@Elamdri - I don't WANT my kids "socialized" - children in public school learn the social dynamics they do in order to thrive in a potentially threatening environment. That's not socializing, that's survival of the fittest. Any healthy HSer would take a look at this video and roll their eyes, because homeschooling isn't about the concern of how to socialize, it's about (among a miriad of other concerns) how to avoid the awful social dynamics that are pervasive in certain educational venues. :)
@sunrayemomi I guess that's fine, but personally I think kids need to learn those "awful social dynamics" if they're going to be successful at life. We live in a world where we have a ultra-competitive job market and we have a recession so jobs are scarce. It's a survival of the fittest world, and if your kids don't realize that then they're going to end up lunch.
@Elamdri Ahh yes, school socialisation such as sitting still with mouth shut for hours on end and then, violent bullying in the school yard. Yep, a real preparation for the real world.
@TheNakedWombat Pretty much. Do you think that you don't have to shut up and listen when you have a job? That you won't have to deal with unruly co-workers or boss? There are just some unpleasant realities about life, and school is probably the best way to give kids an opportunity to adapt and learn how to handle those situations.
Having chores and going to clubs teach the same things. I'm not going to make an "unpleasant reality" the same place as my child's education- their education is too important to put on the sideline as an "unpleasant reality".
Shouldn't education be more important than that?
When I want my kid to learn an unpleasant reality, I'll make them clean the kitty-litter. When I want them to grow a love of learning, I'll homeschool them.
@TheNakedWombat No actually. Most people would go on strike if they worked under the same conditions they have in schools. Schools are only brainwashing camps for political control. They don't teach anything any more but how to do as the government tells you, taught by bullies. Go to school, get beaten, stabbed or shot because that's real life. Twit.
Hey, wait a second, all the kids who I know that were on sports teams in high school turned out to be total drunkards and potheads now that we're in college.
this video is about getting home school kids socialized so they can fit in society. This video doesn't say anything bad or even mention anything about public school kids. Btw if you are talking about your official gpa for a semester (not cumulative) it is 3.666 if you have 6 classes.
i think different children react to different schools, its all about preference. i think public school is really good for being social but lacks in education depending on school.
yea. really depends upon schools. even what program of that school you end up in. i'm considering home schooling tho. just a lot of social BS that i wouldn't want my child to deal with, although the classroom experience is interesting. but then again... social BS is something one deals with their whole life. better to be exposed early?
@PandorasExecutioner Definitely better to expose them earlier on. If your kids learn how to deal with assholes and bullys at an early age, when they become adults and pushy car salesmen, or asshole bosses try to walk all over them... That public school experience will come in handy!
I was essentially forced into a sheltered life. School was a way for me to get away from that. I learned far more in school than at home despite my parent's best efforts and the few no doubt essential life lessons they gave me. I believe it's a case by case decision. But my bias is towards public schooling and the experiences it offers, good and bad. That said I'd do everything I could to take an positive and active role in my kid's life and education. But I guess it's case by case...
@OriginMSD Spoken like a self-centered, ungrateful person who think's too much of their own intellectual ability. Would like to get your parents' viewpoint.
@miazagora My mom suffered from schizophrenia and my dad was mostly at work. I told you, it's case by case. Homeschooling could work out wonderfully for many people, but not for me and for many others as well. I'm very grateful for my dad's best efforts and what my mom was able to do despite her condition.
@miazagora I'm not interested in having an argument either. But when I wrote that comment 10 months ago I was still in my situation, which after seeing therapy I'm beginning to understand was an abusive one because of how my mom was raising me. I got away from it and now I see that homeschoolers feel like they're on the defense. I'm sorry, I understand now. But please understand there are some home lives that simply can't support homeschooling. I agree it has merit, but it's not universal.
@OriginMSD I'm truly sorry about your mom. However, you are no expert in either homeschooling or child development. Not all or even a majority of homeschooling parents are abusive. There are many abused children that go through the system without ever being "helped" and without anyone knowing. There are many "socially awkward" people in government and private schools as well. Your situation is atypical of most people - no matter where they go to school.
Let's see, 4 friends in the state, 2 friends in the other state I lived in until I moved to this one, only place to socialize being a comm college that my siblings go to, so anyone they know hates me, and the rest of them are creepy as fuck (which isn't bad, sadly it's hard to be happy with college students as friends, seeing as they all have freedom to do what they want.)
its more about the kid than the school, public schools all my life, and 3.75 gpa sonnnnnn, just send your kid to a damn private school if you care about education that much
If you were raised in a bubble secluded from the World and had no idea what the outside experience was... Im sure you would say "we're just fine" as well. What you don't experience, you cannot comment on. The2DUDESsweet is right. Sorry to break it to you! Hahaha
Well I guess the reverse arguement can hold true for all you homeschooled kids too... You have experienced an entire upbringing in the public school system, so how can you accurately judge it either? reverse pwned? lol
I was home schooled for about a year when I moved in with my Grandmother between school years. I was in 3rd grade and learning 8th grade math before I started school again.
Looking back on it I would have preferred to stay in home school since I STILL feel that public school is a waste of time. It's supposed to teach you how to sensibly interact with your peers, but that's a load of shit. No one interacts sensibly with anyone else nowadays.
School teaches social skills. If you grow up with your fucking mom all your life, you're screwed. One of my friends cousins is home schooled and he is the weirdest person I have ever met.
@SpartanElite095 You put "SIC" in brackets when you quote from a source that has some sort of error, but it wouldn't be a direct quote if you corrected it. Look it up in the dictionary.
Well if you dont learn how to deal with bullies and assholes as a kid in school... youll get raped when you become an adult and pushy car sales men and mean bosses walk all over you...
@Balgore8 And guess what? You don't no everything.... So I wish you'd "F**K OFF!" Cause your nothing... You never will be, and if you act like this, it just shows you that school didn't help you what so ever! "Go To Hell"
@moonlady3000 Agreed. I'm happy with being homeschooled and the only thing public school has ever given me is a feeling of being more ignored and isolated than I feel now.
I KNOW, RIGHT?! i am currently going to public school (fml) and i saw three fights today. i saw about ten students with their asses sticking out and i was shoved to the ground to many times to count. i will be switching to a private school tho! :] but honestly, i hate my current school. its dumb. i happen to be a very bright student as i am working with the 8th graders. i cant wait to get out of this school. youre sooo right.
Well, for one, this is the internet, and it's not like i'm spelling every word wrong, sorry for not being perfect sir. And i am being sarcastic about religious youth groups, i'm personally Agnostic, and have nothing against Christianity, but i do not believe in forcing it on kids who cannot yet think for themselves.
I'm a self thaught...and we're lucky to be open minded in my family...damn dude..you should investigate someone's profile before convincing yourself with wrong statements....
also...why da hell an occultistpriest has "How To Pick Lingerie That Complements Your Body Type" as favourite video instead ?!?!?!
I was homeschooled from age 7 to 13. I now am a sophomore in a community college, working toward my bio major. My gpa is now 3.9, and I'm doing really good. Oh, and i'm 14. I'm just trying to say that if done correctly, homeschooling can be a very effective way to teach a child. But if done to an extreme, where the parent completely takes the child out of the world, can get out of line.
We aren't arguing that you don't learn anything when homeschooled. We are arguing you become socially retarded and don't develop the real life skills necessary to face people as an adult who will walk all over you... have fun with your high GPA, fancy piece of paper, and nice income when some fraud just cons you out of everything you've spent your life working to earn! haha
Actually I was pretty much socially retarded until about 11. Then I was craving for socialization, so I got my mom to let me join a boyscout troop and a basketball team. As of now, I'm still in the boyscout troop, I play basketball for a high school, and I play ice hockey. So i'm basically a regular kid outside of my academics.
The thing is, many homeschoolers don't crave socialization, so they become, as you say, "socially retarded."
@Balgore8 Have fun working for the guy with the high GPA and "fancy piece of paper". Logic and rhetoric aren't taught in government school. Obviously.
@miazagora obviously you aren't taught logic if you think that no public school students don't also have high GPAs and Diplomas. In fact, I personally have a diploma and literally had a 4.0 GPA all through college. Believe me or not, I dont really care. My point remains true. Regardless of what either side accomplishes or doesn't accomplish, being socially retarded will get home-schoolers no where. Have fun even working at Walmart if you don't know how to talk to people.
@Balgore8 Homeschooling has been around a lot longer than government schools. There are very successful people - entertainers, big business owners, scientists - that were homeschooled. Socially awkward people will not become social butterflies just by putting them in government school - - in fact, quite the opposite is more likely to happen. Homeschoolers are not socially awkward because they're homeschooled. Just like all government-schooled kids aren't bullies or gang members.
@miazagora Just because there are some examples of very successful homeschool people, im sure there are wayyy more examples of very successful government schooled people as well. After all, im sure a large % of society is government schooled, and that a very high 90s% of everyone everwhere in all job environments came from government education systems. I dont know the stats for sure, im just guessing. I would be curious to know though the % of successful Homes vs % successful publics
@OccultistPriest: Wow, if you are talking to me, then I am at a loss for words. I don't see how I could possibly prove everything I just said. Tell you what, believe whatever you would like. I am going to get back to studying for my NCLEX (yes, I am almost an RN). Whatever you do, don't let the possibility of my statements being true haunt you. Don't think about it tonight as you weigh the odds. What I said must be pretty cool for you to disbelieve me, but don't doubt! Hold to your guns!
What if Islam is right and you are wrong? What if the millions and millions of people who believe in the other fiction book are more accurate in their knowledge of a higher being than you? Don't let those thoughts haunt you at night!
Sounds to me like a really shitty public school. Meself, I've never had so much as one of these problems, at mine own.
The only thing that's ever bothered me is the funding that's been cut from the Arts in California. I had to preform in "The Good Doctor" wearing a hand-me-down tweed coat donated from a local church.
Anyways, if you read this, alfkowitz, we get it. You're a grammar Nazi. You support home schooling. And that's great. Just try not to be such a pretentious dick about it. ^^
@OccultistPriest: You just asked a completely unrelated, personal question that I will be happy to answer. Yes, we are Judeo-Christians who strongly believe in both the Old and New Testaments. We believe the Bible when it says we ought to pursue knowledge and virtue. It has been years since I was in a homeschooled environment, but the mentality of being responsible for my own education still fuels me. The last thing I need is being subservient to some dimwit professor.
THERE IT IS!!! I knew upon reading more I would reveal why you sound totally fucking nuts. Because instead of "being subservient to some dimwit professor" you choose to be subservient to a fiction book written by a man 2000 years ago. Grats on being closed minded and brain washed by your parents!
@OccultistPriest: See, now you have a really stupid opinion that I will gladly make fun of. My dad has a genius level IQ, a degree in engineering, and is a retired biomedical engineer. My mother is an RN, and is great at teaching people. But really, even a moderately intelligent child is capable of educating themself by simply reading a book. Do you think I needed someone to hold my hand with cell biology, emergency medicine and languages? At some point everyone becomes homeschooled.
So... You proved our point? Your father was educated by other teachers from the public masses and certainly did not get his fancy piece of engineering paper from his parents.
Interesting conclusion, in the same "interesting" way that Korean missle tests go wrong (booyah). Sure, they are good for a laugh or two, but in the end they keep hitting the wrong target. But I digress. My dad got the bare minimum at public schools, and the rest was on his own initiative. Most of his classmates turned out lame. Also, college is only available to the "public" with enough money, grades, and suck-up factor. Also, his continuing education was at home (homeschooling?).
@OccultistPriest: Well, your spelling and grammar are ok, so now I just have to make fun of your ideas. Do you really expect me to believe that most schools do an adequate job at anything? Sorry, youtube is filled to the brim with public school kids, and this video's comment section is no exception. I was homeschooled for 11 years, and like anything else, it is what you make it to be. I have been on lots of honor rolls, deans lists, speak multpile languages, etc.
@Balgore8: You are stupid and know nothing, so I'll make this as brief as possible. I am married to a beautiful woman, have a daughter, have an honorable discharge from the Marines, am now a Corpsman for ground forces, have a BS in Cell Biology, am an EMT-B, and have lots of friends. I doubt you have anything to bring to the table. If you ask me to prove it I will laugh and give you the same answer that I gave to that idiot OccultistPriest. Away with you, you irritating internet troll!
I need no proof from your pathetic life's 'resume'. For I also was in the army, had an honourable discharge, graduated college on the president's honour roll for highest academic standings having straight A's across the board with a 4.0 grade point average. I have backpacked Europe and many other parts of the world. I have written a book. I have many skills, I am physically fit...
And though I do not yet have a wife and kids, I am in my early 20s and have accomplished all that so far... So dont try to impress me... For at the very least we are equal. And considering im guessing im at least 10 years younger than you... I will probably surpass your great accomplishments by the time I reach your old age. So away with you old man... Don't underestimate your enemies.
@CheapA**MediaProd: allow me to explain this in simple terms for you, since you seem to have trouble with grammar. You are an idiot. I've (the proper rendering for the contraction of "I have") never seen a bigger (randomly selected pejorative noun) than you. Notice how all my sentences begin with a capitalized word? Also, the word "your" is being used in the wrong form. It should be "you're", a contraction of "you are". Don't worry, most simians have trouble with this.
And were you home schooled oh wise one? "I've never seen a bigger than you" doesn't really make sense. And "bigger" being your "randomly selected noun" isn't so random. If you were homeschooled, and if you do believe yourself more knowledgeable than others... I have but one question for you... Are you a virgin who is socially retarded? Or did your social skills develop fully from home with mommy? Just because "cheapA" shoots his mouth off and is rude does not mean his point has no validity.
balgore8, bigger wasn't his randomly selected pejorative noun. Bigger is an adjective. Not a noun. He's leaving a place open to imply that any such randomly selected insulting archetype could easily be used to describe CheapAssMediaProd.
Ah whatever, I scanned his drivel. The second he mentioned "church" and "bible" in his other posts I realized he had nothing logical to add to the discussion.
It denotes lack of logic, reason, knowledge, wisdom, and open-mindedness. If those things combined doesn't equal stupid to you... well I guess I have nothing else to say then! ;)
You are better off being a 30 year old virgin living in your parent's basement having never had real friends your age or experienced a real social life to prepare you for what your adulthood has in store? I think ill take my chances with the public system thank you!
Well obviously out of the billions of people world wide that go to public school, one of them will turn out retarded like you kittchiwolf. My arguement is that the vast MAJORITY become socially skilled.
Socializing? Umm... we are people, not animals thank you very much. I was homeschooled and I turned out to be one of the more popular kids in school. Yes, there are anti-social kids but that happens in any group, public school, private school, home-school.
@mc430ftjesus: ditto here. The only reason that I clicked on this vid was I thought it might be something funny, like socialized medicine. Want kids to be "socialized"? I was in martial arts, soccer, played with neighborhood kids, AWANA, got along great with people of all ages in my church, etc. Thanks to public "education", youtube has plenty of ignorant people like CheapA**mediaProd.
You keep reading that fiction book and tell me how that works out for you in the afterlife when you are reflecting on how much time you squadered worshipping a man-made lie.
Your parents dont have to teach you if you want to be homeschooled. There is online classes you can take. Me and my friend are going to start next year.

this video is about getting home school kids socialized so they can fit in society. This video doesn't say anything bad or even mention anything about public school kids. Btw if you are talking about your official gpa for a semester (not cumulative) it is 3.666 if you have 6 classes.

i think different children react to different schools, its all about preference. i think public school is really good for being social but lacks in education depending on school.
bonifidej 2 years ago 2
yea. really depends upon schools. even what program of that school you end up in. i'm considering home schooling tho. just a lot of social BS that i wouldn't want my child to deal with, although the classroom experience is interesting. but then again... social BS is something one deals with their whole life. better to be exposed early?
PandorasExecutioner 2 years ago
@PandorasExecutioner Definitely better to expose them earlier on. If your kids learn how to deal with assholes and bullys at an early age, when they become adults and pushy car salesmen, or asshole bosses try to walk all over them... That public school experience will come in handy!
Balgore8 2 years ago
I was essentially forced into a sheltered life. School was a way for me to get away from that. I learned far more in school than at home despite my parent's best efforts and the few no doubt essential life lessons they gave me. I believe it's a case by case decision. But my bias is towards public schooling and the experiences it offers, good and bad. That said I'd do everything I could to take an positive and active role in my kid's life and education. But I guess it's case by case...
OriginMSD 2 years ago
@OriginMSD Spoken like a self-centered, ungrateful person who think's too much of their own intellectual ability. Would like to get your parents' viewpoint.
miazagora 1 year ago
@miazagora My mom suffered from schizophrenia and my dad was mostly at work. I told you, it's case by case. Homeschooling could work out wonderfully for many people, but not for me and for many others as well. I'm very grateful for my dad's best efforts and what my mom was able to do despite her condition.
Are there any other questions?
OriginMSD 1 year ago
@miazagora I'm not interested in having an argument either. But when I wrote that comment 10 months ago I was still in my situation, which after seeing therapy I'm beginning to understand was an abusive one because of how my mom was raising me. I got away from it and now I see that homeschoolers feel like they're on the defense. I'm sorry, I understand now. But please understand there are some home lives that simply can't support homeschooling. I agree it has merit, but it's not universal.
OriginMSD 1 year ago
@OriginMSD I'm truly sorry about your mom. However, you are no expert in either homeschooling or child development. Not all or even a majority of homeschooling parents are abusive. There are many abused children that go through the system without ever being "helped" and without anyone knowing. There are many "socially awkward" people in government and private schools as well. Your situation is atypical of most people - no matter where they go to school.

Wow, people are really hating on home schooling.

But if done to an extreme, where the parent completely takes the child out of the world, can get out of line.
bossbower 2 years ago
We aren't arguing that you don't learn anything when homeschooled. We are arguing you become socially retarded and don't develop the real life skills necessary to face people as an adult who will walk all over you... have fun with your high GPA, fancy piece of paper, and nice income when some fraud just cons you out of everything you've spent your life working to earn! haha
Balgore8 2 years ago
Actually I was pretty much socially retarded until about 11. Then I was craving for socialization, so I got my mom to let me join a boyscout troop and a basketball team. As of now, I'm still in the boyscout troop, I play basketball for a high school, and I play ice hockey. So i'm basically a regular kid outside of my academics.
The thing is, many homeschoolers don't crave socialization, so they become, as you say, "socially retarded."

@Balgore8 Have fun working for the guy with the high GPA and "fancy piece of paper". Logic and rhetoric aren't taught in government school. Obviously.
miazagora 1 year ago
@miazagora obviously you aren't taught logic if you think that no public school students don't also have high GPAs and Diplomas. In fact, I personally have a diploma and literally had a 4.0 GPA all through college. Believe me or not, I dont really care. My point remains true. Regardless of what either side accomplishes or doesn't accomplish, being socially retarded will get home-schoolers no where. Have fun even working at Walmart if you don't know how to talk to people.
Balgore8 1 year ago
@Balgore8 Homeschooling has been around a lot longer than government schools. There are very successful people - entertainers, big business owners, scientists - that were homeschooled. Socially awkward people will not become social butterflies just by putting them in government school - - in fact, quite the opposite is more likely to happen. Homeschoolers are not socially awkward because they're homeschooled. Just like all government-schooled kids aren't bullies or gang members.
miazagora 1 year ago 2
@miazagora Just because there are some examples of very successful homeschool people, im sure there are wayyy more examples of very successful government schooled people as well. After all, im sure a large % of society is government schooled, and that a very high 90s% of everyone everwhere in all job environments came from government education systems. I dont know the stats for sure, im just guessing. I would be curious to know though the % of successful Homes vs % successful publics

Public school sucks for these reasons:
by the way I dont think they are dumb or somthing, I just am going to say why homeschool is better.
(1) You can go at your own pace. Your not held back when you could be going forward and your not pushed forward if you need to stay back.
(2) You can sleep late, but you have to work late too.
(3) Your parent's actually care. They want you to pass. So they will try to help you. Unlike public schools that will just fail you.
Sorry but ther is no room.
TheCheetahwings 2 years ago
Sounds to me like a really shitty public school. Meself, I've never had so much as one of these problems, at mine own.
The only thing that's ever bothered me is the funding that's been cut from the Arts in California. I had to preform in "The Good Doctor" wearing a hand-me-down tweed coat donated from a local church.
Anyways, if you read this, alfkowitz, we get it. You're a grammar Nazi. You support home schooling. And that's great. Just try not to be such a pretentious dick about it. ^^
XcaptainXobliviousX 2 years ago
All I have to ask you, who im guessing was homeschooled, is one simple question.... When was your first girlfriend? LOL Homeschooling still better?
Balgore8 2 years ago
@OccultistPriest: You just asked a completely unrelated, personal question that I will be happy to answer. Yes, we are Judeo-Christians who strongly believe in both the Old and New Testaments. We believe the Bible when it says we ought to pursue knowledge and virtue. It has been years since I was in a homeschooled environment, but the mentality of being responsible for my own education still fuels me. The last thing I need is being subservient to some dimwit professor.
alfkowitz 2 years ago
THERE IT IS!!! I knew upon reading more I would reveal why you sound totally fucking nuts. Because instead of "being subservient to some dimwit professor" you choose to be subservient to a fiction book written by a man 2000 years ago. Grats on being closed minded and brain washed by your parents!
Balgore8 2 years ago
@OccultistPriest: See, now you have a really stupid opinion that I will gladly make fun of. My dad has a genius level IQ, a degree in engineering, and is a retired biomedical engineer. My mother is an RN, and is great at teaching people. But really, even a moderately intelligent child is capable of educating themself by simply reading a book. Do you think I needed someone to hold my hand with cell biology, emergency medicine and languages? At some point everyone becomes homeschooled.
alfkowitz 2 years ago
So... You proved our point? Your father was educated by other teachers from the public masses and certainly did not get his fancy piece of engineering paper from his parents.
Balgore8 2 years ago
Interesting conclusion, in the same "interesting" way that Korean missle tests go wrong (booyah). Sure, they are good for a laugh or two, but in the end they keep hitting the wrong target. But I digress. My dad got the bare minimum at public schools, and the rest was on his own initiative. Most of his classmates turned out lame. Also, college is only available to the "public" with enough money, grades, and suck-up factor. Also, his continuing education was at home (homeschooling?).
alfkowitz 2 years ago
@OccultistPriest: Well, your spelling and grammar are ok, so now I just have to make fun of your ideas. Do you really expect me to believe that most schools do an adequate job at anything? Sorry, youtube is filled to the brim with public school kids, and this video's comment section is no exception. I was homeschooled for 11 years, and like anything else, it is what you make it to be. I have been on lots of honor rolls, deans lists, speak multpile languages, etc.

And yet retain your virginity, have no friends, are probably physically useless and weak.... Thus proving all of our points?

I am married to a beautiful woman, have a daughter, have an honorable discharge from the Marines, am now a Corpsman for ground forces, have a BS in Cell Biology, am an EMT-B, and have lots of friends. I doubt you have anything to bring to the table. If you ask me to prove it I will laugh and give you the same answer that I gave to that idiot OccultistPriest. Don't underestimate your enemies.
Balgore8 2 years ago
@CheapA**MediaProd: allow me to explain this in simple terms for you, since you seem to have trouble with grammar. You are an idiot. I've (the proper rendering for the contraction of "I have") never seen a bigger (randomly selected pejorative noun) than you. Notice how all my sentences begin with a capitalized word? Also, the word "your" is being used in the wrong form. It should be "you're", a contraction of "you are". Don't worry, most simians have trouble with this.
alfkowitz 2 years ago
And were you home schooled oh wise one? "I've never seen a bigger than you" doesn't really make sense. And "bigger" being your "randomly selected noun" isn't so random. If you were homeschooled, and if you do believe yourself more knowledgeable than others... I have but one question for you... Are you a virgin who is socially retarded? Or did your social skills develop fully from home with mommy? Just because "cheapA" shoots his mouth off and is rude does not mean his point has no validity.
Balgore8 2 years ago
balgore8, bigger wasn't his randomly selected pejorative noun. Bigger is an adjective. Not a noun. He's leaving a place open to imply that any such randomly selected insulting archetype could easily be used to describe CheapAssMediaProd.
