The source is a mountain spring. As is, the water is clean enough to drink. In this simple village system the spring water flows straight through the pipelines, to the pump, to the delivery pipeline, to the storage tank-- all without filtration and treatment.

Some of the air in the air chamber (the tall pipe) mixes with the water delivered through the delivery pipe, so there is a need to replenish this. That is what this little hole is for. It is called the "snifter hole" and functions to suck in a little amount of air after each burst of a small jet of water. The air thus sucked in eventually enters the air chamber.
