Sambo in the first place - it is a philosophy of openness to the best and advanced of all the national types of martial arts. Sambo - is constantly increasing, updated, fueled by. This is not an archive, not a compilation of throws and grappling, it is living matter.
I would have to add that of course it depends on the fighter. Technique alone will only get you so far. I think its better to have respect for other disciplines and understand that styles dont win fights, fighters do.
Sambo (cambo) rolls with shit on the ground, especially escaping submissions and pins and not to forget our stand up we dont always need to do single or double leg takedowns like i said we roll with shit there are great sambo players out there just look at Andrei Kopylov, M1 global fighters of russia/ukraine , Oleg taktarov, but I love the rivalry of both Sambo vs Bjj but never count us out dont even say Bjj is the better sport
im not hating but u train wrestling for the takes downs and take down defens bjj for the ground muay thai kick boxing and boxing for the feet sambo trys to include all of this but in a area so borad in my personal opinion i beleive its better off just to train the specifics bjj wrestling and your varios stand up fighting styles and bjj has been proved time and time again i train bjj thats the way i see it i chose bjj after doing research of various martial arts also trained karate/ kickboxing
when a fight goes to the ground which envetibly will happen in 90 % of fight bjj is king u cant even say sambo is better to have on the ground then bjj because its not true it isnt if u look at a sambo competion its like mma punches kicks throws take downs submisions the smabo guy will have an advantage on the feet maybe but not on the ground simple as that much respect to both but if your going to go down the mma route more people train bjj for a reason
BJJ has more elements then Sambo?? haha, yeah right. Sambo have elements of striking , greco wrestling, and Judo techniques, while BJJ only emphasize on ground grappling ( derived from kosen Judo newaza). what make BJJ has more element than Sambo?
Fedor still the best big foot couldn't even catch him the whole time they were on the ground so much for his bjj lol and werdum got lucky because fedor jumped right into his guard
Bjj great but sambos better you can throw people or flip them than choke them out or brake there leg not like bjj you lay on your back and wait for them to come to you it would be great to learn both lol
@qwerty7778 Most Americans can only speak one language, and they can barely speak THAT one. Royler is doing his best with two languages. Cut him some slack.
Fedor is an outlier. Checks the stats, the UFC titles have been held by BJJ black belts over every other style by a mind boggling majority. Sambo is remotely represented. Typically 4 or 5 of the title holders are BJJ black belts at any given time. I love Fedor, and sambo is legit, but in the big picture BJJ is supremely dominant. Its focus on chokes over foot locks is superior.
oh give me a break these gracies are so full of themselves sambo has the same moves plus the the throwing game essentialy bjj copied judo and sambo and wrestling nothing original there so many kiss ass gracie fans its incredible they dont fight anymore simply they get their ass handed to them their myth is debunked this guy and royce cant even give lyoto credit and sambo dosent train with gi ?they older than sambo ? jesus they should just stay quiet at least sambo credit judo the base for bjj
sambo would own jiujitsu.jiujitsu is a bunch of crap on the floor.i would destroy every last jiusitsu guy on earth is thats all he know.u think u can put me on the ground in a street fight.hell no i would kick the shit outta u.
The Gracies fame in MMA is unparallel, no doubt! They brought their style of Jujitsu and it's been effective ever since. But some of them, like Royler and Royce, have this arrogance like GJJ can never be topped or something. In style vs. style matches, no doubt GJJ has proven to be king, but in this era where everyone is well-versed in standup and grappling styles, they can be defeated easily. Jiujitsu is all ground based, but fights start standing. One powerful Sambo throw or Thai knee = KO!
you need to ask yourself which martial art would you want to know if you were in a life threatning situation. i dont think it would be sambo or wrestling or anything else but brazilian jiu jitsu. its an art barely matched bar none.
Why do Brazilian fighters talk as if though they invented and created Jiujitsu? They didn't invent it! they modified something that was already in place for thousands of years.
People need to understand that there is no such thing as "my art is better than yours". There is only 1 ART which is "Martial Arts". All these different disciplines come under the umbrella of MARTIAL ARTS. Under this umbrella there are many different styles such as; Judo, Sambo, BJJ, Karate, Boxing, Aikido, Krav Maga, so on and so forth. Every single discipline has its strong and weak points. In order to eliminate weaknesses you need to combine them and become a Mixed Martial Artist.
There is no an art which can beat another art. There are fighters who can beat another fighters which is totally different, any art can be the best and the most effective but it depends on each person. Both arts are different and both have their weak and strong points.
@JackHammer360 Great point. All fighting styles have pro and cons. Also, guys it depends on the rules of fighting. Would you as a wrestler come to a MMA fight trying to pin someone? Would you as a karate guy go a Judo tournament trying to KO someone with a kick? It's all in what rules apply and focus is depended on. In MMA, all styles that can be effective in knocking out or submitting someone should be used. Not just BJJ, Sambo, Boxing or Thai Boxing. Mix them all to be the best!
i think it just depends on the person i trained in juijitsu and judo but i love basic wrestling and ive beatin alot of good judo and juijitsu guys with it so i think its all up to the person not the style
I agree with you 100 percent, Ive been doing sambo for many years now and have competed against many jiu-jitsu competitors and never lost to a single one... a lot of them ask how I do my techniques, I simply say "Its sambo my friend you should try it.". some day I wish to be like Fedor Emelianenko. Maybe one day I will...
Why is everybody doing the sambo vs bjj debate. It depends on the fighters, not the style. Sakuraba submitted royler and renzo (two of the best gracies ever) and he does catch wrestling. Werdum beat fedor. So bjj wins there. But fedor fucked up nogueira at his own game...it's about the fighters, not the style (I practice bjj, i'm not disrespecting in any way)
Always talking trash, thats how we know the Gracies. None of the compared fighting styles is really older, because their core is based upon century old fighting styles.
Besides, having higher quantity of moves or a longer tradition doesnt necessarily mean the fighting style is better.
@Jaremus yes they are. I had the privilege to train with Royler and not only is he an amazing athlete and instructor, He is great person a proud father and a very humble person. @TheAndrewMan1000 Hell yeah he did. He was given a big dose of humility BJJ style! He actually believed he had little to fear inside Werdum's guard. I thought he would've fought alot smarter than that.
@Mocktezuma111 I looked it up I found it. My apologies. He probably didn't mean that BJJ is ineffective. I do agree BJJ is a more technical style. But sambo and BJJ are 80% the same. Still like Fedor though. I know he doesn't mean to disrespect people or styles.

Fedor out grappled Nog (who was the best submission & BJJ player at the time) like it was nothing. Fedor swept him, took him down, passed his guard, avoided a half of dozen of submissions and basically made Nog & Sobral his bitch. This was back when Fedor was in his prime against BJJ black belts who were in their prime as well. Losing to Werdum is a legit loss but to most experts it was Fedor's mistake which will not happen again.
@Conquistador251 Big Foot out grappled Fedor in Round 2, correct but the fight was lost due to a doctor's stoppage, which is not a clear cut loss... SIlva didn't win by submission, KO or even a decision. His size played a role in this win, not BJJ. Arona... Fedor won the fight, where did Arona's BJJ help him there????? Last, Werdum, clear cut loss by Fedor, no doubt about it but everyone knows it was a fluke... Fedor made a mistake (wont happen again) but still all credit to Werdum.
@Conquistador251 he wasn't robbed. Fedor took down Arona as well, just like Arona took down Fedor. Fedor attempted a few submissions just like Arona did the same. In a pure grappling match, yes, Arona did beat Fedor (grappling wise) but now look at the stats standing up. Fedor landed 3x more punches standing, controlled the pace and was more aggressive and based on those rules, standing and landing punches + being more aggressive wins fights. Grappling back then was not as important as now.
@Mocktezuma111 yeah yeah...thats why he did great against big foot silva and arona..he got battered on the ground....and hey i am a huge fedor fan...i hope he comes back to the top for one last time
@Mocktezuma111 this Fedor again,Hesus!... Fedor just got submitted so just because he had week opponents in the past will never make him great. You put Bruce Lee in a cage with GSP and he will lose fast. MMA has evolved, people are smarter now.. no stile is the "greatest". Yo need a good stand up and ground game.
@davejones8 lol, lol .... a boxer?? you wouldnt stand a chance... come to brazil, and visit my academy, and we will see... I fought some kickboxers and submited them in less than a minute... a boxer?? way less power...
@davejones8 That's actually really funny. I know people who after 4 months of training were submitting most stand up guys. And you would smash most BJJ guys? You get to throw 2-3 punches most. If you don't connect and ko then it's game over for you.
what r u on about? are you on prescription medication? people have been 'grappling' since the verb to grapple existed, and probably before. the greeks, the chinese, the mongolians, the nordic tribes etc. animals grapple for christ sake! I was talking about submission grappling competition, in which BJJ tends to dominate.
You're right every nation has a form of grappling and striking. What I meant was many of it didn't evolve(like British Cornish wrestling that's like Judo and back hold wrestling that looks like Greco Roman.) If you look at the Pankration and Catch wrestling you will see that the submissions are very similar to Jujitsu/Judo(like the double wristlock/Ude Garami).
lol he thinks bjj is gonna beat sambo cause ther is more technique.
ther is actualy striking elements from kickboxing in sambo. their wrestling abillities are outstanding too.
damn man the gracies rly think theyre the best and that bjj beats all.
apart from that they didnt even invent anything. all techniques ther are in bjj already existed in judo and japanese jiu jitsu. they just simplified it to ground submission fighting.
bro how many sambo guys make it to adcc? not many, second the gracies dont think their the best, they believe in their jiu jitsu and think jiu jitsu is the best, most efficient way of fighting which it is, and their strategy, and the moves they added and modified is really amazing..so instead of talking shit, how about you appreciate what they have done..what have you done with your life again?
bjj is not the best martial art, such thing doesnt exist. a judoka will gladly throw a bjj fighter on the street. in the ringit dont matter, but on the street u cant be thrown like judokas can throw u. u will be in hospital, they are very brutal on concrete
im doing mma, so i know about martial arts okay
the gracies are dishonest fighters, they are a lie and they overestimate themselves.
i think thatthe gracies are fucking cocky, about something they havent even accomplished.
they are excellent grapplers...but they have not invented it.
80% of their subs existed in judo before in bjj. they took judo and purified it to ne waza, groundfighting.
they were good at marketing their style, but in reality those submissins existed way before they even lived...and people think its all invented completly by the gracie. they take credit they dont deserve...thats why i hate
@CarlitoJohnson There's no question that the submmissions were around before the Gracie's. To think otherwise is silly. I am fortunate enough to be in an excellent gym that excels in jiu jitsu, and has a class in judo. Forgive me if I am somewhat ignorant in judo. Ne waza, i believe is the sector in judo reserved for ground fighting right? What I believe made these submissions so much more effective for the Gracie's was the concept of positioning and its focus after the takedown.
@EdgeOfTheWorld The reason you don't see a lot of Sambo guys at ADCC is because ADCC shared it's roots & point system with IBJJF. So naturally, a BJJ player feels "at home" at ADCC. ADCC is nothing more than a world championship for BJJ type grappling. The same question can be raised this way: How many BJJ players have you seen win a Greco-Roman World Championship? Or Judo World Championship? Or Sambo World Championship? Or Freestyle World Championships? As a BJJ player, you can enter other arts
@EdgeOfTheWorld bas rutten wasn't asking about which is a better art for submission grappling tournaments, bas rutten was asking which style was a better style for mma.
@EdgeOfTheWorld yeah but sambo adds punches and strikes, that's why you dont see them in ADCC, plus RUssians practice their art in their country, they dont care about abu dabhi
Royler didnt understand the first question.

Sambo is a very tuff martial art... But check the quarter finals or just the fighters who qualified for ADCC. BJJ and wrestlers!

good lad! its true that bjj is the best for submission grappling. how many sambo guys have won adcc for example?

what r u on about? are you on prescription medication? people have been 'grappling' since the verb to grapple existed, and probably before. the greeks, the chinese, the mongolians, the nordic tribes etc. animals grapple for christ sake!

@CarlitoJohnson
bro how many sambo guys make it to adcc? not many, second the gracies dont think their the best, they believe in their jiu jitsu and think jiu jitsu is the best, most efficient way of fighting which it is, and their strategy, and the moves they added and modified is really amazing..so instead of talking shit, how about you appreciate what they have done..what have you done with your life again?
EdgeOfTheWorld 2 years ago 25
95% of bjj techniques were already there
bjj is not the best martial art, such thing doesnt exist. a judoka will gladly throw a bjj fighter on the street. in the ringit dont matter, but on the street u cant be thrown like judokas can throw u. u will be in hospital, they are very brutal on concrete
im doing mma, so i know about martial arts okay
the gracies are dishonest fighters, they are a lie and they overestimate themselves.

Judo,Sambo and catch wrestling are the best.

@CarlitoJohnson That sounds like some mad hatin brah.

@jyakin hmm...
i think thatthe gracies are fucking cocky, about something they havent even accomplished.
they are excellent grapplers...but they have not invented it.
80% of their subs existed in judo before in bjj. they took judo and purified it to ne waza, groundfighting.
they were good at marketing their style, but in reality those submissins existed way before they even lived...and people think its all invented completly by the gracie. they take credit they dont deserve...thats why i hate
CarlitoJohnson 1 year ago
@CarlitoJohnson There's no question that the submmissions were around before the Gracie's. To think otherwise is silly. I am fortunate enough to be in an excellent gym that excels in jiu jitsu, and has a class in judo. Forgive me if I am somewhat ignorant in judo. Ne waza, i believe is the sector in judo reserved for ground fighting right? What I believe made these submissions so much more effective for the Gracie's was the concept of positioning and its focus after the takedown.

@CarlitoJohnson they may have existed for millenia, but we all weren't rolling b4 the gracies.
show sum fuckin respect

@EdgeOfTheWorld The reason you don't see a lot of Sambo guys at ADCC is because ADCC shared it's roots & point system with IBJJF. So naturally, a BJJ player feels "at home" at ADCC. ADCC is nothing more than a world championship for BJJ type grappling. The same question can be raised this way: How many BJJ players have you seen win a Greco-Roman World Championship? Or Judo World Championship? Or Sambo World Championship? Or Freestyle World Championships? As a BJJ player, you can enter other arts

@EdgeOfTheWorld bas rutten wasn't asking about which is a better art for submission grappling tournaments, bas rutten was asking which style was a better style for mma.
luchador1764 7 months ago
@EdgeOfTheWorld adcc? dont what that means, but i do know the last emporer of mma, and hes russian sambo.
avreeves 6 months ago
@EdgeOfTheWorld yeah but sambo adds punches and strikes, that's why you dont see them in ADCC, plus RUssians practice their art in their country, they dont care about abu dabhi
