I don't agree with Neturei Karta at all...but technically they aren't violating shabbat. You don't have to be "indoors during the Sabbath" . You aren't supposed to build a fire (or use electricity, even though scientifically speaking that's not the same as making fire)--like I am doing now & like you did when you filmed them--and you aren't supposed to carry anything outdoors unless you're within an eruv. Maybe they were violating the "spirit" of shabbat, by attending a rally, but not the law.
Don't remember where they are from, but I believe they (like most Orthodox communities in NY) reside in Brooklyn or Queens. If so, this would require either a VERY long walk or a subway (which costs $2 per trip) over the East River in order to get from where they are in Manhattan back to their community.
Again, I'm not sure how that all works out, but there's probably a violation somewhere.
Most Neturei Karta are affiliated with Satmar and most of them live around Williamsburg (sometimes Boro Park). A lot of others live in Monsey. It's only like a 90 minute walk from Williamsburg to midtown, and that is allowed--as long as your are not carrying on the Sabbath. I went through an Orthodox phase(I'm not observant now-that's why I'm using the computer) and I used to walk 8 miles round trip on the Sabbath to go to synagogue-from one end of Staten Island to the other.
That was when I lived on Staten Island--and my parents lived in a neighborhood where there is no Orth synagogue--to get to the Orth community was like an 80 minute walk. I also used to live in Park Slope, and sometimes I would walk from Park Slope to the Upper West Side on Sabbath and holidays, over the Brooklyn Bridge. It's doable. They also might have been staying at a Manhattan hotel paid for by their Palestinian friends.

And technically, as I pointed out, there is nothing wrong with protesting on Shabbat--as long as they were not holding or carrying signs when there is no eruv. I have to agree with 2112600's characterization of what NK believe to be a religious duty. Their opposition to Zionism is from a religious conviction, so they sincerely believe that protesting it is a mitzvah, and from their PoV there is no violating of the spirit of shabbat--it's not "secular" politics to them. That said, I think they are crazy cranks, nuts, and wrong, and I am glad that theirs is but a minority Jewish opinion. But they are not hypocrites--just stupid.

@tmdrdd No, from several of their videos I've seen so far on Naturei Karta, they are greatly concerned with the state of Israel trying to fool the Jewish people into thinking or into forgetting that Judaism is a religion and not a political ideology. And they are right, many Jews in Israel today don't believe in God and think that you are already a Jew, just by speaking Hebrew and by living in Israel (go check up on these surveys yourself). This is PREACHING and not a secular discourse.

I don't agree with Neturei Karta at all...but technically they aren't violating shabbat. You don't have to be "indoors during the Sabbath" . You aren't supposed to build a fire (or use electricity, even though scientifically speaking that's not the same as making fire)--like I am doing now & like you did when you filmed them--and you aren't supposed to carry anything outdoors unless you're within an eruv. Maybe they were violating the "spirit" of shabbat, by attending a rally, but not the law.

Don't remember where they are from, but I believe they (like most Orthodox communities in NY) reside in Brooklyn or Queens. If so, this would require either a VERY long walk or a subway (which costs $2 per trip) over the East River in order to get from where they are in Manhattan back to their community.
Again, I'm not sure how that all works out, but there's probably a violation somewhere.

Most Neturei Karta are affiliated with Satmar and most of them live around Williamsburg (sometimes Boro Park). A lot of others live in Monsey. It's only like a 90 minute walk from Williamsburg to midtown, and that is allowed--as long as your are not carrying on the Sabbath. I went through an Orthodox phase(I'm not observant now-that's why I'm using the computer) and I used to walk 8 miles round trip on the Sabbath to go to synagogue-from one end of Staten Island to the other.

That was when I lived on Staten Island--and my parents lived in a neighborhood where there is no Orth synagogue--to get to the Orth community was like an 80 minute walk. I also used to live in Park Slope, and sometimes I would walk from Park Slope to the Upper West Side on Sabbath and holidays, over the Brooklyn Bridge. It's doable. They also might have been staying at a Manhattan hotel paid for by their Palestinian friends.

Just curious--What did they have against Waldbaums? I agree they are nuts, but they believe what they believe. And technically, as I pointed out, there is nothing wrong with protesting on Shabbat--as long as they were not holding or carrying signs when there is no eruv. If they are just standing there, yelling, it's not necessarily hilul shabbat--although it is not a "shabbat" thing to do . (I say this as I'm being mechalel shabbat myself by using the computer.)

I pointed out that the NK demonstration doesn't technically violate the Sabbath, I will also point out (A) the IDF doesn't purport to be a religious group that acts in the name of Orthodox Judaism, and (B) Jewish law has always provided allowances for violations of normal Shabbat behavior in matters of self-defense. That includes preventative matters. For instance, Orthodox soldiers in IDF routinely do guard duties and patrol the perimeters of army bases in jeeps and with M16s on Shabbat.

First of all at this event alone they are in a situation where they know they would be filmed and taken pictures of. 2- Carrying signs. Carrying on the Shabb-t is a problem ESPECIALLY the area that they are at which has more then 600,000 people pass by everyday (Times Square) which everyone agrees iss 100% not allowed to carry there.
3- They used the microphone at other times on Shabb-t.

Neturei Karta are crazy cranks. They don't really care about Palestinian rights either, despite what they claim. In their own bizarre way I would say they are also Zionist, even though they'd obviously disagree. They accept the premise that Jews constitute one nation, and that is part of Zionism. However, they believe Jews must remain in Exile forever until King Messiah comes. They are fundamentalist nuts with a theological belief that Jews must never exercise sovereign political power.
