I think Dominican Spanish is the most expressive there is. And you'll be taught proper Spanish, probably very well. Instead of proper and improper, what should be distinguished here is formal and informal. Dominicans tend to keep it colloquial. Even the big-word-tossing intellectuals. Trust me, there will always be people who will criticise you on how you speak, even if you are speaking with your native accent, even if they are from the same country (just a different part of it). Just like "Yankee" English and "British" English. In Aus, people from SA (State) and NSW (State) speak with different accents. Each one thinking they're superior to the other. Don't listen to the hating, just keep doing what you do.

Dominican spanish is BEAUTIFUL!!! Mi novio es Dominicano. Su accento es tan bonito! Estudio espanol en la universidad pero es espanol mexicano y ahora no me gusta. Me gusta mas el espanol dominicano. Don't go there to study unless it is through a university in the States or just for a hobby. The US does not reconize degrees earned in other countries. But YES. Go there!!! Here is an example given to my class by my Spanish teacher back in DR in 1986; I still remember it! My teacher was telling us how important the letter "S" is. Try to pronounce this Spanish phrase as fast as you can.
Correct spelling with "S":
"Todos los dias vemos las mismas moscas y los mismos mosquitos."
Incorrect spelling without "S":
"To' lo dia' vemo' la' MIJ'ma moca y lo miJmo moquito".
Women would use the correct phase, but men would choose the incorrect. MACHISMO!!!!

Our Spanish is the same as the Spanish spoken in Spain; the fact of the matter is that "DOMINICAN MEN" are afraid to be perceived as delicate because the Spanish language has some sort of "musical tone" is the letter "S" is pronounced all the time.

Im dominican and I think that different countries have different accents and different ways of talking. Some people may say that we dont talk right because they arent use to our accents and the way we talk and they decide to be judgemental and rude because they are probably close-minded and think that people have to talk like them in order to speak "correct". Same applies with dominicans.

Ask anyone who's not Dominican and they'll tell you their spanish is GARBAGE. South American spanish is the purest form, Colombia's for example is nice and understandable.

I find thier accent and slang hard to understand. But i enjoy thier food and culture in general. Im also looking for somewhere to take spanish as well, i was thinking costa rica because its so beautiful!!

Ask anyone who's not Dominican and they'll tell you their spanish is GARBAGE. South American spanish is the purest form, Colombia's for example is nice and understandable.

@clipse375 ALOT of my south AMERICAN fiends would agree with you. South Americans speak and write spanish properly because there country enforces more reading.

I am dominican and italian... and lemme tell ya.. we slang alot.. there are slight diffrences... but dominican spanish isnt horrible.. I like our accent its unique.... If you want to go to the dominican republic plz go.. its beautiful... I have a friend that is costa rican... I have also visited there.. its a beauty as well.... But I still enjoy being in DR more... good luck...

lol! call my old -fashion pero me gusta castilian de espana pero me gusta la cultura de los domincanos. los espanoles tienen lo mejor y en america sud columbia y peru es bueno tambien.
