I read many times Elvis was an 8th degree black belt. Whatever that means.
My philosophy is that if you come around looking for trouble and I can't tear you a new one with my fists, (which I am very, very good with) then I'll shoot your ass. End of story.
Elvis was and forever will be the greatest entertainer in history.
@cuthachXaingeal I've been hearing the words "sloppy" and "muck" coming from Ireland in particular the past few days and I must say - it's laughable. That said - your idea for a video on celebrity Karate is brilliant. I don't think it's been done, certainly not a professional one for sale. Check out this site for more information Elvis Presley was deserving of his certs.
I am 62 years old. I currently a uechi ryu shodan. Working toward nidan.I liked Elvis. He was it. That being said his martial arts skills do not appear to be at an 8th dan level. The kata that I have watched is sloppy. Sorry.
ameriwatr - Elvis' commitment to the discipline was geared toward the thing he knew best. Stage performance. In that, Elvis made Karate popular in America. He earned his reputation (and belt) in part by making untold millions aware of Karate before it was vogue. That's why the video is called "Karate on Stage" and not "Karate in the Dojo".
@ameriwatr Well, Ed Parker said Elvis was "A Good Black Belt" not making any excuses for Elvis but his stage suites weighed around 30 pounds accorrding the Guy who actually made them,he,and others who held them, including maids at the Hilton Holtel in Vegas, said it was all you could do to actually pick the the things up..so it's a wonder how he could move at all in those things...
this was when it got a bit pants for me . sorry. but karate or kata as hes trying to demonstrate here is better left in the dojo. lets face it hes a bit sloppy for a 8th degree black belt
@colvis5 He is sloppy - isn't he? i don't think he is an 8th. I see all his certs from rhee are marked honorary. These karate ones are probably the same.
Elvis studied the discipline known as KEMPO. It was a variation of karate that relied on hand speed and quick reflexes. Use YouTube to find Kempo demonstrations and you'll see that many of the moves are similar to what Elvis used on stage.
@Geruiteindhoven - Elvis would have been the first one to admit he was not a "great Karate master." But he was devoted to the discipline more than any superstar actor or singer of the period. In fact, I'm sure you'll agree that E, more than anybody including Bruce Lee, was instrumental in making martial arts so popular in America. In this sense, he deserved to be called sensei.
@elvisworldwide: I agree with your answer. For me has Elvis the fitness and ability of a Blue belt and the knowledge of a black belt........, and the discipline of a 3th degree black belt.
Elvis studied the discipline known as KEMPO. It was a variation of karate that relied on hand speed and quick reflexes. Use YouTube to find Kempo demonstrations and you'll see that many of the moves are similar to what Elvis used on stage.
@elvisworldwide 8th degree?...well if i was 8th degree i would do karate moves even in family reunions and public places lol...elvis is the king so he can do whatever he want anyways...just kinda surprised i never see him dong that
The only thing that was ever embarrassing about ELVIS is that everybody in the 70's copied him. His performance, dress music;DID EVER ATTEND A CONCERT? All the POP groups on T.V. almond family hour, tom jones, jackson five,sonny/cher all of you're producers and managers and agents..My familey and his on my mothers side were first cousins, so what I don't care if you believe me or not!His mother and my grandmother were cousins on the Smith side..NO, NO embarrassment fatsvernon below comment IDIOT
Almost as embarrassing as allowing intellectually vapid individuals such as yourself to expose deep-seated hatreds. Just know that Elvis would have commented on your best facets. A matter of parenting, I guess.
Oh brother. Relax man. I LOVE Elvis in the younger years. But I just call 'em as I see 'em, and in the later years, in my OPINION, he is embarrassing. If every time some is critical of Elvis you want to chalk that up to bad parenting, feel free. Thank ya, thank ya ver' much.
elvis didnt need pyrotechnics, special effects, computerized music, dancers or choriographers to entertain.he was a show all his own.entertained with his voice ,moves and his great band and backup singers.todays artists would be lost without a computer or special effects.elvis is the greatest
all i can say elvis never lip synced never faked anything not his karate not his belts you can say what you like ioport but hunderds of elvis fans cant be wrong son :D
I always look forward to getting comments from name-callers. You found yourself a forum where you can pass judgement and stay hidden. Probably you think of yourself as a valuable addition to humanity.
Yeah, passing judgement on a long-dead celebrity who was lonely and miserable up until the very end. Glad I can hide behind my computer screen while I say that! If you don't like my comment, then remove it. Know how culty some of you guys can get.
Your comment: "What a hillbilly moron this sad sack was."
You are a hateful person. And no, I will not remove your comment. I want anyone who reads these boards to know the depth of your hatred and shallowness of your intellect.
Sorry guys, I know every elvis fanboy is going to crucify me but I've got to say this man is incredible!! this is the greatest thing I've seen on stage!!! the guy missed even the most minuscule sign of ridicule or self awareness!!! F***ing AWESOME!!!
I'm just rolling on the floor laughing my ass off!!! can't stop watching!!!! :-)
You joined in '06 and this is your one favorite? High praise indeed for Elvis. As for self-awareness - Elvis was aware of every second of his performance.
Your comment on Elvis the performer is welcome - but the "fanboy" verbiage is unwelcome behavior.
We don't deny that Elvis was addicted to prescription drugs. Just as you don't deny that you are a hatemonger. But for some reason, perhaps your upbringing, perhaps because of some sickness in yourself that you are not yet aware of - you have dedicated yourself to hating a man who would have helped you if you needed it.
Whom do you think you are helping? What wrong are you trying to right?
So What! I like amphetamines too. I also like Valium. I'm in good company. And so what if Elvis did them both. He's still the most electrifying god-like entertainer of the 20th century and nobody's like yourself will never take that away from him. Once more he was also a kind caring human being who never forgot his meager beginnings or his fans. Take your trash elsewhere strungout!
Karate or not, Elvis had the best moves I have ever seen or will ever see.

Awesome and masterful incorporation of TaeKwondo and Kenpo
along with some signature Elvis moves. The"Katas" performed
brilliantly unique! I trained at Parkers in Pasadena in the 70s
and when asked about Elvis' proficiency he stated "His interpretation
and skills are excellent, you wouldn't want to mess with him"...
