Rattle and Hum is a terrific album, has always been a terrific album, and has been unfairly maligned for a couple decades now. But I'm preaching to the choir, all of you fine people know the truth.
i don't think Bono can get down to this part of his or voice anymore, or up to the heights he hit on Heartland.. kinda sad how your voice leaves you..

Best U2 album in my opinion and best song from Rattle and Hum. The drums are some of the best I've ever heard. This is a good example of why live events should be released as albums more often. Fantastic absolutely fantastic.
At the time, it seemed like any album following the Joshua Tree was destined to disappoint. but now, 25+ years later, Rattle & Hum is really a pretty damn good album in U2's catalog.
I couldn't have said it more perfectly!! What a dipshit he has turned into. I still love the music but then you think about Bono the wanker and its difficult to listen to.
@CarlyBC everybody says this, but they never exactly say exactly what it is they don't like about Bono. He's become something of a punchline for no reason.
@cyborghana I meant to praise the words of cyborghana, not CarlyBC. I don't know exactly what it is that gets people criticizing Bono; I guess some folks can't stand it whenever a guy is willing to get right out there and pop way above the rest of the daisies, emotionally, politically...whatever
@deboyden yeah so true. i learned the other day from watching the view that the monkees were told by their manager to not get involved in the politics of the 60s so not to tarsh their rep.
I agree - this is my favourite U2 song and I was blessed to be at the Melbourne concert (Ratlle & Hum)...It was the first song they played!, I was blown away, it is awesome live - that drum...INTENSE! I would have been happy to leave without seeing the rest of the concert...
I agree - this is my favourite U2 song and I was blessed to be at the Melbourne concert (lovetown tour)...It was the first song they played!, I was blown away, it is awesome live - that drum! I would have been happy to leave without seeing the rest of the concert...
this is my favorite u2 record the live stuff is good but all the studio tracks are great songs. i think this is often looked at as a live record but the studio tracks taken out and put alone would make an all time classic record.
this album is my top 10 albums of all time, it's very underated! everysong is classic, its an 'on the road' type album that I'd never get bored of, people often forget bono used to be amazing before he turned all political, it was also recorded onto tape which is why it sounds so amazing
@btyremanable I love this record too, but can't agree with you about Bono only being amazing before getting "political." What, is he supposed to stay in his box in the corner? The one labeled "pop singer"? Nah. Let artists do whatever they want, in art as well as other realms of life!
@deboyden I haven't stopped him from saying anything, his lyrics are highly politically charged, if you are trying to deny that then why? I am an artist myself so why would I want to put him in a box? surely if 'freedom' exsists then I have to right to critisize your beloved bono, is bono even a real person or an alter ego?
@btyremanable I'm truly sorry I annoyed you. Actually, we agree on a lot of things: we're both artists, we appreciate music, and we both think highly of "Rattle and Hum." And, we probably wouldn't mind going back to ANALOG if we could! As for Bono, I'll admit he was musically better back in the mid 80's; the SPIRIT seemed to flow through him more freely then, esp vocally. Still, I've loved hearing U2 (as a whole) go through all it's changes these past 20 years. Truly, Bono needs U2!
I used this song for a similie project in english class, but no one (not even the teacher!) knew who U2 was, or what song this is (yah, all the other kids picked stupid pop and rap songs) -___-
Anyway, they let me play it in class cause they didn't know what I was talking about, and now everyone's got it on their Ipods! :D
I don't know if it is the only time they've played the song live, but it was the opening song for the set they played in Melbourne during the Lovetown tour. We had elevated seats behind the stage (not so great, but who cares..) and I remember Larry smacking the crap out of these black hexagonal futuristic looking drums (perfect view!!). Gave a more muffled sound I think.
Simpler shows then than the grand extravaganzas these days, but they were exhilarating and I adored them back then.
The words, the intense spirit... there is ecstacy in this song, the music is like a fire burning deep inside... something that *must* be sated. The buildup of the chant, increasing in strength towards the climax, is immense in its power and is completely timeless, found in the oldest tribal cultures.
Awesome song, actually this was 1 of those songs that help me become a U2 fan,I guess ,I didn't like for a longf time, because I wasn't looking hard enough to find some of the good stuff,Hence why I tho. why one and vertigo were overated, but they aren't,just 2 good songs from a great Irish bands. Why is it so underated, that's a good question.
Seriously underplayed & underrated song... pure pure rawness & emotion... I especially love the crescendo at the end with the female gospel choir & the throat wrenching vocals from Bono... he meant that sheeeet ;o) Top upload - thanks !
So underrated, but so awesome. Would love to see them revisit this tune on a tour in the future. I believe the only time they ever played this live was in Australia during the Lovetown tour.
@forlife61 I don't think they really have it in them to ever do this the same again. They're too jaded now. This was a thing of youthful spirit and inspiration that I don't think they'll ever be able to recall. Because it's not just the words and the music, but the soul, the love of life that you put into it.
I'm thankful though, that so many of us got to share in this passion.
Naive and premature assessment by you MF, 'Original of the Species' recorded more than 20 years after Hawkmoon, could be Hawkmoon part 2, and like most species if they are to survive...one that has evolved into someting better than the original of the species.
@Kenmorfdublin Well here's my observation. ATYCLB is, for the most part, a pile of shit, and as far as I am concerned you are easily fooled into believing that because a band was *once* good, that it is *still* good.
Bear in mind, I'm not insulting you here, because all I'm implying is that you're naive, and that your words were poorly considered.
@MediaFilter as far as you're concerned...? Who are you to tell someone else they are being "fooled" into believing a band is great? A LOT of people love ATYCLB...it's all subjective.
Just because a band isn't making the same music they were making 20-30 years ago doesn't mean they went from good to "a pile of shit." They're the biggest band in the world...partly because they've continually changed their sound over the years...they make the kind of music they want, not what you want to hear.
@Kenmorfdublin I concur. It's inspiring for a middle aged guy like me to hear the middle aged guys of U2 continue to chart new territory, and to keep connecting with the Source that got 'em started in the first place. For me, "All Because of You," "Miracle Drug," "Magnificent," "Moment of Surrender," "Breathe" etc see Bono and the boys "back in the place they started out from" but with a few new twists and a bit more maturity. Wonderful thing to behold. Now, how to apply this to our own lives?
@MediaFilter Well said. You've crystallized in a few words what I've been thinking since ~'91: I admire (and even groove to) a lot of the work they've done since then, but wonder what happened to the "transcendent" feel that infused the War--Rattle & Hum records. Maybe living life on this ball of rock beats it out of a man after a while. But hey, that's growing up, that's real life. Just let's not get stuck there. And I think the last 10 years is all about U2 getting UNSTUCK, thank God!
@deboyden I'd say yeah, the demands of that industry beat the life out of a lot of musicians after their early years. Living the fast paced life they do, I don't think that's strange at all. Those with no time to themselves are going to have hard time staying centred, spiritually and creatively. There are countless examples.
You're right... i used to get taken by my parents to this godawful naturist campsite in Norfolk and i had to listen to this album alone in my tent to get me through it! This was my favourite track and reminds me of dark forests, weird sounds and weird people, and a lovely person called Jeremy, who was blessedly normal.
