The Marx bros were choked in movies such as this...when they stuck a lame plot on them and kept them on a leash and used hollywood gimmicks instead of the boys themselves, they were shooting themselves in the foot. They should have let the Bros, run wild and attached an inane plot onto it as they did with the earlier Paramount films such as Animal Crackers, Cocoanuts, Horse Feathers, and their greatest, Duck Soup.
To me as a child this chase was the very best thing ever filmed. My favorite guys busting up in a store - every boy's dream. It must be a stunt double for Harpo skating the top shelf; he was too valuable to risk. Groucho skid turns taught me that. Check Groucho's bike switch around 5:49 - now it's the gag-break-up-bike to unicycle (under a double). - Naughty influence? Once, during a power outtage in a big store I took advantage to tip a huge cage of beach balls over. Yep. I did that.
I've got a great Halloween costume planned this year. I'll be taking 3 classes on the day, so I'll show up for the first one dressed as Chico, quick-change into a Harpo costume for the second class, and do the third class as Groucho...assuming the persona of each Brother as I go.
Lucky for the Marx Brothers that Douglas Dumbrille was such a bad shot and the janitor also chasing the Marxes insisted on awkwardly carrying his broom for no good reason until he loses his grip on it at 4:15. Dumbrille was also the bad guy in Hope and Crosby's "Road to Utopia." He was good at it. This is not the best of Marx Brothers movies, but it wasn't Dumbrille's fault.
Great scene- but I am sure 50% of this is done with Marx stunt doubles. The boys were in their 50's when they did this film, well of course I don't think Harpo in his twenties could do that leap from one lamp to another trick in his twenties. But anyway, still great Marxist fun
Hi fellow MB freaks! I invite you to enjoy my new master class on the music of Chico and Harpo. Free, hilarious, and very educational! Type in "Dave Frank" Marx on Youtube.
i used to watch this on amc all the time.but i still think the three stooges are a little bit funnier than the marx brothers because i watched more of the three stooges than the marx brothers
@pimp3609 nah, the marx brothers are so much funnier than the stooges! the big store isn't even close to marx bros best movie, you gotta see animal crackers, monkey business, horse feathers, and duck soup if ya wanna really laugh
Now this is what I call "real movies!" This stuff could actually make people laugh without showing a whole bunch of filth like todays society. This movie is simply the best! Gotta love the Marx brothers!

Glad this chase scene didn't end of the Marx Brothers' career in films. "The Big Store" was to be their last picture, but "A Night in Casablanca" and "Love Happy" followed.
This is only mildly entertaining. The use of stunt doubles is obvious, and how often can you laugh at the bad guys bumping into each other?
The end: Grover burns the picture, but when photographers try to take his photo as he assumes control over the store and he knows there's a gun hidden in a camera, the jig is up!
wait y r they calling harpo wacky

chasing these guys for a picture is just like a NY electrical supply house chasing a contractor for being over 180 days as usual

This was the beginning of the end for them. You shouldn't have to bring in a funny janitor for comic relief from the friggin' MARX BROTHERS.

This movie is also interesting as a display of the interior of a 1940's department store. Almost like an inadvertant history lesson. :)
