@radoa1 First, we only need oil until fusion power can be developed. Second, fools have been predicting that we will run out of oil since the 1920s. The perception is caused by economics. There is no incentive to research to prove more reserves when there are 20 years of reserves already on the books. The reserves sit between 10 and 20 years, and have for 90 years. The US has 500 years of known coal reserves, and the Fischer Tropsch process convert coal to oil, the peak oil concept is useless.

@DonMeaker - hey brains - how much energy do you need to put in to get one litre of oil out?? The world of cheap to get at oil is over and to do anything at all requires energy. So, while oil is still relatively abundant, we must invest as much as we can to develop the energy sources of the future.

@radoa1 First, absent government intervention the market adjusts far more effectively to changes in supply by changes in price. People can quickly adapt using price information to change their behavior. Second, Fusion in a can has been demonstrated by both Purdue and RPI..

I dismiss the "issue" about renewables because when renewables make sense, the govt need not intervene, people will use them from self interest. When the govt promotes renewables, it admits that renewables don't makes sense.

@radoa1 The taxes are paid at many levels. Taxes are levied at the pump, on the pipeline, and at the wellhead. If an oil company makes a profit, they tax that. Tell me, what is this subsidy? The privilege to not pay taxes on business expenses?

Tax breaks, govt grants, the use of publlc universities for research, sudisidies of the use of diesel, and the building of infrastrucutre using public money to solely benefit the fossil fuel industry, and gov policy that locks out other alternatives, all part of monopoly capitalism, just as Marx predicted.
