very possibly this is the actual reason of using the old gentleman in differenet scenes. Good catch from you! and of course you're right - perhaps the mafia life is shown in a slightly too romantic way, but why not? The movie industry hitherto only portrayed mafia as breed of soulless and even mindless murderes. So the time had indeed come to show the upside of the mob people also. After all, nothing is shown unrealistically sweet and nice in any of the Godfather's heroes' lives, right?
Here's what the old man sings in English: Mama dear come over here N see who's looking by my window, It's the baker boy N oh he's got some bread in his hand, He begins to bake his bread, In this room, In that room, Pretty soon my bun is in the oven. N when my bun begins to grow it messes up my figure! LMFAO My Uncle's fluent in Italian N translated it...
@mrbeanchann This is not Stracci. First - Stracci is not that old, as we could see in the movie. Second - Stracci was not shown present at that wedding at all, unlike Barzini. And thirdly - most importantly! - even if Stracci was there, he wouldn't have been entertaining guests with funny songs. It's a different society, my friend, and heads of the most powerful families don't behave public like clown. Could you imagine Don Vito, or even young Michael doing this?
@BlackCrowNavajo You're right it's not Stracci. But Stracci was at the wedding. He is at the same table as Barzini, just not focused on. Secondly the old man singing was at the meeting with all the Dons after Sonny's death. But he gets a blink and you'll miss it shot. So he may not be a Don, but he is someone connected with the Five Families.
@Smiler93 most definitely he's connected with at least one of the families. As they all came from a relatively small ethnic group - Sicilians - matrimonial interconnections between the families were extensive. The old man could easily be a father of a Corleone-family girl who's married with a boy from the Barzinis, thus representing both sides.Strictly speaking, I'm sure all 5 heads of families were somehow related to each other, even though remotely. And thanks for telling me about Stracci.
@BlackCrowNavajo he wasnt acting like a clown. It is a sicilian wedding and he was dancing/singing a national song. Don Vito and Michael would not behave like that but not because they couldnt. Its all about personalities. Don Corleone was a humble and serious man, so was his son Michael. Frank Pentangeli for instance was often acting like a clown, just like in GF2 and he was capo regime - representative of Corleone family in NYC. Capo is a high rank too.
@wisedevil05 Agree. The word "clown was indeed a bit too much, but I meant to say that Top Man of the family, no matter if Corleone or Zalucchi, would not entertain people publicly, even at a happy family event. Pentangeli, and even Clemenza, were indeed some sort of "fun guys", through their personalities. Yet indeed had very considerable weight in the family structure. But still, you know, the status of Capo de tutti capi does require sober and stern decorum.
@BlackCrowNavajo the guy who is dancing was attending the meeting of 5 families. The only people allowed for the meeting were the heads of the families or their representative (in case one of the Dons could not attend) as well as their consigliere and/or underbosses and bodyguards.
He is obviously not a bodyguard (according to his age and the fact that he was sitting at the table during the meeting) so he must be a very high ranked person...consigliere or underdon
@wisedevil05 :-) In the depth of the dispute we forget that it's just a movie not a documentary chronicle. I'm sure Coppola simply used one and the same people for multiple scenes, where the role was really minor, and crowd needed to be composed. Really, the movie is so great that makes us talk about it as if genuine events..
@BlackCrowNavajo I think that the real reason behind this old man is bigger than just a scene placeholder. The true purpose of him, fist dancing and then appearing at the commision meeting is romantisizing of mafia. Coppola tried to portrate Mafiozi as not just people who wear expensive suits, smoke cigars and deal with serious business but people who just like all of us can also sing, dance and have fun. Godfather is romantization of the mafia.

I always figured this song was about grotesque sex, especially cause of the old man's movement at 0:46 and the crowd's delightfully shocked reaction. But I can't find translated lyrics for it... I wish I could, it seems like a funny song.
@Wotanraven It's on youtube some italian guy sings it in english I guess someones daughter is asking who she should marry and the mom is saying if you marry the- and they go on and on. it is about sex somewhat.
@Becky123190 the mafia is still around....they just deal more with drugs and mainly sports....they dont kill like they used to...everybody is getting paid so its less enemies...rarely hear about the murders....NFL=Mafia
daughter: c'e' la luna in menzu 'o mari = there is the moon in the might of the see mamma mia, m'aiu a maritari! = my (dear) mom, i wanna married! mother: figghia mia, a cu t'aiu a dari? = my (dear) daughter, to whom i must "give" you? (= my (dear) daughter, who can i select (good enougth for you)?) daughter: matri mia, pensaci tu! = my (dear) mom, it's you problem! (= my (dear) mom, you must think it!)
I'm British but I live in Italy and I know the song is about the daughter marrying a man who always has his "fish" ie his thingy in his hand. It's a bit vulgar but funny!
the woman singing at the beginning looks like every other aunt of mine.
