  • LOL Did Ethel like the ladies? She sho nuff was kissin an huggin up on Ms Ross!!

  • Amei conhecer esta cantora fabulosa.. No curso Tecnico Adm, na aula de Ética soube da vida desta maravilhosa voz... Ethel me conquistou!!! Olha que tenho 40 anos... Como é incrível viver e se puder desfrutar de uma voz dessa, a vida fica melhor ainda....

  • Ethel and Diana together is just lovely!

  • If one ever see's the entire Hollywood Palace from 3/69, you would see how DIANA ROSS truly out shines the Supremes and her contemporaries of the day. No wonder she was already being called a legend in the 70's. Thank you Diana. Your much loved.

  • @leplaq, Diana Ross did more for Ms Ballard than Motown and Mary. Things the media never mention are, she sent her money after she left Motown many times, diana also gave Mary money many times, Diana sent Ms Ballard's kids to School and they only have praise for Diana today, Ms, Ballard had some substance issues that you can't just throw money at, Give Diana her props and Respect. Peace...

  • Why dont todays young stars pay this kind of honor to the legends that are still amongst us, can you image Rhianna & Nancy Wilson sitting like this together just bonding

  • @Genevaave No. That's because Rihanna isn't fit to shine Nancy Wilson's patent leather pumps.

  • I wonder how many people know how tough Ethel Waters' personal life was. To start with, her birth was the result of her mother being raped at knife point. It's a miracle that she overcame what she did and had such a fantastic career. Bravo! Thanks for posting this clip.

  • These two women on stage together are a symbol of progress in our society for African Americans. Ethel Waters took stereotypical roles because they were all that was available to her. She was nominated for Best Actress for playing a wash woman in "Pinky" in 1949. A few years after this, Diana Ross would be nominated for Best Actress for playing a very glamorous Billie Holiday in "Lady Sings the Blues". Ethel Waters paved the way for Diana by playing the tough roles so Diana wouldn't have to.

  • I can’t get enough of this duet. Diana has always song well with others; trademark of a good singer. She is blending so well with Ms. Waters nice voice because she is listening to her, before she responds. I even noticed that when she was humming with her mouth open, her volume got a little loud & Ms. Waters gently tap her arm. Diana quickly adjusts and hums with a closed mouth & lowers her voice. That’s harmony, that’s reverence, that’s control. Whoever she sings with, the song is usu. a hit.

  • @classanddignity i agree. many say that mary and florence were great together, and they were but diana is also excellent at harmonizing.

  • This is also historic to have Ethel performing Suppertime in it's original context...WOW!

  • ...and Miss Ethel Waters was not known as particularly gracious to fellow performers, this is lovely.

  • What a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful duet. Two great singers BLEND two distinctive styles and voices to create a touching piece. I am all cheese and tears.

  • I think I'm gonna cry.

  • This song leaves a lump in your throat.

  • Those who suggests that Diana Ross does not have a great voice are confusing a myriad of vocal runs, loudness, and complicated phrasing with the God given purity of an instrument, even when on occassion the singer executing a song may by Europeans preoccupations with sharps and flats misdiagnose genius talent as bas singing. Diana Ross is one of the voices of this modern era.

  • it is fantastic : the two godmothers of music together

  • it is fantastic : the twe godmothers os music together

  • Their voices are so beautiful together. Ms. Waters' beautiful personality just shines through in this video...I can't stop watching the "bread and gravy" part of this

  • Ethel Waters...outstanding...hard to find a class act such as her these days!

  • Ms Waters had such a warm and inviting personality.

  • i agree, although i dont consisder Diana the best singer she does have a great voice that is much stronger now than before and although i dont know what hapened with the group i stil think she coulda did a bit more to help florence out (if they ere such good friends). just my thoughts

  • What a truly special treat - the two "soft voices" of African American superstars - pretty fitting - artistically speaking. And word has it they could pull the same Diva antics off-stage.

  • Wow!

  • I love the way Miss Waters embrace Diana.. she is an angel!.. she is an angel!, I like "Suppertime".. she is an actress, I have heard that song with Barbra Streisand.. wow wonderful ladies all of them!!

  • Wow!!!!!!

  • Real talent.

  • @2toofine took the words out of my mouth

  • I hopeee ill meet diana ross one day she is amazing and this performence is pure genius.. lovelovelove it!!!!!!

  • Love Ethel!!!!! She was great when no one remembers! No many are in her class!

  • yes sweet mama string bean...thank you so much for your labor!! many people don't know that she introduced stormy weather to the world!! lena carried the torch, but this was one of first black women in showbiz and film!!

  • This is truly Black history.

  • oh my goodness - I love EW so much.... :) Thank you for posting.

  • Nice!!!

  • THAT WAS HEAVEY.BEAUTIFUL.

  • Wow! Diana's voice is so amazing. This is really History. Great to see two legends.

  • GOOD LORD THAT'S GOOD STUFF! I agree...it nearly got the best of me, too. VERY GOOD STUFF!!!

  • I love how it seems like the two are just having a conversation, and Miss Ethel breaks into song, and I realize the conversation was planned.

  • i nearly cried myself. i never saw this before, but i remember when it aired. i was only about 12yrs old..didnt understand why the older lady was crying..but now it near brought me to tears..she went from come to intense to hysterical..and the thought of a lynching is something to cry scream and be hysterical about..that was a deep performance..that showed a part of history the world never wants to visit again. thanks for posting

  • So brilliant. She pulls the best out of whoever she's with. She even brought out a new quality in

Diana Ross's voice that I hadn't heard before.

  • @daniel15671 yes she does but this shows just how versatile diana was. she could and did sing with anyone and everyone and always slotted in perfectly. she was and is a star for sure.

  • Ethels in great voice for a woman her age.Diana looks like a little girl but cute as can be.

  • When I first saw this live over 40 years ago, I didn't appreciate how much this clip would mean to mean now (2010).This was one of Diana's idols and this clip from 1969 is more relevant than ever. This is really Diana at her best!

  • shit i would like to see this on tele these days...fuck everything and everyone is cold

no one performing it warm like they just did

  • Breathtaking! Purely stunning.

The wise Ms. Waters teaching the young Ms. Ross. Watching this you know that a special "knowing" is being passed in this moment from one generation to the next and you know that it will only happen once.

Who more eloquent than Ms. Waters (the keeper of the flame) to pass the torch to a bright-eyed Ross in her beginnings?

Brings tears to the eye. Beautiful. Beautiful.

  • In addition to being a wonderful entertainer, Diana Ross really was the transitional entertainer that broke thru the racial barriers once and for all. After her stunning talent and success, the doors finally opened for good. I wish she got more credit for this achievement.

  • @kenhamlett1

Diana may have opened them "for good", but the late great Ethel Waters was the vision that showed there was even a door to open. Before she became America's favorite colored entertainer, as far as popular perception was concerned, there was only a solid wall. Perhaps her most direct successor was Billie Holiday (b. 1915)--listen to her first record, "Your Mother's Son In Law"--the swing and diction (which she quickly abandoned) is all Waters.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I've been searching for Ethel Waters' rendition of Suppertime and this is magnificent. I only wish I could find the clip of the song alone (it was great fun to see the Diana Ross portion too, but I've been looking specifically for Suppertime clip).

  • I have longed to see this for years. Ethel Waters was the greatest actress and singer of them all - and her many followers, from Lena Horne to Diana Ross, all recognized this. I've heard the record of Suppertime, but her performance of it is towering. I can understand the poster who remains haunted by it after all these years. I don't know how any performer could follow that. Can you please put Ethel Waters name in the tags, so fans like me can find this? Thanks so much for posting.

  • Thanks for pointing that out to me. Sometimes it takes so long to upload a video, I forget to go back in and finish the tags. All fixed now.

  • Thanks for adding the tags - and most of all, thanks for posting. That performance of Suppertime is one of the great moments in TV history - the expression on her face just before the end of the song is remarkable, haunting and very, very moving.

  • @dentelTV2 ... nice job dude - just luv this ... thanks ...

  • This is why everyone should play a musical instrument. The respect shown here was genuine and a mark of class.

  • Diana was 23 or 24....She also did a wonderful performance on Danny Thomas as herself..wanting to go back to school. Lovely

  • abosolutely classic. you can see ms ross' respect and admiration for ethel. she seemed to really understand that ethel waters along with so many of the other great ladies of that time paved the way for her.

  • People today don't know this kind of talent. Sweet. really sweet.

  • Diana Ross Beautiful !!!! I thought she was beautiful in 1965 when I was 14 & I'm 57 now

    Sam

    class of 69'

  • Ethel Waters made Diana look like a very little girl!! lol

  • wow, that must have been pretty incredible when it went out on TV over there.

  • the duet is wonderful - Diana harmony is brilliant and Ethel is at her incomparable best - her performance of Suppertime reminds why she was the first black superstar.

  • Love it when Diana is melodic/harmonic. Who knew she'd make a great background singer? Haha. Great performance. what was she, like 23 here? Amazing.

  • Astounding performance. One of the last greats. I saw this air on TV in 1968 adn loved it. To this day it still touches me to see Ethel Waters. She has so much history i must read about.

  • After the election of Mr. Obama this kind of video history is vital. The number Suppertime was so haunting, it is impossible not to wonder how many women actually lived through that very tragic moment in America's troubled history.

  • look how skinny diana is. It almost looks as though she is aenorexic...

  • There's a star quality and charisma and charm that entertainers like Miss Waters had that I don't see anymore. Louis Armstrong had it. Jimmy Durante had it. Martha Raye had it. Thanks for postiing this sweet reminder of how wonderful Ethel Waters was.

  • Can you say Ethel?

  • SUCH a BEAUTIFUL and inTENSEly efFECtive woman! I LOVE her!!!!!

  • Diana played her in her Tony award winning special An Evening With Diana Ross! I never knew she had met her. This is amazing! Ethel Waters and Diana Ross!

  • I have always wanted to see this, and now I can, thank you so much.

  • I was there for the taping of this show, I remember sitting in the third row. After all these years Miss Waters stellar performance still haunts me to this day.

  • By the way, denteltv2!

If you have the video of Ross doing that solo African dance on TCB (or was it GIT) PLEEZE post it for the fans!

  • Ohhhhh......My Lord in heaven! This is masterful! And I thought I'd seen them all!

Whew ! ! Bravo, Divas, Bravo!

    THANK YOU, denteltv2!

  • Miss Ross carries herself with such such grace and sophistication..youd foreget she was only about 23 during this time..they dont make'em like that no more

  • she was 25 at this time in 1969 when her and the supremes ( Cindy and Mary and of course Ms. Ross) did this tv appearance. Diana's b-day's in March.

  • Don't get me wrong... Ethel Waters was known for her bad temper during her career. Diana Ross was known for her temper as well.

  • Diana was known in certain circles for having demanding moments, that which was highly exaggerated by the public to begin with, but not an all around bad temper. Get it right.

  • Two legends on one stage! Diana was the best!

  • Damn!!! Ethel's peak of the song after 8:00 is incredible

  • Sweet Mama Stringbean and Motown's Twiggy on the same stage. Both had badd tempers

  • I love the song "Suppertime". Streisand does a great verison on her "People" LP.

  • People can be so petty...How this comment warrented to negative votes is preposterous.

  • I JUST WANTED TO TELL YOU THAT UPON HEARING Ethel Waters I immediately thought of the Strisand version which is also one of my favorites

so you see you are not alone .

  • What is the name of the song that Ethel Waters and Diana Ross are singing?

  • "bread and gravy" one of waters' signature numbers.

  • OMG!! I am so grateful to see this again; I didn't think I would. Thank you YouTube, thank you poster "dentelTV2". Whenever The Supremes weren't on "The Ed Sullivan Show," they were on "The Hollywood Palace" in a big way.

  • & miss waters is sheer magic. thanks for uploading.

  • this is really how a young star pays tribute to an older legend. ross is pure class.

  • Anyone who still says that Diana Ross doesn't belong amongst the pantheon of great entertainers after seeing this clip, seriously needs to have their head examined.

  • You are absolutely correct. Diana is amongst the greatest of GREAT entertainers. The Ethel Waters, the Billie Holidays, the Bob Hopes, the Frank Sinatras, the Barbra Streisands all orbit around the brightest star...Miss Diana Ross.

  • @StephanAOTTO1 Please,...She's THE queen bro!

  • @StephanAOTTO1 Comments like that come from prejudice people or people who just didn't understand why Diana had such broad appeal. Well, I don't understand why American football has broad appeal. It just seems like one of the dumbest games ever to me, compared to Australian Rugby or Soccer
