Mp3 has such a bad reputation because the first files were really bad. Today's high resolution Mp3s are much better. Nobody (and I mean nobody) will hear the difference between the original recording and a 320kb Mp3 file.
I can tell the difference for sure. I will still listen to a crappy recording if it's by someone like Louis Armstrong or Coleman Hawkins, but only because I have no choice. Fidelity matters because the music matters.
mp3s are sounding more and more like digital mush to me, even 320 kbps. There is no substance to the song, it's like a hologram of sound. I hear DJs playing them in clubs all of the time and I can instantly tell that its an MP3. Add a bunch of digital FX and run it through a crappy software engine and mediocre "soundcard", by the time it comes out of the speakers its not even music anymore. This is why the vibe at most clubs sucks. Its an imitation vibe dancing around imitation sounds.
@erreur I like to think of it as the scene in the movie "the fly" when the guy tries a bit of the meat after teletransportation and he finds it tastes horrible, because it's an imitation, it's the computer's version, not the real thing.
I challenge every audiophile to do the pepsi test on HQ mp3's vs. FLAC. I've heard audiophiles talking about hearing the difference between those, IN THEIR CAR! Never have I encountered more ridiculous, impossible lies than when talking to audiophiles; man, those people are so full of shit it's hilarious. And when you ask 'm anything about timing and harmony they have no idea what you're talking about. Let's go and have a discussion about the color of the sky!
@Waranoa youre crazy man. I can TOTALLY hear the difference. I am so sick of MP3s, high or low quality. I guess people either have ears to hear the difference between hi and lo quality sound and some dont
I hate how most people are to stupid to recognise high quality sound. I mean mp3 players can hold uncompressed audio, but most idiots won't space for billions of songs instead.
personally speaking I am much more into notes, harmony, rhythm and feel - some of my favourite recordings have a terrible recording quality.. but I do not care.. cause I like the ideas in the music..

I personally hate mp3's ever since I started producing lossless tracks. I just can't find the sub bass or brightness on mp3s that lossless has.

Instead of cramming more songs into an ipod, why don't they work on increasing the fidelity?

i upload my songs at 320 kbps ACC with VBR. Tell me if thats good.

Mp3's and AAC may have poor quality but OGG and MPC at high bitrates sound so much better.
