Glad to see its works on puppy. This helped me decide to get it, although eye candy wasn't a priority in case of a cpu that does not boot at all, its cool to have. A smaller distro compared to ubuntu helps on older computers anyway. Very helpful vid & links thanks.
@dublinus its part of Beryl/Compiz-Fusion/Compiz (The software has changed names several times in the past few years, In this video it was Compiz-fusion). Basically Compiz is a compositing window manager with extensible effects somewhat like Aero on windows except it also allows custom mouse and key bindings and many options for effects....
@jonnyattack Why do you say that ... was in fact puppylinux 3.00 with Xfce installed along with wine which I compiled manually. And compiz packages which were compiled by "wow" from the puppylinux forum ... I believe the nvidia drivers were packaged by "gray" who also builds the NOP derivate of Puppylinux...
In fact I built my own derivative off of Puppylinux 2.15ce called Math Pup (It had R and octave preinstalled) BTW I am cb88 on the forums if you don't PM me if you don't believe me.
This isn't exactly the best place to ask try the puppylinux forum ... you can try running firefox from a terminal and see if it spits out any errors... then post them to the forum also in my experience the puppy package manager often breaks and fails to install without error.

just like to say cool vid and the song goes with every thang butt is compiz fusion a pograme that works on any puppy linux and any athere linux 5 starts
no it doesn't work on any version of puppylinux only versions newer than 2.14 iirc and you must use a specific set of packages for each different series of puppylinux this is detailed on the puppylinux forum
on the other hand most modern distros come with compiz either preinstalled or installable with a package manager with is simpler than with puppylinux
there have never been any viruses on Linux to need one... and patches happen extremely fast for known vulnurabilities instead of having a virus scanner sucking your resources
The only one I know is ClamAV but it's not really needed. Using any computer without checking for virus's at least once a month is dangerous now-a-days (even OS X). All KNOWN Linux viruses are no longer "In the wild" the vulnerabilities they attack were fixed when the virus was found. Also it is very hard to run programs or modify system files without the users permission.
That may be true, but open source is typically more secure than commercial software. Most os X viruses are benign jokes anyway, no body really hates mac machines. Lots of people hate windows enough to make viruses (which in turn provides another set of reasons to hate windows).
is there a puplet for this? if so could you possibly provide either the name of it or a link? i love puppy linux. by far the best linux ive ever used... who can argue with a 15 second boot time? lol.
its been ages since I used puppylinux (heh a year or so) ... but since it loads the whole os to ram i can be quite high in that mode since then entire cd is copied into ram... if you are running a regular install it would be much lower and compiz doesn't really use all that much ram just slows down 3d graphics a tad on older cards
well it doesn't have than much impact... for instance my laptop here has a ton of stuff going with about 300mb used I would guess compiz uses around 20mb or less
There is no way to use the 3D effects from inside windows.
But you can boot nearly any version of Linux including puppylinux inside a Virtual machine (a sort of emulator) such as VirtualBox which is free to download and use as well as being quite fast
need to know what version you downloaded and what the problem is
if you downloaded the
ISO and don't know what to do with it google a program called burncdcc and run it since it is a pretty simple program to copy an ISO file to a writeable CD
wNOP is a version of puppylinux that has it you can install it on puppy 2.x 3.x and 4.x maunally of you want just follow the correct instructions for each version on the pupplinux forum
they come with wNOP which is a version of puppylinux also a newer version called ripple or you can install it manually according to the instructions on the puppylinux forum
google wNOP ... also you can install Compiz pretty easily on Ubuntu or Debian (sllightly harder on debian... make sure you use the lenny version if you do go with debian)
haha that is kinda true but there are some neat thinks that come in handy like expose and it is the very best multi desktop configuration IMO. but hey even i just use JWM IceWM and even UDE(for the past week or so) and they are all pretty minimal the only reason i would even use Xfce as in the video with compiz is that it just works and is highly themable very integrated but slightly bloated IMO
the effect`s makes Beryl. I actually don`t know too much about it, coz i`m interested in linux last 3 hours .. just bit googling and you got it . all right buds .. ..
I found this earlier today. I was wondering, I installed it to the USB and all, but I don't get the effects. How do I solve this? and is it supposed to look like XP?
depends on what video card you have if you have anything recent and nvidia it should work fine also ati is said to be working in the latest version and some better integrated intel chips work
you can change how it looks that is the whole point of linux... everything can be changed
there is a version that has it prenabled (called wNOP look on the puppy linux forum and wiki for a download of it) for most versions... the video is of a regular install with xfce added (somewhat required for the wobble) and compiz to render the effects... 3D acceleration is required the easiest way to get all that is with wNOP which supports most nvida cards and intel and some ati cards
Hey how do you get the windows to swirl up from the taskbar like that? I'm on a different distro but still have compiz fusion (ubuntu). I got wobbly windows but not the bit where they swirl up like that? Thx
first you must turn off whatever is manageing your current background... In my case i turned off xfce4 desktop background control from the xfce4 control panel. after that add backgrounds with compiz using ccsm (compiz something... settings manager)in the desktop cube part of the settings manager
