I think this is possibly the best scene in the history of television. The emotion, the symbolism, the suspense and mystery, and of course the music. It's really perfection.
@onrubywings LOST does own the best scene in television history but it isn't this scene. The last scene last from the Walkabout episode revealing John Locke's disability was an absolute masterpiece. This scene may be the best season finale.
@Lakekepler The smoke monster was there from the very beginning. Unfortunately, LOST is the two combined - not the two apart. And almost all of season one's character stories were triggered by supernatural phenomena.
I do understand what your point is. I don't agree, based on my own tastes, but I do understand.
@Lakekepler But you were alright with the fantasy aspects of the first season?
I love LOST but I consider its debut season to be somewhat overrated. It's good, for sure, however the episodes everyone remembers appear between quite poor episodes, making the majority of the first season quite uneven. It's not until the last third that the quality is maintained.
@Damon242 I COMPLETELY disagree. I think the first season is completely solid across the board. It's almost unfair because there wasn't really anything to go wrong, it was just all the presentation of mysteries, and no answers to be dissatisfied with. I would argue that the worst episode in season one, regardless of what you think it is, is better than an average episode from any of the later seasons.
@onrubywings "I would argue that the worst episode in season one, regardless of what you think it is, is better than an average episode from any of the later seasons."
Good luck in arguing that 'Hearts and Minds' is better than 'Through the Looking Glass', or 'The Constant'.
Everything else you said is redundant, as it's opinion. And what would be the point in arguing against that?
@Damon242 Are you implying that Through the Looking Glass and The Constant are average episodes? Because I would argue that they are in the top five of the series, and certainly the best of their respective seasons.
@onrubywings Then exactly what is an average episode? Because you consider 'The Constant' to not be an average episode, I guess that rules out it meaning independent episodes. Vice-versa with 'Through the Looking Glass'.
So exactly what do you mean by 'an average episode'?
@onrubywings while weere talking about opinions of best moments. I would venture to say that the opening of "a tale of two cities" is by far the best scene of the entire show. It was a true game changer...in a good way.
@Mikalh27 Walt. No, he's no he didn't die, he has some kind of powers they never realy extended on after the first 2 seasons and he's in the 12 minute DVD epilouge with two more people we know, which implies the reason for them and his purpose.
@joecaponejoe2 The point was that everything he believed about himself was a lie. He was always a pawn. First it was because he believed his father loved him. Then it was because his legs were healed. And then it was because he thought he was meant to lead the Others. But he never was, and his desire for a greater purpose ultimately led to him being killed in a crappy motel room by Ben.
For anyone watching this who's never seen Lost ---- there are an abundance of scenes at this high caliber. Go watch the show and be rewarded. Between the writing, acting, music, scenery, etc... you can't go wrong.
omg, this so awesome, I can't describe... I wish I could delete everything I knew about Lost so I can rewatch it with the same emotions I did the first time I saw it.
Firstly, props for uploading in this in nice quality. Second, this scene is just so damn good. Season 1 was one of the greatest seasons of Lost and I think the show is the best on television. It's a damn shame it's ending, but once it does I'll have major withdrawal symptoms.
Though, I do look forward to watching all the seasons again on DVD. 6 years of pure brilliance.
I still remember seeing this scene for the first time when it aired on television and thinking, "This show is something special and unlike anything I've ever seen." Can't believe it's all going to be over in two months.
i think they shouldn't of showed dis at the end of season 1..they should of showed it at the very last episode..and cut to black..you will look at that scene and say..my god..what they are about 2 do..
I love this season finale! The opening of the hatch is what set things in motion! I get goosebumps everytime I see the scene where Locke and Jack look down the hole
@EpicEko I always say that people who've never watched this show are so lucky because they can get to watch it for the first time. It was truly special.

@TheLGPCast
This scene represents the start of the journey (being the end of season one it actually is)
For the last scene, they're going to do something like this that represents the ending of the journey.
That would be much more fitting and much better long term, and it would have an actual Ending.
