I get all of those things. flat on top, frizz on the ends, and the frizzing ends, puff up the middle so I look like a mushroom, because I have short hair.

No matter how careful you think you are, back-combing always damages he hair because it rubs the cuticle (protective layer) of the hair upwards and it also makes the hair lose it's shine.
