Now rice has joined wheat and corn in scarcity and high cost. What irritates me is that a couple years ago, the genetically modified food industry got lots of buy-in by saying they will develop food crops to feed the hungry. Where are they now?

Why not do a story asking: "What if the US went vegetarian?"

The amount of water and grain used to feed cows and energy used by the meat industry is tremendous. What if we ate tofu? Or just less meat? How many people could we fee with that grain and water? What about how much beer we drink? What is more important serving big macs EVERYDAY or feeding starving people? How much meat do we even really need?
