  • Awesome song by awsome band. Brilliant in every respect. The vocals are just some of the best I've ever heard. Pitch perfect...or very close at least.

  • Very talented person,

  • Todd at his best..during the good days...Will always be the greatest!

  • Hey, I like the screwup, here. It's great fun to Karaoke the first lines for Todd.

  • This sounds phenomenal... rundgrenfan, you've once again outdone yourself. Lord he was TINY then, looks like he has a 14 inch waist!

  • I would hate to be the guy on the soundboard after this show. I'll bet it was brutal. You could tell Todd was pissed!

  • If you have told one lie, that makes you a liar. If you have stolen one thing, that makes you a thief. JESUS said; if you look at a person with lust, you commit adultery in your heart! Ever used GOD's name in vain; then you are a blasphemer and can't enter GOD's kingdom! Rev. 21v8 says; "All liars will have their part in the lake of fire!" The bible says; No thief or adulterer will inherit GOD's kingdom! You broke GOD's laws; but JESUS paid your fine! Repent, and trust the Savior!

  • @EXALTEDDIRT WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU POLLUTING THIS SPACE FOR?

  • @EXALTEDDIRT Thank you, Ray Comfort ;)

  • Many of the songs written for England and Dan John Ford Coley were originally from Seals & Crofts. This is a big surprise that this song was authored by Todd Rundgren

  • @suria49 Dan Seals and John Ford Coley wrote the majority of their own songs.Jim Seals and Dash Crofts didn't write their songs

  • Even when the mike doesn't work, he continues like the artist he is! Amazing song! I love he and others of the era, were able to inset faith, love and God into their songs. Peace and Love

  • had no idea todd wrote this....omg! iwas born in 66 and like this era of music so much more than any other! Wow!

  • I was there!!!

    Fox Theatre - Atlanta!!!

    Second row center!!!

Was always either the last song =- or the last encore piece.

  • Great song but terrible version. There was a version recorded in Michigan

around the same time ....that puts this and the lp track to shame.Hopefully,

someone will put it back up soon.

  • Dead mic! I bet he was shitty

  • There may be better vocalists, but Todd is a songwriter. He writes songs that poke a hole in your heart. This one is familiar, but check out The verb to love,. Amazing and timeless. Todd is God.

  • Who could dislike this song? It's beautiful and perfect. Todd is truly a gifted artist.

  • Proof that good musicians lips sync. haha

  • OMG How I loved this song when I was youngin! I STILL LOVE YOU SO MUCH,TODD!

  • England Dan and John Ford Coley had a giant hit with a cover of this song. Still, as good as that version is, there is something special about the original. Which version do you like best???? You can't lose with either of them.

  • Rundgren is it! He is the answer~ looking forward to 9/11/11. See you in Ridgefield CT

  • Go Todd! This is truly an angelic song. This is the answer we all are looking for-Love is the Answer!

  • I love the gospel flavor of this lovely song!

  • He's distracted because his mich is not working--he's sings fine

the band is playing it kinda fast--hard for him to get the range in there

  • Had no idea Todd wrote this! Doesn't surprise me one bit. Have always loved the ED&JFC version but now I can love this too!

  • Love, love, love this song! I love Todd's beautiful voice. This song helps me get through hard times. It inspires me!

  • Todd's voice is pure from the heart soulful not to mention down right human and by that, I mean the good aspect of our species!

  • masrer producer, musician, visionary!!!!! fresh and gifted today as in the 70's

  • I didn't know you wrote this, Todd! You are so inspired and gifted... amazing how you brought such beauty while dealing in such a mess of a world... testament to greater things...

  • @entheos22 He wrote this years ago, but you are still very much on que. with thoughts and his writings. Wish to hear a song that sounds like it could be written tomorrow listen to Leon Russells "Stranger I A Strange Land" unbelievable.

  • Love is the Answer - England Dan and John Ford Coley, there is no other version.

    Thx for writing it Todd!!!!!!!

  • many likes................................

  • Todd's is the best version, and the only one worth listening too!

  • This is one of the greatest songs ever written.

  • its all great music, but thats england dan...

  • @djmikeymix Todd wrote this and his version is good here live. But when he recorded the studio version it was slower and almost sounded like bossa nova. It was very jazzy. But England Dan and John Ford Coley really brought out the true essence of the song and made it a great song. Here performing live Todd is trying to copy their version of the song and not his original version that pales in comparison to theirs even though he wrote it.

  • @MrSmokeydog

Sorry, you must not be more than 45 y/o. England Dan & JFC copied Todd's original version that he recorded with Utopia 2 years prior in 1976. England Dan & JFC certainly enhanced the arrangement with a sax and a cleaner more commercial recording, but they stayed pretty true to the original. In 1997, Todd re-recorded this song in a bossa nova syle on his bossa nova record, "With A Twist" (along with his other hits) over 20 years after he wrote and recorded the original.

  • @MrSmokeydog

I do not agree that the original recording of this song pales in comparison to the England Dan and John Ford Coley version. And I strongly disagree that Todd Rundgren is trying to 'copy their version.' And I won't spend any time trying to convince you of anything. I do want to thank you though for leading make to listen to the original. It's an amazing song and the lyric pretty much precludes me - or anyone - from fighting over it.

  • todd is made of awesome sauce

  • Did Todd write and originally preform this great song?

I grew up in the 70's and always thought this was an England Dan & John Ford Coley song. I like this though.

  • @lefrog001 Yes, Todd wrote it.

  • Wow! SO prolific and UNbelievably talented - Todd is simply a musical genius!

  • God! I cannot imagine the world without Todd Rundgren. Brilliant!

  • 6 pepole don't know what real music is. They are fools. This is amazing.

  • Where did my comment go????? :(

  • Love it!!!

  • Todd was never about drugs. He's always been about the music. He does like polynesian umbrella drinks though...

  • Oh great !!!!

  • such a beautiful song for such troubled times...todd's work is timeless

  • This song should be sung at every church and religious service. Todd sings it with such raw sincere humanity.

  • name of father or three suspects

  • ford colley i thought too todd is god with two ds

  • Thank you for such a beautiful song Todd!!! Love IS the answer!

  • @mrspiderturd is that true???

  • @mattdaddyful

At birth, her Mom claimed that Todd Rundgren was Liv Tyler's biological father. At age 9, Tyler discovered that she was Steven Tyler's daughter after meeting him and noticing a resemblance she shared with his other daughter, Mia. When she asked her Mom about the similarity, the truth was revealed. The truth about Tyler's paternity did not become public until five years later, in 1991, when she changed her name from Rundgren to Tyler, but kept the former as a middle name.

  • @deanernet thanks for the info...I appreciate it

  • The greatest superstar with the greatest band

  • Reminds me of Hall & Oats..

  • If it wasn't for Todd we would never know about Meatloaf and Bat out of Hell. Thanks Todd for taking a chance of different genres of music.

  • The spacesuit getup is amazing! Great song by a great man!

  • Is this thing on?

  • I LOVE U TODD! WHY PRETEND??(:

  • I THINK IM NEAR THE END....

  • He is still an amazing human being and incredible musician, vocalist, song written,

and singer, performer and jokester! Love the man!

@Suzykansas, I couldn't agree more, he probably doesn't give a damn, but he

should be there!!! So should Darryl Hall and John Oates!

  • What was the question?

  • Love Todd...way underrated and overlooked.

  • Can you feel the love...?

  • This song is MIRACULOUSLY good. Why, oh why, don't we sing THIS song in church? Sure, I know: Mr. Rundgren is (from what I can tell) an agnostic. Still -- I'm a committed Christian and I can't listen to this song without getting misty. I sincerely believe it teaches the unadorned truth.

And yes, it is a world-historic scandal that Todd Rundgren, a Mozart-level genius, isn't in the R&R Hall of Fame.

  • A giant in the story of modern music.

  • What a shame about the broken mic. He's a rare talent. Love him.

  • Someone lost their job after this gig- LMAO

    I'm glad it wasn't me.

  • i think todds voice is still beautiful even now, listen to pretending to care, then try to sing it yourself acapella with strings only, ITS A BEATUTIFULLY SANG SONG BY TODD A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO!! he was also a veggie, which i also have practiced and have been thin always!! anyones voice changes over years, it deepens and becomes more mature,,,todd is still great....he has made so many great videos, cds etc, his voice and performances are still AWESOME!! I LUV TODD ALWAYS...deep down inside...

  • Good point vive - my intention wasn't neccesarily to dis the Dave Clark Five as much as th R & R HoF. My point was that IMHO the DC5's contribution to the advancement of R&R seem miniscule in comparisons to the 3 acts I mention and still haven't received the nod they deserve from the R&R HoF. Good discussion - luv to hear others opinions/points of view on one of my favorite subjects; modern music!

  • The "Rock and Roll" hall of fame is a joke! Todd isn't there, Heart isn't there, Rush isn't there but "The Dave Clark Five" are...you make the call!!

  • @kacres1 I've heard The Dave Clark Five were even more famous than The Beatles for a good while. I thought you were going to say Madonna....Wrong example.

  • Todd's not int the Rock-n-roll hall of fame? That's total bull crap. If anyone deserves it he does...Heart isn't in there either which is just dumb.

  • Todd's not int the Rock-n-roll hall of fame? That's total bull crap. If anyone deserves it he does...Heart isn't in there either which is just dumb.

  • Always did love the blend of Todd and Kasim's voice together. Must have 16 times or so over the years. Keep rocking boys.

  • beautiful singing and great performance by todd and his band...this is a GREAT song never loses its meaning as time goes on it will always be true! I LUV TODD always! thanx for the video thans to todd for experiencing life and sharing it...a lesson to learn!

  • Did ya'll know The Jets sampled that song? Ummmm.

  • great teacher!

  • where was this?

  • He is a true genius...this and "Hello It's Me" are unbelievable. He's kinda of pain in the ass to deal with from what I've heard -- but with this talent -- who the hell cares?

  • Religion is bad...religion is rules and laws. Jesus freed us from the law cause none of us can live up to it. God is love...all we need to do is love God and our neighbors as ourselves. Pretty simple.

  • OMG he was actually singing. It's a pizzaro ugly chick from SNL what is her name..........I think ashley simpson?

  • I saw him at Knebworth circa 77? This song closed his set and was absolutely magnificent.

  • Todd also produced The Tubes Completion Backwards Principal, I believe, and was the musical director for PeeWee's Playhouse, among about a million other things he does. He's in Hawaii now, I have been a hay-uge Toddster since the '60's and will see him every chance I get. An internet music pioneer, he was one of the 1st to give away his music online. Xlnt writer, singer, gtr, kybd, drm, koolkat, producer, dreamer.

  • @chubbsuperfly Don't forget that he's also singing lead for the Cars as well now.

  • Perhaps it was just a contact high from the sweet smells in the audience! L.O.L.

  • "I saw Todd Rundgren and Utopia at the Poplar Creek Music Ampheatre in Ho..." more "I saw Todd Rundgren and Utopia at the Poplar Creek Music Ampheatre in Hoffman Estates, Il in 1985-86 as a 5th or 6th grader. At the time Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, & Van Halen were about all that I could digest, at the time. I do remember thinking that they were very unique and innovative as a kid

  • Mr Smokey, Todd was the 2 or third producer that Hall & Oates used. He didn't develop Hall & Oates but did grow up in the same area in Philly as Daryl.

  • oh my gosh, such a classic!!

  • I met Todd in 1978 nor so. He was not on any drug that I know.

I knew the limo driver, he had good tales of all the rockers.

The driver liked Todd, he was no bullshit and a decent tipper.

You can tell, a guy like Todd.

  • Great Tune from a great time ..

    Excellent performance.

  • I understand he raised Liv Tyler and not her biological adsentee father, Steve Tyler of Aerosmith

  • Hey! Didn't (England) Dan Seals & John Ford Coley cover this song?

  • @LeftCoastBias44 Yes, they did and make a pretty good hit of it.

  • he tortured puppies back in the day while on crank. i saw it with my own eyes. bad man.

  • @wijreel you must be high. I've followed the man for 40 years and never, NEVER have I seen any reference to the use of Crank.

  • LOVE is the answer. I get it.

  • actually, he had a prob with heroin in the latter half of the 70's. take a look at the various pix (including the lp cover) from the hermit of mink hollow period sometime. his irises look like 2 piss-holes in the snow (as in VERY pinned). i don't know that any of that had an affect on his voice, that's just aging. he still has an amazing voice & sounds like todd. it's just gotten a bit deeper, same way it did for aretha. she can sing her younger 60's self under the table any day of the week now.

  • I replied to this earlier...admitting that I stand corrected. Perhaps, it will show up someday ;-).

  • @badmuddy Actually, he had a problem with psychedelics, which he speaks about, at length, in "The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect" DVD.

  • @Peter0ctavian

well, that he'd admit to. but it's kinda hard to have that big a prob with psychedelics. he also has had probs with coke, even into this millennium. but heroin was the biggie, big enough to allow all those pics from that period to exist. his eyes are SO pinned, & for him do have done the shoot with clear eyes would have meant he'd have been too junk-sick to do 'em at all. aside from which, heroin was VERY much in vogue during the 70's punk years.

  • @badmuddy Bearing in mind that Todd has been very forthright about his drug use, talking openly about it, the whole heroin thing, even the coke thing, is an opinion. Until you can prove that, it's probably not a good idea to go around spreading an unfounded rumor.

  • @Peter0ctavian a producer/friend of mine i've worked with & for was todd's engineer & assistant, & the only other person (besides todd) credited on hermit, which is the period i'm referring to; let's just leave it at that. otherwise, i do know what heroin addiction looks like, & intimately. i'm a MASSIVE fan, so i wouldn't repeat this lightly. i'm not trying to infer anything, either. if anything, i have that much more respect for him being able to walk away from it.

  • @badmuddy It doesn't matter if you're a massive fan or not, you saying that you "know a guy who was involved with Todd" is the most despicable justification that one can offer for perpetuating a rumor, and that's all it is. It's very admirable that you "know what a heroin addict looks like", but until you can prove what you say, it might be better if you keep slanderous opinions like this to yourself.

  • @Peter0ctavian the guy isn't an acquaintance,

he's someone i know really well, & not prone to gossip. he only confirmed what i already knew. my only mistake is assuming it was common knowledge, & for that, i apologize. anyway, elevating his use of psych's into a "prob" would fall into this "despicable" pursuit.

  • @badmuddy i didn't accuse him of being a raging junky, which would be unlikely seeing as his musical path didn't grind to halt (as can happen with such an all-consuming vice). but i'm not gonna get into the specifics of how i know what i know, as he evidently hasn't discussed it himself. he's 1 of my biggest influences. i have no incentive to force the issue, except to acknowledge coming out the other side can enrich 1's perspectives in looking forward if you take the opportunity to grow.

  • I always liked his version better because it was more Power Pop than ED&JFC.

  • Amazing musician...in the truest sense of the word. Todd comes across as someone who is simply compelled to play. Music is his 'lifeblood'.

In comment to other posts...someone said drugs and time ruined Todd's ANGELIC voice. I don't know that he was very big into drugs (he looks like it...so skinny LOL...but, it doesn't seem right. Music is Todd's drug!).

Someone commented that Todd wouldn't give a shit about the R&R Hall of Fame...I think you're right ;-). Nonetheless - HE deserves it!

  • Absolutely a genius.

  • @Suzykansas Even John Lennon was impressed with Todd and wrote to him expressing this. His music permeates trends, eras, decades, bands and many hearts. Did the Talking Heads do more than Todd Rundgren? I don't think so but they were inducted. What about the Cars??? How in the world can they not be included?? I vote both TR and The Cars be inducted.

  • @muzicul Testify! ; )...how can we make this happen? As for The Cars...the only reason they aren't included on this page..is because I comment about them...on their videos ; )...Couldn't agree more!

  • @Suzykansas Anyone who says Todd's angelic voice is ruined hasn't been listening to him lately. Actually, here in this song his vocal technique and range is not the same as he is capable of delivering now. These days he sings with a deeper voice but with so much more power and flexibility. I've seen him about 4 times in the past 6 years and he puts it out like a warrior, angel and soul brother all in the same show, weather driving metal. solo, or acoustic. I met him 2 years ago, nice man. Peace

  • @jwklbm326 YES YES YES his voice is beautiful! I just saw him July 2011 and his voice is AWESOME!!! AWESOME ♥♥♥

  • @jwklbm326 Peace.

  • @jwklbm326

AMEN!! He just keeps getting better! Love the video of he and Darryl Hall at Todd's home in Hawaii! Absolutely

    brilliant!!! Peace

  • @Suzykansas

Funny, I had a social worker tell me if I didn't continue to play I'd have to pay for therapy!

  • @Suzykansas Psychedelics definitely fueled all the greatest music of the 60's and 70's!!! Todd is still an amazing artist here and now..They still fuel alot of real cosmic genius HA HA!! Look what alcohol fuels! HA HA!

  • I did not know he wrote this. I always thought it was an Ford-Coley song. I like it even more now.

  • @2degucitas todd wrote it for them..it's his song

  • @lisclm Yeah, no wonder it's so good, I like everything Todd does.

  • @2degucitas

I thought this was a Ford song as well.... voice quality?

  • @Burnsengine You mean you want my opinion on his voice quality here? If so I think he's great. He never needs autotune!!!

  • God removed the reference to a ticket to paradise, cause there aint one.

  • No, that hillbilly girl is.

  • Todd is most underrated artist of all time. Fod has indeed blessed Todd.

  • And Todd has blessed Fod. And...Zod. :)

  • I hit the F instead of the G, Woe is me. Thanks Mighty Zen Pagan Warrior

  • god along with fod & sod has also blessed todd too. :) i know what you meant...

  • @MrRivethead ..been to atleast 10 todd shows and you couldnt be more wrong- but it's your loss-

  • i grew up listening to his music and agree withyou chelababy1. isaw him in 70s and 80s, met his bass player in 81 at a rock show in okla , still have the utopia pic , i think he liked my gf more than i peace merry christmas

  • Todd is such a MASTER & GENIUS.Overlooked Ignored, and Misunderstood.

I am on Twitter too supporting TODD using same Username Just Loving Fan

  • God I love Todd! The question then becomes why do you love Todd?

  • Rundgren once upon a long time ago demonstrates the genuis he was and still is !!

  • love is the answer sang also by a pilipino singer,actor...gary valenciano...born-again christian and he was a diabetic patient..but w/ God ..nothing is impossible..still singing and make concerts here and abroad

  • 愛=答。納得。先生、マイクたたく、良くないね。

  • This way shared with me two weeks ago and I have to say thank you to the girls and you know who you are. XXXX TRC. And it makes me smile.

  • fantastic !!!!

  • Does anyone know where to buy the Disco Jets album?

  • I love a singer that works with their ears! :D

  • Didn't somebody else have a hit with this song? England Dan and John Ford Coley or someone like that? I always thought it sounded like a Rundgren tune, however...

  • Utopia released it on Oops! Wrong Planet about a year before the England Dan/John Ford Coley cover.

Needless to say, Utopia and Rundgren did it better.

  • @jonahbegone: Todd Rundgren actually produced that England Dan and John Ford Coley cover.

  • the great todd!

  • Verry good artist, he could be more known and appreciated here in Brazil!

    Thanks Vanilla Sky Movie Soundtrack

  • Brazil.....great music there!

  • I have seen Todd about 20 times since 1973 and it's hard to remember a show where he didn't break a guitar string or there was some other technical issue. You can tell - besides being one of the best musicians ever in every sense of the word - he is a totally professional master showman as he never skips a beat even when there is some setback. THANKS so much for posting this, rundgrenfan!

  • know me ,know you, know todds music, know the 7 tones of the universe.now we know he has the universe.god bless.

  • TODD IS THE ANSWER!!

  • It wasn't a broken mic. The sound guy screwed up.

  • I think it added i little bit of spice, sounds good.

  • Basically, you have to trace the origins back to see where certain musicians started from . Todd Rundgren was the original producer and developer of hall and oates. The man has soul in his

heart if only people could understand the

compassion and genuine love in the way he composes and performs the music.

  • The first time I heard "Can We Still Be Friends," I swore up and down that it was either Fripp-era or War Babies-era Daryl Hall.

  • @MrSmokeydog I saw him with Hall and Oates at Soaring Eagle Casino. They played together and clearly were having tremendous fun. Todd is very underated. He was much more than a pop star.

  • @MrSmokeydog

I see. I did not know at all that Todd was the producer for Hall and Oates. No wonder, I have been so attracted to these gentlement for so many years. In fact, just a few hours ago, I got to see Daryl covering Can We Still Be Friends with Todd with T.Bone.... It isnow crystal clear - the way both Todd and Daryl sing sounds so much alike which I adore for ever!!

  • @Luka0618 he produce Bat Out of Hell for Meat Loaf, too, a platinum monster of an album.

  • One of the best songs ever!! I just love his music!!! And his voice!!!

  • I love Todd and Utopia - But I gotta laugh when I see this because EVERY time I've seen them they've had some sort of technical difficulty on stage. (WTF soundman/ crew??) -They sound wonderful once it's fixed however. They all have such cool voices. Rock on guys!

  • wasn't this covered by england dan and john ford coley?

  • Todd had a great voice, between the drugs and time, its not quite this good anymore. He still is a great talent, he knows music and can go from rock to spiritual, to soul. Good luck with the New Cars Todd

  • God Rundgren!

  • so that's the original. i see. It's very classic! I think its nice!

  • At the very beginning, for a split second it reminds me of Baker Street, I almost expected to hear killer sax.

    Thanks for posting audio therapy.

  • Excellent!

  • I remember back in the 80s, sipping on a club tropicana martini by the hotel pool with palm trees swaying in the end, while I drowned my sorrows of lost love and people who have dissapeared, the grief of life, with the fantasy of this wonderful song, giving hope to the millions of people who have suffered in one way or another. This is a perfect song for anyone who feels jaded at any stage of their life. It worked for me. Now I am married with a beautiful wife and 5 kids.

  • Yeah- rock and roll hall of fame is where he should be.

  • Alas, there are probably people at RRHOF who don't know who Todd is! LOL. Or they think he's "that funny-lookin
