They were given safe harbor there by the Fundamentalist Islamic Taliban regime. The US demanded that the Taliban turn over Bin Laden. They refused, so the US invaded to destroy Al-Qaeda itself.

The Soviet invaded Afghanistan and wasn't attacked by the Mujaidheen forces.

The Soviets invaded Afghanistan because of an American-funded insurgency that was threatening to topple the democraticaly elected socialist government. There was no way in hell America would've allowed Moscow to fund a Marxist insurgency in Ottawa. They would've had helicopters and tanks rolling around Parliament in days.

Yeah you're right, but Afghan society had much more freedom under socialist rule than the Islamic Monarchy. Women could learn how to read, they were no longer subject to arranged marriage, and weren't forced to wear a burqa. This pissed off the religious fundamentalists that lived in the tribal areas, and they beheaded 15 soviet officers who were helping produce these reforms, thus Afghanistan was invaded.
