I’m thinking about adding a third monitor to my setup. I would like to have one monitor just for desktop stuff, since screen shots on there always get buried behind other windows.
Thats naff. I have 2 screens atm, but you cant physically watch a movie and do a spreadsheet, while using skype.. msn etc.
2 screens is usefull for the home user like me cos i can view main things such as web browsers etc on one and have msn, music etc open on the other.. i couldnt use 3.
how in hell can he be using 3 monitors with 1 single cable ? cumming from his computer? dosent he need 3 separate outputs ether vga dvi or s video ???
He is economizing world's resources by increasing productivity. It is definitely more economical to buy additional screens rather than buy an additional set of computer and employing more people to do the same amount of job. If you have never experienced the using dual monitor, then you probably won't get my point. Just try it. Don't think you will need 4 though.
It depends on type of work. This video shows wrong reasons for multiple monitors. This user is actually having multiple apps open, in use which works for him since all apps he mentions are low end processor intensive.
If you work in graphics, 3D, video then multiple monitor cuts a lot of hassle to juggle palettes around and lower stress on eyes.
I have 3 monitors which in 3D allows me to have palettes on left, modeling in middle and Camera on Right.
Money ... You are willing to pay $100+/ month for car & house insurance but would you think investing a one time $600-2000 for 3-8 years for your health, decrease of eye strain, lesser wrist strain & more productivity is waste of money? Most people I have watched working, amount juggling in graphic apps is astounding. If you do video overlay & editing 4 monitors is perfect. Obviously you need good video cards & monitors but it is justified for work not fun. Unless you have a lot of money : )
Yeah exactly, almost all high end stock traders ( aka those who make bank doing it and take it seriously) use multiple monitors, usually between 3-6 sometimes even more, just to trade daily. But apparently they are just lazy and shouldn't use more than 2.
no they are not lazy. High volume and high frequency traders need to make split second decisions. having more monitors adds to productivity because you don't have to open and close to switch between browsers and applications. Perhaps this video is a bad example. LOL
Yeah exactly, but Fr0zone662 over here says it is for "lazy people". I didn't know being more efficient is always considered "lazy". But I agree they will make their money back plus profit, so the cost of 6 monitors doesn't mean much.
I helped a guy doing stock stuff setup his computer he did 6 30 inch moniters at 1200 each... plus video cards to run it 300 a peice he spend like 20k on everything..
Dual screen setup!! Too bad YouTube won't let you watch a video fullscreened in one monitor while browsing the web in another (it'll just cancel your fullscreen, leaving you to that tiny screen.) Petition with me to get a "Do Not Break Fullscreen" feature!! Spread my lone video around and get it noticed by the YouTube admins, and in time, we'll be able to TRULY enjoy our dual screen setups!!! watch?v=rQzsLdj6et4 !!!
Ya more than 2 screens is just a waste of space imo. Idc how much work you're doing or what you're playing & watching/doing at once, you don't need 3 lol.
@Cobrax101 When you're playing a game, you aren't supposed to ever look directly at the side monitors, it just offers peripheral vision and makes the game ten times more immersive. You'd have to try it to understand how epic it is lol.
@MrTwinkies2010 Ya I know...just a week ago I was -thinking- about putting a third monitor in because with all the programming and software engineering I do I need the screen real estate...but then I remembered there's always a minimize button and the windows roll tab. =P lol
@crypticspoon93 No I wouldn't. lol Which is why even I said I'm thinking of running a third screen. As a programmer and a software engineer I need all the space I can get. Just when it comes to gaming I can't stand it. Also, seriously you can only -see- so much at one time...why waste the desk space. lol
@TheMatt7000 Why the hello would you use one for videos and then other for browsing? It sounds that you thought it was cool to have multiple monitors and you dont really know what to do with that. I use 2 but never use the second for anything else when watching a video, its the stupidest thing. Do you really need tweetdeck that much? I understand multiple monitors for working, but for entertainment such as video to just get distracted sounds stupid as hell.
@TheMatt7000 So you need to watch a movie and still browse the internet? Sure, you need to have tweetdeck just in case, but browse the internet while watching a movie? Your job sure must be easy then.
@Cobrax101 3 is nice and its alot of fun with games.. i got a single apple LED cinema display @ 2560x1440 lol i got enough real estate on my 27" display
my family has an extra computer that is never used so i just took the monitor and attached it to my laptop and it makes my windows experience a whole lot better :) i have windows vista and adding an extra monitor doesnt mess anything up.
Hello, i have tried this with my laptop. It is really a bad idea. The reason being is you set your resolution and both monitors go to that resolution. If you truly want to dual monitor, you want the same resolution screens,,
This is stupid. Why don't you just use one monitor with high resolution? These four monitors consume energy as one may be six time larger than them. This is low efficiency I mean. You waste energy. Anyway a USB connection for a monitor is really useful.
for audio producers, like myself, it is very usefull to have extra screen real estate so that you can have a wider veiw of a software mixer, or to veiw software synthesizers at the same time. It also makes productivity greater.
You are wright. But I don't think you need 4 or 5 monitors. I am an electronics engineer and I also use complicated software which requires more space so I use 20" 1680x1050 monitor. It's personal choice which one is better - one big or two smaller monitors. Anyway using more than 3 is rarely needed even by brokers for keeping track of large amounts of information at the same time. Photographers use sometimes 2 or 3 monitors for panorama making. But 4 and more is too muck I think.
Yes this is great choice if you need large amount of space (pixels). The monitors are not too big but have large resolution which is great. I don't like 19" and 22" monitor because they have resolution like 17" and 20" but are bigger. These are monitors and not TVs so you don't need them big (only for movies may be). These days it's better to use FullHD TV for movies instead of monitor (personal vision). Hope to have one of theese some day :)
This is extrememly useful. Anyone who has ever used multiple graphics and photo editing programs will tell you that. Same for web designer/coders. Example: you may be working in Photoshop/Flash/Dreamweaver/Notepad all at the same time, haing multiple monitors improves your productivity. Ridiculing someone who uses more than one display is like laughing at a person who upgrades from a 10" CRT
will a sli setup allow me to run 4 monitors? When enabling and disabling sli in the nvidia control panel, when i disable sli link up mode will the disabled card no longer be using extra power(watts) and save electric. SO when i disable sli when i dont need it will it no longer be drawing the extra electric and save electric bills. THe only rean i am considering sli is so i can run 3-4 monitors. COuld i run any cheap nvidia card with my 8800 gts 512 with no problems.
that's awesome, I wanna do triple screen, but I only have one vga port on my laptop so right now i'm only using dual screen on two kinda small monitors (both under 17", and not widescreen) :(
no on any computer. If you dont have another vga/dvi port then u can get an adapter thats dvi or vga to a usb and just plug your monitor into the usb port. The quality isn't as good but its still pretty good
egnilk66: its not a product, all the monitors he uses are connected through USB and not your standard VGA connection. therefore if you get a usb hub, you can connect as many monitors as possible. thats how some people go crazy with even 6 monitors.
Yeah but could someone with 6 monitors on the same computer work on 6 different things? For instance: on the monitors 1,2,and 3 you'd have 3 different websites up. On the remaining 3 monitors maybe you'd have a video game, Notepad and a spread sheet up. Is that scenario possible using the same computer?
If the computer can handle that much processing then yes. I doubt that laptop in the video is able to do that. My plan is to build a computer capable of doing mult screens doing your scenario.
I made mistake. Video play full screen on any monitor i position them fine and i can still operate on the other screen and watch video on the other. But when i tru this with other full screen photo slide shows. the windows slideshow jumps to the primary monitor automaticaly and the primary monitor will not be able to use progrmas whilst the slideshow is in use. It work with full screen video so why not a slideshow. ITs annoying. windows media centre will stay on the monitor is position it though
I can maybe see the point of dual monitors for some uses but 4 monitors is pointless like that, just a novelty, I mean while your doing your powerpoint presentation you cant really watch a video at same time and if you try to its just distracting you from doing it anyway. CAD, programming and so on are good examples of dual monitor setups.
I figured the point was to show that one *could* have 4 displays at one time, not how to use 4 displays efficiently. Everyone has different needs and preferences.
Some people like to have one monitor for their email app (full screen), one for their blog aggregator (full screen), and one or two others to actually work on. So although you *attend* to only one monitor at a time, you are still using the others to do various tasks that you can track intermittently.
I am running dual displays on xp. When i double click a video to full screen mode on my secondary monitor it automatically jumps to the primary display. Is there any way to make it stay full screen on the seconday display?
I'd like to know the answer to that question, too! From what I can tell, windows pop up where they want, how they want, and there's not much control the user can have. It's aggravating.
Dude, stop trying to explain why this isn't super fucking geeky.

I do not have to close and open any windows.

What is your reccomendation for dual monitors at different resolutions?

There is no real limit where more monitors are useless.
you get as many as you need. Music producers might need 3, 3d Modelers 2...
Or if you just WANT TO you can spread ordinary programs to those monitors too. Its more "fun" at that point.

I think this is a thing that many would try just because it will fascinates them, but I don't think it has much of use
Plus it reduces the performance so people having lower model of processor or lower ram will have a lots of trouble using it.
good to learn how to do it, but there is no real use of it.

Do your screens get gradually smaller from right to left or are they all the same model/size?
djoutlaws 3 years ago
The screens can be all different sizes and resolutions, but in this setup they are all the same size accept for the laptop which is smaller.
MTROVER1 3 years ago
with the laptop you can waste even more time-on the go!

can you masturbate and upoload the video on those 4 monitors of yours for us to see?

will a sli setup allow me to run 4 monitors? When enabling and disabling sli in the nvidia control panel, when i disable sli link up mode will the disabled card no longer be using extra power(watts) and save electric. SO when i disable sli when i dont need it will it no longer be drawing the extra electric and save electric bills. THe only rean i am considering sli is so i can run 3-4 monitors. COuld i run any cheap nvidia card with my 8800 gts 512 with no problems.

that's awesome, I wanna do triple screen, but I only have one vga port on my laptop so right now i'm only using dual screen on two kinda small monitors (both under 17", and not widescreen) :(
HungryForTech 3 years ago
u can get a splitter to have more monitors
lbulcaansc11 3 years ago
So can i literally drag programs from one monitor to the other and use them the mouse just freely moves from one monitor to the next?
CustomBuild 3 years ago
yea
lbulcaansc11 3 years ago
Is that only on osx?
CustomBuild 3 years ago
no on any computer. If you dont have another vga/dvi port then u can get an adapter thats dvi or vga to a usb and just plug your monitor into the usb port. The quality isn't as good but its still pretty good
lbulcaansc11 3 years ago
so could i have 3 different full screen applications on each monitor and just drag the mouse to use each. Like a game, sony vegas and msn?
CustomBuild 3 years ago
yea
lbulcaansc11 3 years ago
would it still work like that with a matrox head2go?
CustomBuild 3 years ago
i dont know what that is
lbulcaansc11 3 years ago
egnilk66: its not a product, all the monitors he uses are connected through USB and not your standard VGA connection. therefore if you get a usb hub, you can connect as many monitors as possible. thats how some people go crazy with even 6 monitors.
if you got the ££££, you can do it.
momurda6 4 years ago
6 monitors?!?!
AcuteAnalogy 3 years ago
maybe not that one but you could easily build a computer to handle that plus more with no problems
GunmetalSR 3 years ago

MarksmanKen 4 years ago
It's not pointless.. I use 3 and I still need more lol.

I figured the point was to show that one *could* have 4 displays at one time, not how to use 4 displays efficiently. Everyone has different needs and preferences.
entre2chaises 4 years ago 2
Some people like to have one monitor for their email app (full screen), one for their blog aggregator (full screen), and one or two others to actually work on. So although you *attend* to only one monitor at a time, you are still using the others to do various tasks that you can track intermittently.
Different strokes for different folks.

I am running dual displays on xp. When i double click a video to full screen mode on my secondary monitor it automatically jumps to the primary display. Is there any way to make it stay full screen on the seconday display?
chunder123 4 years ago
I'd like to know the answer to that question, too! From what I can tell, windows pop up where they want, how they want, and there's not much control the user can have. It's aggravating.
entre2chaises 4 years ago
what about using 3d desktop effects with dual monitor set-ups?
prelan 4 years ago
Can you show what your Display Settings look like in this configuration? Does it show four monitors?

can you have multiple windows start menus? Instead of just one.
