It is well-known that current NBA Basketball Player, Kobe Bryant, has always admired the Boston Celtics, and actually wanted to play first and foremost for the Celtics as Sam Jones is one of his heroes. Thusly, Bryant eventually requested and demanded his current number to be that of number 24.
If anyone has the means to find them, look for clips of CBS' old "Three on Three" TV show, where celebrities and current/former stars squared off before the NBA game of the week. Sam Jones was on several episodes, bombing away from 30 feet with a two-handed set shot.
Sam Jones is a very nice man- he substituted at my school many times, I hope he was doing it out of the goodness of his heart and not because he was in financial needs, they didn't make enormous sums back then as they do now. He is a classy man and I learned a lot from him (and got an autograph). He even wore his 50 greatest players ring, which, when he got it, is simply 1 diamond, not the thousands you see on todays.
I tracked down an authentic replica of his UNCC jersey for 50 dollars...at a VARIETY STORE of all places. So I snatched it, and put it in a jersey frame on my bedroom wall. Since we share the same last name, it kind of suits the mood, as well!
I was a student at North Carolina Central from 2002-2003 and was amazed that there was no banner in the GYM that he helped to memorialize! I made this suggestion to Dr. Ammons and others. After I had left the school-they raised in Jersey in the Rafters, also there are no placards on the campus to commemorate Zora Neal Hurston on Dr. John Hope Franklin, eminent scholars who taught at NCCU. Sam Jones by far is the best shooting guard to ever come out of North Carolina! Add up the rings and viola!
My dad met Sam Jones in the 60's and said he was a nice guy.

@robsports1 There are no diamonds or stones of any kind on the "50 Greatest Players" rings. They are solid 14 karat gold with no stones.
