Barrel is not just "longer" as you said, it is heavier and chrome plated, different gas block, different muzzle, different stock, modified return mechanism, which uses a new type of metal spring guide rod and recoil spring. Hand grip and stock are made out of polymer, instead of wood (stock is also different in shape).

Baisicly, original RPK is derivative of AKM (not AK-47) in 7.62x39mm, while AK-74 is derivative of AK-74 in 5.45x39mm.

The RPK-74 Of course has less recoil because it is heavier and uses a smaller bullet and has better accuracy.

The RPK-74 is the infantry support weapon version of AK74 which uses same bullet as RPK-74.

AK74 has less recoil then AK47 but if you can handle an AK47 correct the recoil wont bother you much.
