  • Glad to see its works on puppy. This helped me decide to get it, although eye candy wasn't a priority in case of a cpu that does not boot at all, its cool to have. A smaller distro compared to ubuntu helps on older computers anyway. Very helpful vid & links thanks.

  • Watch the 1:40 secs with attention

  • WHATS THE NAME OF THE VIDEO, OMG I REMEMBER IT BUT I DONT REMEMBER THE NAME

  • What's up with the snow flakes? If that's some opengl program, it would make an excellent screen saver.

  • @dublinus its part of Beryl/Compiz-Fusion/Compiz (The software has changed names several times in the past few years, In this video it was Compiz-fusion). Basically Compiz is a compositing window manager with extensible effects somewhat like Aero on windows except it also allows custom mouse and key bindings and many options for effects....

  • obviously not puppy linux

  • @jonnyattack Why do you say that ... was in fact puppylinux 3.00 with Xfce installed along with wine which I compiled manually. And compiz packages which were compiled by "wow" from the puppylinux forum ... I believe the nvidia drivers were packaged by "gray" who also builds the NOP derivate of Puppylinux...

In fact I built my own derivative off of Puppylinux 2.15ce called Math Pup (It had R and octave preinstalled) BTW I am cb88 on the forums if you don't PM me if you don't believe me.

  • Just downloaded firefox through puppy package manager however it will not open. Anyone know why?

  • This isn't exactly the best place to ask try the puppylinux forum ... you can try running firefox from a terminal and see if it spits out any errors... then post them to the forum also in my experience the puppy package manager often breaks and fails to install without error.

  • how do you install xfce on puppy linux?

  • please limit comments to english or portugese... since I have little Idea what you have said.

  • @cusbrar1

its a year late, but he said "we speak the language that we know. if you don't like it, gtfo (essentially) very good puppy linux i tried it in a pentium 3 with 128 mb and a 20 gig hdd with loads of apps the only ones i used were a small version of open office and firefox. also i have one on a flash drive. truthfully im very comfortable with this distro"

    lol

  • @darris321 in that case comment deleted.. seeing as I don't appreciate people getting smart with me. the content is translated by you anyway. I don't mind people posting in other languages but it is kinda pointless If I don't know whether what you said was offensive or not and I'll not be having foul language in my comments. NOW all you people go watch the obey the moderator video LOL!

  • Genial, felicitaciones por el video. Puppy Linux es una gran distro y vemos que puede hacer maravillas que la porquería de Vista y su sucesor no pueden hacer.

  • Each desktop could have it's own Wallpaper? .

  • yep... you can set a diffent walpaper for each side in the compiz settings manager

  • just like to say cool vid and the song goes with every thang butt is compiz fusion a pograme that works on any puppy linux and any athere linux 5 starts

  • no it doesn't work on any version of puppylinux only versions newer than 2.14 iirc and you must use a specific set of packages for each different series of puppylinux this is detailed on the puppylinux forum

on the other hand most modern distros come with compiz either preinstalled or installable with a package manager with is simpler than with puppylinux

  • what kind of anti-virus do u use for this os?

  • there have never been any viruses on Linux to need one... and patches happen extremely fast for known vulnurabilities instead of having a virus scanner sucking your resources

  • is doin that stuff with the wobbly screen hard to do

  • not really it can get annnoying though

  • The only one I know is ClamAV but it's not really needed. Using any computer without checking for virus's at least once a month is dangerous now-a-days (even OS X). All KNOWN Linux viruses are no longer "In the wild" the vulnerabilities they attack were fixed when the virus was found. Also it is very hard to run programs or modify system files without the users permission.

  • actually os x is probably even safer than linux due to its freebsd base... which is super paranoid

  • That may be true, but open source is typically more secure than commercial software. Most os X viruses are benign jokes anyway, no body really hates mac machines. Lots of people hate windows enough to make viruses (which in turn provides another set of reasons to hate windows).

  • is there a puplet for this? if so could you possibly provide either the name of it or a link? i love puppy linux. by far the best linux ive ever used... who can argue with a 15 second boot time? lol.

  • read the comments

this particular video was done with a modified pupppy 3.x but there is a pupplet called wNOP and a few others have compiz as well

  • out of curiosity, what's the ram usage of Puppy LInux with compiz enabled?

  • its been ages since I used puppylinux (heh a year or so) ... but since it loads the whole os to ram i can be quite high in that mode since then entire cd is copied into ram... if you are running a regular install it would be much lower and compiz doesn't really use all that much ram just slows down 3d graphics a tad on older cards

  • u still haven't answered my question dude.....come on....shock me :D

  • well it doesn't have than much impact... for instance my laptop here has a ton of stuff going with about 300mb used I would guess compiz uses around 20mb or less

This is on ArchLinux mind you....

  • lol....my ubuntu setup hardly goes past 220 ram.....ur system is a hog man :)

  • is there a way to boot it from insidee windows

  • There is no way to use the 3D effects from inside windows.

But you can boot nearly any version of Linux including puppylinux inside a Virtual machine (a sort of emulator) such as VirtualBox which is free to download and use as well as being quite fast

  • what is the song???

  • The Ultimate Showdown by Lemon Demon

  • plz help

i just downloaded linux and i cant use it

it says 1% wasent installed corectly i just got it plz help!

  • reinstalling may work, and it may be ur configuration

  • you aren't giving enough info.

need to know what version you downloaded and what the problem is

    if you downloaded the

ISO and don't know what to do with it google a program called burncdcc and run it since it is a pretty simple program to copy an ISO file to a writeable CD

  • please help i cant get it to work i posted a video about it just now click my name watch the problem

  • wNOP is a version of puppylinux that has it you can install it on puppy 2.x 3.x and 4.x maunally of you want just follow the correct instructions for each version on the pupplinux forum

  • they come with wNOP which is a version of puppylinux also a newer version called ripple or you can install it manually according to the instructions on the puppylinux forum

  • google wNOP ... also you can install Compiz pretty easily on Ubuntu or Debian (sllightly harder on debian... make sure you use the lenny version if you do go with debian)

  • I'm just lovin CF! Love linux too :)

  • How do you get Compiz Fusion on it?

  • did you get wNOP v0.2?

  • this video was made before wnop was made... via wow's manual install method you can still find up to date pakages for on the forum

tombh made wnop based on wows work but i think that he compiles a good bit of it himself

  • is compiz pre-installed inside puppy linux, or do you have to install it from the pakage manager?

  • google wnop or look on the puppylinux wiki it has compiz preinstalled

  • cool!

  • pretty good but pointless, I just dont need those "cool" thigs

  • haha that is kinda true but there are some neat thinks that come in handy like expose and it is the very best multi desktop configuration IMO. but hey even i just use JWM IceWM and even UDE(for the past week or so) and they are all pretty minimal the only reason i would even use Xfce as in the video with compiz is that it just works and is highly themable very integrated but slightly bloated IMO

  • I agree, I just downloaded the mostely stripped down version and added what I needed and wanted, not what anyone else wanted. lol

  • what song on the video folks?

  • google "theultimateshowdown"

  • heh, there is a link in the little discription at the side i had forgotten about that also the band is Lemon Demon

  • the effect`s makes Beryl. I actually don`t know too much about it, coz i`m interested in linux last 3 hours .. just bit googling and you got it . all right buds .. ..

  • BeOS and haiku are interesting operating systems too you might want to check them out not as much eye candy yet though

  • I found this earlier today. I was wondering, I installed it to the USB and all, but I don't get the effects. How do I solve this? and is it supposed to look like XP?

  • depends on what video card you have if you have anything recent and nvidia it should work fine also ati is said to be working in the latest version and some better integrated intel chips work

you can change how it looks that is the whole point of linux... everything can be changed

  • how do u enable desktop effects in puppy linux if thats whats it is called not compiz just basic windows wobble

  • there is a version that has it prenabled (called wNOP look on the puppy linux forum and wiki for a download of it) for most versions... the video is of a regular install with xfce added (somewhat required for the wobble) and compiz to render the effects... 3D acceleration is required the easiest way to get all that is with wNOP which supports most nvida cards and intel and some ati cards

  • Hey how do you get the windows to swirl up from the taskbar like that? I'm on a different distro but still have compiz fusion (ubuntu). I got wobbly windows but not the bit where they swirl up like that? Thx

  • use the compiz settings mannager just run "ccsm" in the console

  • how do you setup compiz fusion to have a different wallpaper for each side of the cube?

  • first you must turn off whatever is manageing your current background... In my case i turned off xfce4 desktop background control from the xfce4 control panel. after that add backgrounds with compiz using ccsm (compiz something... settings manager)in the desktop cube part of the settings manager

  • Do you think that Puppy Linux will work on a Intel 167Mhz, 128Mb RAM, 2Gb HDD?

  • yes

  • might run a little slow though do a ful a full install of deli linux might be better for that PC (the developer might be relesing a new version soon)

  • I used puppy on a p-1 120 Mhz w/ 128 ram and 2 GB HD...these abby was made for such machines....u can also try damn small linux(DSL)..which is smaller than puppy

  • Nice work, it looks very cool. I think your CPU is what allows you to get the decent performance. I have a system with a geforce2 GTS with only a 500MHz P3 and Beryl ran like crap. :\

  • the GTS is a rather different card than a MX 400 .... mine uses the 9xxx driver while a gts needs the "legacy legacy" 7xxx driver and will therefore not proform as well... i recommend you get an FX series or higer to replace your geforce 2 gts since they are already bargain bin material ... it may seem logical that the texhnically superior gforce2 gts would be faster but the drivers just don't support it....

  • but must realize that Linnux mint will have a much larger memory footprint....the current wNOP alpha iso of puppylinux is only 130mb with compiz-fusion preconfigured (simple menus to setup drivers for the first boot)

  • Linux mint comes with compiz right out of the box(with the 4.0 version). and it's avalible in Gnome, KDE, and XFCE editions. I've never tried puppy linux though.

  • this thing is not letting me post links so I'll just tell you search for compiz on the puppylinux forum and look for the post by forum member "wow" he is resonsible for getting compiz working in puppy :-)

  • Thanks man, Im currently working on getting it going, like as we type... I've grabbed 301, and have all the .pet packages from wow's post, Hopefully I'll be makin a vid to go on here soon!

  • "compiz-fusion on a minimalist distro so be happy..."

It's freaking amazing is what it is! Have you been on the forum with this yet? There's an old post about getting beryl running on one of the older builds, but nothing even close to this. Would you but up for a creating a cd for us? i have a very similar setup, but as far and drivers and all I'm good, just I don;t think I could install compiz fusion.

  • how did you install compiz on puppy

i have puppy booting from usbdrive please help me!!

  • The only reason I used a camera is that xvidcap slows my PC down too mush it is only an nvidia geforce2 400 MX and a sempron 1.8ghz try running aero glass on that LOL...just answering Q's before the come up. :)

  • yes my video capture skills are noobish at best.... but it's compiz-fusion on a minimalist distro so be happy...
