@Theadrianos80 it's called seeing with your imagination. I was also phrasing an old baseball song I forget who it's by, but it's called "I saw it on the radio"
1 fluke championship in 56 years..Big deal..I will say this though they had great announcers back in the 60's with Hodges and Simmons and the announcers they have today are garbage especially the minor league duo of Kuiper and homer Krukow. Absolutlely horrible.
hahha fluke championship? no such thing. you can win a game on a fluke, maybe an entire roadtrip. but winning your division with 92 games is no fluke. beating an allstar lineup and a rotation filled with cy young pitchers is no fluke(phillies). beating the best team in AL IN 5 GAMES is no fluke. facing cliff lee twice and beating him is no fluke. if u could win a championship on a fluke, dodgers would have done it at least once in the last 20 years. get over it. 2010 champs.
@joraider08 If you don't like Kruk and Kuip, do you mind if I ask what announcing crew you do prefer? Because I've never heard a better play-by-play and color combo.
@ArentWeSpecial They're homers.and as far as who I prefer I would probably say Scully because he works right down the middle and doesn't show favortism to the home team on the air. 90% of the announcers for teams today are homers and not just in baseball. But I guess owners pressure them to be that way..Sad.
@joraider08 I'm sorry, can you explain what you mean by "homers"? I've heard that word used before, but I don't really understand what is meant by it.
@ArentWeSpecial Homer.Home team broadcaster that shows his favoritism towards the home team during a broadcast. The biggest one of all in my opinion is Ken "The Hawk" Harrelson who does the White Sox Games who actually openly roots for his team on the air. It is kind of entertaining.
@joraider08 They are being paid by the organization to do their job. Of course they're homers, unless they are on network ESPN or Fox or MLB then they are paid to root for the home team.
great announcing, i can picture the whole thing. the early giants had some mean sob's on their team and they had chips on their shoulders, marichal, alou, and cepeda didn't like alvin dark's racist attitude, dark had banned speaking spanish. the giants were one of the most integrated teams and it was a problem for pre-civil rights racist america. i would not have wanted to piss this bunch off. lol, my racist father hated cepeda. i became a huge fan of those great giant teams.
Imagine the gall of Chacon hitting the great Willie Mays...keep in mind that this is the Met team that set the all-time record for futility....the Mets went 42-120 in 1962, the first year of their existence. The outcome of this little dispute is exactly what you'd expect it would be...Mays picked up Chacon and threw him into center field. Damn...I love the way they played and fought in the 60's.
@BartA22 They were 40-120 — had a couple of rainouts that didn't get made up, because when you finish 60 1/2 games out of first, why bother?
They weren't the worst team in history, though. That honor goes to the 1916 Philadelphia A's, who were 36-117 (.235). From June 3 through Aug. 8, they went 4-57, losing the last 20 in that streak. Two of their pitchers, Jack Nabors and Tom "Clancy" Sheehan (later a Giants' coach), won one game each and combined for 36 losses.
@OeditpusRex You know your baseball history...4 and 57 must have made it very tough to come to the ballpark every day. As far as the '62 Mets are concerned...let's just say that it's a safe bet that they're the worst team in the last 75 years.
@BartA22 Or since the 162-game schedule. After all, they do hold the record for most losses in a season.
Well, I just found out I'm wrong. The Cleveland Spiders, who started in the American Association in 1887 and moved to the National League in 1889, were 20-134 (.130) in 1899, the last year of their existence. (It's not really accurate, though, to count anything before 1904 as "official," since that's when the 154-game schedule was established.)
This tape is so cool...as it happens I had just read an account of this brawl in a bio of Mays from 1963....love how Russ Hodges rates this as a great baseball brawl "with a lot of punches landing".
Back in the day, every Giant took offense to one of them being jumped, ganged up on, They were a tough group of players, especially the Latin players, Severe Loyalty to their team and teammates.
This same spirit carries on to this day. Go Giants! Gotta Love Them Giants!
Thank you for posting this!!! I was actually at this game in Candlestick Park in 1962. I was 13 years old at the time. It was a double header. Willie Mays, Orlando Cepeda, Juan Marichal, Willie McCovey. The brawl at second base was epic. Both dugouts emptied onto the field and players were piled 3 and 4 deep. Fists were flying and connecting and even bats being swung. It was something that was talked about for years. I almost can't believe this is online. It was almost 50 years ago. Wow!
lol this was great thanks for the posting. lon simmons and russ hodges painted a perfect picture. the slide show helped alot. but wow i wish i could see video of this fight.

In our PC Wussy society today, you never hear a broadcaster describe a bench clearning brawl anymore and get excited about it.
