You aren't blocking that well and you should play in third person while in combat(unless you are shooting arrows) because in first person you'll fail many times as we saw in this vid.

Mods..there are plenty of them...you wants mods for warband or for vanilla?

hire people from w/e faction and when you can get mercenaries, for what faction to join well personally i just started raiding swadian caravans and at some point they'd let me besiege their castle, you can guess what happened after >;D when you install a mod you have to start a new game if i remember right...
