyright with no joy whatsoever.

Any help you could give me would be warmly welcomed.

    yours

    peter

  • I don't know if this will help, or not. Judy Collins had a drop dead rendition on her #3 album and I believe this is in her Judy Collins songbook. Hopefully, this will give you some assistance. This guy does a great job on it. When I heard this on her album and it floored me. Take care.

  • That was absolutely phenomenal. Just watching people play this song makes me want a 12-string more and more, just so I can play this. I know the song on my six, but it's pretty futile to even try it. Whenever I do try it, though, I'm going to get the Welsh right, just to actually be different. :D

But anyway, beautiful job. You're amazing.

  • A great performance. As a non-Welsh member of a Welsh choir I know how difficult that Welsh pronunciation can be. But if Pete Seeger didn't care why should we?

  • Mr garbanzo

What a tremendous rendition, the second part with the fast picking is especially good. As an expatriot Welshman from the Rhondda Valley, South wales this music touches my heart. Much better than Pete Seeger's version, epic, well done thank you. keep it up. Best regards. Ian

  • Really good rendition of Pete Seeger's performance. Excellent guitar and voice. Pronunciation of some of those Welsh town names pretty awful though - as Pete did however.

  • Ha! Yeah, I'll bet it's awful, as: 1. I don't know anyone Welsh to check with, 2. I don't know Welsh from Martian myself; and 3. Pete mangled every foreign language he attempted, and he's my only model.

Eppilot, if I can get some help with getting it right, I'd appreciate it! Thanks for the comment.

  • LOL! Fair comment. I'll try not to bore you too much but a few quick pronunciations are :- Rhymney is Rum-nee

Merthyr: Rhyme "Mer" with "Her" and away you go Rhondda: dd is pronounced th (as in "the" or "seethe")

    Swansea is Swan-zee.

    The rest is perfect.

Check out John Denver's version on You Tube, he actually gets quite close.

At the end of the day though, you'd make it sound good even if you did sing it in Martian. Just keep playing.

  • Great guitarist! and such a terrific song.
