When this happens, the hot air sometimes starts to rotate and expand into a vortex. Eventually it becomes strong enough to pick up dust particles around it, giving it a tornado-like appearance. Unlike tornadoes, Dust Devils form off of the ground and they usually are harmless. It's possible for one to become strong enough to cause damage, but it's pretty rare.

I never saw one really.. Maybe small ones that didn't last long. Then I went up north into the next state area. Saw one and thought it was a tornado forming. My friend just laughed at me. Haven't seen one until the other day. It was pretty decent size. Not this size though. Seems more and more of them are being videotaped. I'm guessing because we're moving deeper into areas where they form. And that everyone has a video camera on them most of the time. Phone or otherwise.
