Under his supervision, she quickly became a completely diffrerent skater, with grace (which she never had), beautiful lines, and speed. タラソワとモロゾフさんの影響もそうですが、佐野実先生に移った途端、荒川さんは別人のような選手になりました。佐野さんとは、何か相性が良かったんでしょうね。キャラハンさん、佐藤夫妻、長久保さんなど、超一流のコーチが出来なかった事を、佐野さんがやってくれましたね。意外です（失礼か・・・）。

長野五輪以来久しぶりに見た荒川さんは、5年前とは違い、手足が伸びた演技で綺麗になったと感じました。前年ソルトレーク出場の村主選手とともに次回のオリンピック（トリノ）が楽しみだと思った。もっとも、オリンピックの優勝までは想像できませんでしたが・・・・。この大会では、荒川・村主の両選手に続いて、中野由香里さんも３位に入ったのですが、表彰台でのぎこちなさを今でも覚えています。このころから日本のフィギュアスケートが強くなりましたね。
