@bearwithgun14 Good to know. You can get the HMC150 at my Get Gear link. It goes to my trusted vendor. You get a good price with great service, I get a few bucks thrown my way. Good luck.
@mirakoff That's a tough question. There are so many choices. If you're going to just lock down the tripod for a "talking head" interview, almost any tripod will do. If you need to get fluid follow-the-action, then a fluid head style. I use a Manfrotto 501. My tripod doesn't have locking legs, so I can move the feet close and stand in a small space. Some tripod legs are interlocked, and expand and contract together. Perhaps ask your question at dvxuser(dot)com in their HMC150 blog area.

@shitsandgigglesforu Your best bet is to transcode it into DVCHD Pro, or another format first. There are many converters out there to shop for. @MichaelMcMahon95 The XH A1 is a great camera. Its HDV format is easy to edit. The camera has a great zoom lens. I loved that camera. @tozziwow I'm not sure if there is any difference in the two models. I had the HMC40 for review purposes only and had to send it back. You could ask your question at the DVXUSER website. You'll find lots of discussion about Panasonic cameras there. Good luck.

@EricPiencka No quality difference that I know of. The SDHC Class 10 cards reformat in the camera within 2 seconds compared to around 10 seconds for reformatting the Class 6 cards. So that is faster. But image quality is the same.
@dteubner@ericPiencka Actually, there is a difference. The higher the class, the faster the card can read a right information. So if you are looking to have high quality video, than go with the class 10, if you just need it for home videos (or things where quality doesnt matter) get the class 6. This is the way I see it, class 6 is ideal for DSLR picture shooting. Any video, including DSLR, I use class 10.
I am a high schooler with no money, so I have only one opportunity to buy a professional camera for a couple of years, so I have to make sure what ever camera I get is the right one and will last me. I want a camera in the 3000-4000.00 range, can anybody tell me if this a good one for me? I do studio type videos with green screens and do effects, so that's what I want to get. Please help, thanks.
@GoffFilms The HMC150 is the best camera I've owned to date. If you have a robust PC and can edit AVCHD video, then you'd be doing okay with this camera. Of course, they keep introducing new cameras every year, but I think the HMC150 is a good value. Alternatively, the Sony HDR-AX2000 with a 20x zoom might do well too. The question is can you edit AVCHD video easily. Either camera will do the trick. Good luck deciding.
I just recently bought a HMC150 and have two wireless mics to go with it. The only thing is when I put the mics into the seperate inputs and load it into CS4 there is only one audio track instead of two. Do you know what would be causeing this?
@Samps1188 Yes. The audio track in Premiere Pro is in stereo, meaning it is your left AND right audio track from the HMC150. If you want to bring those two channels of audio in as two mono tracks, do the following: Import your video into Premiere Pro. BEFORE dragging the clip into a timeline (sequence) right-click the video in Premiere and choose Modify >>Audio Channels. Choose the Mono. Now when you drag the clip into a timeline (sequence) your audio will drop into two mono tracks instead.
@LethargicBannanazZ The hvx200a is a larger camera in bulk, records to tape AND P2. I believe the image quality is similar to the HMC150. However the hvx200a uses P2 cards which are expensive. That said, Pansonic will soon be launching the AG-AC130 which sports a 21x zoom lens. Costs more, but if you need a real zoom, it might be a good choice. But I love my HMC150 and been using it for 2 years. Best camera I've owned to date.
let me ask you something. what would be better. getting the 700k and buying accessories to get things right or buying this (how much money for accessories would that cost to get it right)
@TheShootTruth10 With the HMC150 you'll need the bigger battery and a shotgun mic to add. You can visit HowNowVideo(dot)com and click on the HMC150 at the bottom of the page (little ad) and check the accessories for this camera.
Im running off a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 Processor and 4gb or Ram using FCP 7. Would it be wise for me to purchase this camera or would I spend more time getting pissed at how slow the computer is running then I would editing?

@tbabbitt44 Macs first transcode the AVCHD into ProRes. So you'll need to wait for that process to finish while importing. But once in ProRes, I understand that editing will be smooth and easy. I don't own a Mac so I can't test it. You could ask your questions at DVXUSER. It's a free forum of Panasonic enthusiasts. You'll need to create a free account to post a question, but Mac users are surely there. Good luck.

@tbabbitt44 sorry for my late comment that should be fine espically if you upgrade your ram to 8 gb but that can be pricey :) so purchase the camera and if you find it too slow or whatever upgrade the RAM to 8 gbs its very easy to do

@hobocamptheater I believe Macs first transcode the AVCHD into native ProRes format. Not 100% sure, but you could ask your question at DVXUSER forum. Lots of HMC150 users there that might be able to answer your question.
@hobocamptheater If you are using final cut it will automatically scratch the files and turn them into MOV format. If you are using Premiere you can just drag and drop the MTS files from sdcard. Playback in will depend on your ram memory size. I edit AVCHD on an Imac in both progrms with only 2gigs of ram its not as fast as I would like but usable I will be upgrading my ram.
@BiohazardProductG3 It's an option in CS5. It accelerates some filters and render times in Premiere Pro. If you have an nvidia card that is supported, you'll get intense speed increases in CS5 and the nvidia card. see my YouTube video: LKgEmNtTmgo (put that in YouTube's search field).
@dundeeslapped Not sure what is best. I've used the PQI brand and RiDATA brand. Search newEgg. That's where I buy my memory. I paid around $30 for a 16GB Class 6 SDHC card.
I did a small two camera shoot with my HMC40 and my 2nd camera on the HMC150. I can't tell if my camera 2 man [for whatever reason] may have had +6 gain on, but have you compared the noise levels between teh 40 and the 150? Basically, I thought the HMC150 would have had a more clean image compared to my 40...
@StuartHaight The HMC150 has a better image I feel. If he shot the video too hot (with +6 gain) then the two cameras may not match. The HMC150 has larger chips than the HMC40, so it should be better in low light.
Hey David, I have a question about the sd cards that this camera uses. What would happen if I use a card that uses a lower maximum read/write speed then the write speed setting in the camera specs? Example, I have a class 4 sandisk, max speed 15/mbs, but I'm trying to shoot in a mode that writes at 21/mbs. What would happen to the quality of the video? Is it going to be a drastic change?
@MrSupersteez If you mean that you'll videotape on the sideline as others do the action sports, then yes. But I wouldn't recommend this camera if you'll be carrying it on a snowboard or other type of action yourself. It's better to get a helmet cam (like GoPro or Contour HD) for rough work. But again, if you'll be videotaping on the sideline, it's a great camera with a pretty good wide angled lens. Another option is the Panasonic TM700. It's small but the video is great.
@kruff10 The HMC150 is a great camera. It's the best I've used. If you need a larger format camera that has lots of controls, the HMC150 is the one. The chips indeed are not full-raster. But the image is oh so good.
If you can live with a smaller version, with less controls, the Panasonic TM700, is an excellent choice. It's a small camera, but the image is awesome.
But if you have $3000+, go for the HMC150. At HowNowVide(dot)com I offer a 5-hour DVD to teach editing on Adobe products.
@dteubner oh alright... i was thinking about just investing in the canon xf100 because it is supposed to have the great features of the xf300 or 305... but so much more compact
@skateitupable The Canon might be a good choice. I haven't tested it myself. Good luck making a decision. I'm sure whatever you choose will be a good choice. Video cameras are all high-end these days.
@kruff10 On my website HowNowVideo(dot)com you can find links to a reputable seller of the HMC150. I don't trust any other source. Beware of super low prices. They are usually scams. The camera costs a little over $3000 I believe.
you dont need that high a spec computer to work with this camera or the AVCHD codec. i can edit with premiere pro cs3 using a single core processor and footage from this camera just fine.
@KrisMo327 Not sure. I believe Macs first transcode to ProRes on import from AVCHD. I'm selling a 5-hour DVD of training where I include some AVCHD footage which you could test before purchasing the camera. Check my website (HowNowVideo) for more info.
@KrisMo327 sure you can edit with FCE - also I would recommend the newest version of Toast. It will convert the AVCHD folders no problem. also IMovie 08/09 will load them for editing with total ease
What's going on Dave? I am really interested in buying this camera but I am not if it is the right choice. My goal is to become and news reporter, but the word around the industry is that reporters are eventually going to know how to shoot, edit and report. My goal is to get a good camera to practice my shooting, make silly videos, put together some demo news reports, and hopefully catch some breaking news and sell it to TMZ or one of the local news stations.
@aron3879 The HMC150 is one of the best cameras around in that price range. I've use a few in my day, and once you learn this camera, you'll find it works great. If you're producing for news, you'll need to check with the news industry to get a sense of what type of footage and format they recommend. You can always convert the AVCHD into something the news services will want. If you know anybody in the news industry, ask them. Buying a camera is always a leap of faith.
Hey again - thanks so much for getting back to me. I was thinking HDMI would be the solution possibly to keep the capture in HD fromat. I'll keep looking for an answer. Peter
Hello and thnaks for the demo. I want to record directly to my computer using Adobe's On Location program, but I didn't see a firewire connection. How would I input my video signal directly to my computer to use On Loacation? Thanks. Peter
@Bluesguy22 Good question. I often wondered that myself. I don't think you're able to do it. Perhaps you would have to have a HDMI card in your computer and go from the HMC150 to that card to use OnLocation. Not really sure. You could ask that question at DVXUser for. Search Google. They can definitely answer that. Sorry I couldn't help more.
@lotsaEntertainment I prefer the HMC 150 over the Canon, but the Canon has a sweet lens at X20 zoom. To get tape into your computer you just need to connect the Canon using Firewire. I've been using my Panasonic for over a year now and loveit.
@lotsaEntertainment For the HMC 150, just drag over the AVCHD footage. It's quick. For the Canon, you'll need to play the tape back into your computer at real time. One hour of tape equals one hour of playing that back into your computer.
@beachman41 I believe Apple first transcodes AVCHD into Apple ProRes. Then it's easy to edit. But you might want to ask the question at Adobe's website. Go to the user Forums under the Support link and choose Premiere Pro. Ask the question there. I don't work on a Mac. Good luck.
I'm in the market for a semi pro camcorder, however The AG-HMC150 AVCHD, seems to be too simple for my touch on these types of devices. I have been looking at other reviews and found the Canon XL2 to be very appealing, but I do like the idea of Direct SD recording. I don't think the Canon offers direct to digital memory for their videos do they?
@ckaye1100 The new Canon XF300 looks promising. It's the latest tapeless version of the XH-A1. I haven't reviewed it yet, but it looks promising. Go to HowNowVideo and go to the Get Gear link. Then click the video ad and do a search. I don't know much about it but hope to get my hands on one to review.
Wondering if you've taken the Sony HDR-AX2000 for a ride as well. I have been reading through the manual for the HDR and there are a lot of similar functions between the 150 and the 2000. The zoom on the 2000 seems a little better than on the Panasonic and the big difference is CMOS (Sony) versus CCD (Panasonic). I know there are pros and cons if you get a chance can you write me a note and tell me what you think. I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
@moombakamberra I've reviewed the Sony HXR-NX5U which is similar to the Sony HDR-AX200. View my reviews at at HowNowVideo or search dteubner on YouTube. I don't plan to review the HDR-AX200. My review of the Sony HXR-NX5U should give you a sense of what the HDR-AX200 is like.
Thank you very much for the time and effort in putting this video together. It is greatly appreciated. It looks like a really decent camera. I can't wait to get one. Thanks again.
thank you! I just bought this, I was going to buy the A1-XHs but I was told miniDV was dead. You just showed me where everything was. better than reading a manual! -WhitneyKids Enterprise
@HighVoltage559 Try Sony Nightshot cameras. I think Sony is the only major manufacturer that has night vision on many cameras. Search for "Sony Nightshot" on Google and see what you find.
@HighVoltage559 I use the Panasonic HMC150. I had the Sony on loan for a week. I liked the lens and white balance features. I would like a longer zoom on the Panasonic, but its wide angle is great. I think I like the HMC150 better.
@HighVoltage559 Not sure. At my website, HowNowVideo (dot) com I have links to my reputable source. I've never tried those bargain places. They make me nervous.
@HighVoltage559 That's sounds good to me. Because I normally transcode the AVCHD into standard def, editing isn't a real problem. I have a similar computer as yours and editing raw AVCHD is doable but it can be a little slow. The new Premiere Pro CS5 and newer nvidia cards now improve the performance of AVCHD editing and I'll be getting a faster nvidia card soon to take advantage of CS5's "Mercury Playback Engine." Good luck...
You don't need a major system for the Mac w/Final Cut because you never edit the actual AVCHD footage. You turn it into ProRes first (I use ProRes LT, which looks almost identical to the original) via Log & Transfer which gives you larger files but which are less taxing on the CPU and easier to edit. The Log & Transfer process does take some time based on your system, but it isn't any worse than Log & Capture w/tape and completely automated.
@NickCatal You are correct! AVCHD is a dog to edit natively. I know Premiere Pro CS5 and the new invidia graphics cards working together will finally bring smooth editing of AVCHD. But on the Mac, you're all set.
Finished a short film with this camera the other day. It's in my channel if you want to see maybe a bit more of what the camera is capable of. Film is called "Easy Over."
Potentially, I've rad comparisons and the only thing better is the drop and edit, so you can begin editing faster rather than having to import footage. But they are essentially the same camera, but the 100u runs around 3,000, while the panasonic runs about 1800. So Price wise the panasonic is the way better deal, unless you want to pay an extra 1200 just to edit faster
New the 150 and the hm100u are both exactly 3,495... used I can get the HMC150 for probably 2200-2500 and the HM100u 2400-2800.. I am trying to find a used HM100u for 2500 or less.
I love it! We use the DVX100b at school and this is simply the AVCHD version. Identical in features and for the most part, button interface.
I wouldn't suggest editing AVCHD natively because it requires such processing power to decode. Best to create proxies first.
On my Macbook Pro (2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM) I simply import my clips in ProRes Proxy, do my video edit, sound, color correction, and then recapture in ProRes HQ for final distribution and Storage. A wonderful workflow :)
Okay, I have a MacBook Pro with Final Cut Studio 2, I have an external hard drive but I would get a new 1tb hard-drive if I got this camera. Its 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, the memory is 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Would it work? If not could I upgrade ram cheaply for it to work nice a smoothly? Or would it already work smoothly?
I don't use Apple, but my understanding that Apple computers will automatically transcode AVCHD to Apple's ProRes format, which should edit smoothly. Your best bet is to go to Apple's website to their Support section (user Forums) and ask your question there. Best I can offer.
This has already been asked but not answered so, can anyone say whether an intel Macbook Pro with core 2 duo will be sufficient to edit AVCCAM/150? My mac has a 2.53 ghz proc' with 4GB Ram and a 7200 rpm drive. Please help.
it should work just fine my computer is a mac and and old one and can still handle avchd people say its sooo hard to edit but it really isnt. render times do go up and exporting times do go up. but it can still handle it. yours will do fine.
My laptop is an Inspiron N4110. Could it handle this camera? I'm looking into new cameras and this one seems like the best I've come across, but I don't wanna waste money on something my computer can't handle.

is there any quality difference between class 4,6,8 and 10 sd cards?
EricPiencka 6 months ago
@EricPiencka No quality difference that I know of. The SDHC Class 10 cards reformat in the camera within 2 seconds compared to around 10 seconds for reformatting the Class 6 cards. So that is faster. But image quality is the same.
dteubner 6 months ago
@dteubner @ericPiencka Actually, there is a difference. The higher the class, the faster the card can read a right information. So if you are looking to have high quality video, than go with the class 10, if you just need it for home videos (or things where quality doesnt matter) get the class 6. Good luck deciding.
dteubner 6 months ago
I just recently bought a HMC150 and have two wireless mics to go with it. The only thing is when I put the mics into the seperate inputs and load it into CS4 there is only one audio track instead of two. Do you know what would be causeing this?
Samps1188 6 months ago
@Samps1188 Yes. The audio track in Premiere Pro is in stereo, meaning it is your left AND right audio track from the HMC150. If you want to bring those two channels of audio in as two mono tracks, do the following: Import your video into Premiere Pro. BEFORE dragging the clip into a timeline (sequence) right-click the video in Premiere and choose Modify >>Audio Channels. Choose the Mono. Now when you drag the clip into a timeline (sequence) your audio will drop into two mono tracks instead.

Would you recommend the ag hmc150 over the panasonic hvx200a?
LethargicBannanazZ 6 months ago
@LethargicBannanazZ The hvx200a is a larger camera in bulk, records to tape AND P2. I believe the image quality is similar to the HMC150. However the hvx200a uses P2 cards which are expensive. That said, Pansonic will soon be launching the AG-AC130 which sports a 21x zoom lens. Costs more, but if you need a real zoom, it might be a good choice. But I love my HMC150 and been using it for 2 years. Best camera I've owned to date.

@TheShootTruth10 With the HMC150 you'll need the bigger battery and a shotgun mic to add. You can visit HowNowVideo(dot)com and click on the HMC150 at the bottom of the page (little ad) and check the accessories for this camera.

tbabbitt44 10 months ago
@tbabbitt44 Macs first transcode the AVCHD into ProRes. So you'll need to wait for that process to finish while importing. But once in ProRes, I understand that editing will be smooth and easy. I don't own a Mac so I can't test it. You could ask your questions at DVXUSER. It's a free forum of Panasonic enthusiasts. You'll need to create a free account to post a question, but Mac users are surely there. Good luck.

@hobocamptheater I believe Macs first transcode the AVCHD into native ProRes format. Not 100% sure, but you could ask your question at DVXUSER forum. Lots of HMC150 users there that might be able to answer your question.
dteubner 1 year ago
@hobocamptheater If you are using final cut it will automatically scratch the files and turn them into MOV format. If you are using Premiere you can just drag and drop the MTS files from sdcard. Playback in will depend on your ram memory size. I edit AVCHD on an Imac in both progrms with only 2gigs of ram its not as fast as I would like but usable I will be upgrading my ram.

StuartHaight 1 year ago
@StuartHaight The HMC150 has a better image I feel. If he shot the video too hot (with +6 gain) then the two cameras may not match. The HMC150 has larger chips than the HMC40, so it should be better in low light.
dteubner 1 year ago
Hey David, I have a question about the sd cards that this camera uses. What would happen if I use a card that uses a lower maximum read/write speed then the write speed setting in the camera specs? Example, I have a class 4 sandisk, max speed 15/mbs, but I'm trying to shoot in a mode that writes at 21/mbs. What would happen to the quality of the video? Is it going to be a drastic change?

would you recommend this camera for action sports?
MrSupersteez 1 year ago
@MrSupersteez If you mean that you'll videotape on the sideline as others do the action sports, then yes. But I wouldn't recommend this camera if you'll be carrying it on a snowboard or other type of action yourself. It's better to get a helmet cam (like GoPro or Contour HD) for rough work. But again, if you'll be videotaping on the sideline, it's a great camera with a pretty good wide angled lens. Another option is the Panasonic TM700. It's small but the video is great.
dteubner 1 year ago
Hello dteubner, i am thinking of getting the hmc 150, but have heard that the ccd chips on it are not full hd chips???
what is ur take on this?
kruff10 1 year ago
@kruff10 The HMC150 is a great camera. It's the best I've used. If you need a larger format camera that has lots of controls, the HMC150 is the one. The chips indeed are not full-raster. But the image is oh so good.
If you can live with a smaller version, with less controls, the Panasonic TM700, is an excellent choice. It's a small camera, but the image is awesome.
But if you have $3000+, go for the HMC150. At HowNowVide(dot)com I offer a 5-hour DVD to teach editing on Adobe products.

What's going on Dave? I am really interested in buying this camera but I am not if it is the right choice. My goal is to become and news reporter, but the word around the industry is that reporters are eventually going to know how to shoot, edit and report. My goal is to get a good camera to practice my shooting, make silly videos, put together some demo news reports, and hopefully catch some breaking news and sell it to TMZ or one of the local news stations.
aron3879 1 year ago
@aron3879 The HMC150 is one of the best cameras around in that price range. I've use a few in my day, and once you learn this camera, you'll find it works great. If you're producing for news, you'll need to check with the news industry to get a sense of what type of footage and format they recommend. You can always convert the AVCHD into something the news services will want. If you know anybody in the news industry, ask them. Buying a camera is always a leap of faith.

@Bluesguy22 Good question. I often wondered that myself. I don't think you're able to do it.

Thanks.

@HighVoltage559 That's sounds good to me. Because I normally transcode the AVCHD into standard def, editing isn't a real problem. I have a similar computer as yours and editing raw AVCHD is doable but it can be a little slow. The new Premiere Pro CS5 and newer nvidia cards now improve the performance of AVCHD editing and I'll be getting a faster nvidia card soon to take advantage of CS5's "Mercury Playback Engine." Good luck...
dteubner 1 year ago
You don't need a major system for the Mac w/Final Cut because you never edit the actual AVCHD footage. You turn it into ProRes first (I use ProRes LT, which looks almost identical to the original) via Log & Transfer which gives you larger files but which are less taxing on the CPU and easier to edit. The Log & Transfer process does take some time based on your system, but it isn't any worse than Log & Capture w/tape and completely automated.
AVCHD requires too much CPU to edit in real time.
NickCatal 1 year ago
@NickCatal You are correct! AVCHD is a dog to edit natively. I know Premiere Pro CS5 and the new invidia graphics cards working together will finally bring smooth editing of AVCHD. But on the Mac, you're all set.
