1 Down 5 up you can also go into the up gears and use down to go down a gear. From first it's half a click up to neatrual and you can only get it from first.

If it's your lad's first geared bike don't buy it buy a cheap 110cc off of Ebay or something but to find what the gears are on one of them there's usually a picture of the gear box pattern.
