On one live fire in Todendorf in Germany I brought down 3 styrofoam planes in five passes and they told me to get out of the gun while they still had some planes left for the other gunners. We were supposed to get eight passes.

They don't make blanks in 20mm. They were firing upon a towed target.

I too, got my training at Ft. bliss before being stationed in Ft. Hood with 1st Airmobile Cav., then sent to Firebase Fuller in Quang Tri Province near the DMZ.

Toads,our moniker for the towed version, sucked! After a few bursts it was too easy for NVA mortar crews to zero in on you. Seemed like forever to get it hooked-up & moving with mortar rounds droppin' around you.

The self-propelled versions were far better!

I was a Vulcan 20MM vulcan gunner, B/144 ADA. Ft Lewis no way were we shooting live rounds at a 6 million dollar US Air Force Jet during training. We used small motor drivin radio controled planes to shoot at. The M113 was a better setup for the Vulcan than the Towed Vulcan, but the towed were better for Airborn operations

distance radar that ajusts to help the timing from the time it is shot

till it hits. But i had an easier time hiting a target by shooting a burst

and watching the tracer trail and ajust
