That quote in the description, it was actually a 17th Century Italian novelist called Letti who invented it, along with some forged letters that were long suppose to be Elizabeth's.
Elizabeth was actually in love with Seymour, or so I've read. She had a little crush on him cause supposedly he was one of the finest men at court. So I wouldn't all together say she was sexually abused, because she did indeed like him.
WTF was wrong with the Seymours? First they helped killing George and Anne Boleyn and then they even sexually abused Anne's child? Fucked up people, really!
what dont get is she such good woman..cared for them why..didnt see belive how bad this guy was..for she hated herny as all she used him..but we all she loved his children..
@MosaicMaiden I would bet on it. She was too young and too sheltered to handle or even fully understand the sexual overtones/seduction from a 40 yr old man who was supposed to be her guardian. Then to have to testify at court and know the man was hanged on her testimony.
She didn't fall for him... and yes, all nobles were ambitious for power and influence. It was a power game and played for the highest stakes. See Henry VIII's reign for the sheer number of ambitious nobles who lost their heads.
This is so untrue. There was no relationship going on between Thomas Seymour and Princess Elizabeth. Thomas married Catherine Parr, the widow of King Henry The VIII
It has been suspected that Thomas Seymour and Elizabeth had something together. A rumour said that Katherine Parr surprised them once kissing or in bed together. Tis is why Katherine sent Elizabeth away.
@melvinhendrikse It wasn't Kat laughing, it was Catherine Parr. I think (emphasis on think xD) that she was laughing because she thought it was all an innocent game.
Yes. I noticed before that there was another actress playing Kat. Yet still it seems quite strange for Catherine to laugh... especially since most woman are quite jealous to begin with.
Well, wasn't she pregant at the time with Thomas' child? Maybe she was laughing because she wanted to keep Thomas with her whatever way possible.. let's face it, the Tudors acted weird sometimes. xD
if i was Elizabeth I sister i would have done everything to protect her and keep her safe in my arms from everyone who tried to do harm to her..then i would have those hanged, drawn, and quartered..and have them remember their alliegiance to Elizabeth I.
Mary should have taken her head off. Elizabeth isn't admirable at all. She went to mass all during Mary's reign just to save her own neck. She was not willing to die for her religion, that's for damn sure. Constantly throwing herself at Mary's feet, sobbing big dramatic tears....give me a break.
No. She was shrewd, tactical and clever. She knew what she was doing and she also knew what she needed to do to survive. Her ambition was to become Queen. Dying for her religion isn't gonna help is it. To do so seems rather stupid really. Elizabeth was thinking and planning the future. Furthermost she ruled with her head and not with her heart.
It's no wonder Elizabeth didn't marry! The prominent male figures in her life were either power mad and heinous (her father and Seymor) or weak and stupid in their ambitions (Dudley). Faced with the horror of choosing a husband who had some or all of those traits, I think I would've been a 'virgin' queen myself...
"Dudley" was not weak and stupid in his ambitions. he had great ambitions though, but he did not pretend to love Elizabeth so he could marry her. He loved her and stood by her side until the day he died so dont you tell me these stupid things you said.
I believe that Dudley was weak and stupid in his ambitions because he did not have enough sense to get out of his own way and often times caused Elizabeth a great deal of personal and professional pain with his actions. As for loving her, I'm sure he did and she loved him as well, but he lacked discipline and common sense, in my opinion and Elizabeth was wise not to make him (or any man) her consort...
Let me add in my comment to Gwyn142 that I do not appreciate my opinions being referred to as stupid. Can people not disagree without throwing around school yard insults like five year olds these days? I have a right to say what I please, within reason, as do you and anyone else. I try to make discussions pleasant, even engaging, so please show me some respect and I will show the same...
I don't really like this portrayal of Catherine Parr- it almost makes it look as if she knew what was going on. I mean, when she laughed as Elizabeth ran away after her gown was cut, it made her look hysterical and involved O__O
yes thomas made elizabeth fall in love with him while he was only after her throne knowing that she might someday rise to power..perhaps elizabeth never married but all the hardships she passed thru made her into the great ruling queen she became later. "I have the heart of a man, not of a woman, and I'm not afraid of anything.." she was to say later
Forty year old married man running down a 14 yr old girl in his own household: too bad they didn't have terms like statutory rape and pedophilia back then.
and being shut up in the tower of london and questioned ruthlessly on the subject of attempting to murder her sister, bloody mary, of course she wasn't doing that..but all those yrs in prison turned her into a very wrathful woman, she is famous for her temper tantrums among other grander and greater things like her intelligence and wit...
She might have had a temper, but she never let it cloud her judgement. She might have sent people who angered her away from court or even the tower for a time in extreme cases, but that was it.
Unlike her father, who had heads cut off right, left, and centre.
Yes, as we all know, the best way to get a girl into bed is to slash her dress into pieces. I use my pen knife whenever I go clubbing. Works every time. :)
Lol. "Little King edward the sixth had stepped into his father's shoes, but they were several sizes too big for him." imagine if he stepped into his father's clothes.
Anne was not a damn witch. She was simply a beautiful and intellegent young woman lusted for by a Lustful King. Her only sin was trusting him in the first place.
Elizabeth was suppose to have been 15. which was consider marrying age. Girls in that era got married as young as 12 (although that was to young) therefore age 15 was the perfect age for courtship.
doesn't make it ok, you perverted fuckface, he was still a filthy predator after a minor child, that's all the context you need. Try using that BS excuse with the police. Just STFU, you weird fuck!
I never said it was ok-where the hell did you get the idea from? I'm just saying this was how things were done then. Its important to understand the context of an action before judging it. and in this case, yes, to ME and YOU it was perverted, yes, it was digusting, and no, I did not indicate otherwise (read the second sentace). but neither I nor you are them, and to say so is stupidity. that is all I pointed out-historical context.
& grow up. using fuck only proves you are a primitive to me.
Thomas Seymore was a creep. He was 30 years old when set out to seduce Elizabeth. He failed with Mary, so he went to the next in line for the throne, Elizabeth. I wonder who's idea it was for Elizabeth to move in with Katherine Parr. Was it Katherine, or Thomas???
dont judge them by our standards-they lived to be 50 if they were lucky-25 was middle age-to be 15 years of age was to be 25 years of age in our times-ie, nothing immoral to them about sleeping with a 15 year old
GRRRR the Seymours make me angry and sick...and I'm not sorry about it.The more I study & read/watch on the subject,I am infuriated at Thomas Seymour and not too fond of Jane for my own laundry list of reasons, but what is with Catherine holding Elizabeth when THomas is cutting her dress up? And why in hell would he cut her dress to pieces??? I mean I know she could get more fabric but that's rediculous and check out the goofy laugh that the Catherine character lets out during that scene!
You can't be too harsh on Jane. She was a pawn in Edward and Thomas' scheme for power, much in the same way Anne and Mary Boleyn were pawns of their family. The real evils are the families themselves. As for the Seymours, Edward was the greater evil of the two brothers.
I don't get Catherine on her stand on this; historian Alison Weir said that sometimes Catherine helped Thomas and his advances toward Elizabeth (holding her down etc) but when she saw them together sometime she banished Elizabeth. What?
@k10edd i think that is one of those things where the mother figure or wife tends to put the blame on the child and not the man. catherine was prob. in denial and wrongly blames elizabeth instead of seymore.
Lady Jane Grey's parents were Frances,Duchess of Suffolk and Henry Grey. Frances was the daughter of mary tudor (sister of henry VIII of england) and charles brandon. Thomas Seymour was the brother of jane seymour (king henry VIII's 3rd wife) and edward seymour. he was also the uncle of king edward VI (son of king henry VIII and queen jane).
apparently she actually did have sex with him sort of rapish cos she is young but she consented and she did fall pregnant an miscarried when she was banished and supposedly ill. it was just a rumour tho. but it is the tudors after all i wouldnt be suprised if it was true!
There is absolutely no evidence that Elizabeth was ever pregnant with Seymour's child. There was a rumour that she was, and Elizabeth was furious at such rumours and even wrote to the Lord Protector asking to be allowed to go to court to show everyone that she was not pregnant. She lacked a confidante to hide a pregnancy. If she had been this would have been reported to the Council.
I know! All of the old english stories totally support what there saying. One remour was anne was a witch. wchich isn't totally impossible knowing everything back then
no it wasnt quite like that they cut her gown as a joke because they both thought she had been in mourning of her father king henry too long. it was still out of order and i hink catherine really wanted to believe it was all innocent.
Poor little girl, im so glad she became the wonderful queen she was, she is an absolute inspiration. I adore her, she overcame a horrible father who killed her mother and a pervert and became such a wonderfuly strong woman. I love her to this day and have done scince i first learned of her. Long live her memory, our queen elizabeth! Englands greatest monarch ! xx
yuck what a pervert he was. cutting her gown like that and coming into her bedchambers. She was just a confused girl of 14 who didn't know what to think of it!! poor elizabeth!
There is no evidence that they slept together. However what he was doing was inappropriate as he would enter her chambers not properly attired and when she was in bed. He was also said to embarrass her by slapping her on the buttocks which was viewed as highly indecent. Starkey argues that today we would see this as child abuse. Even though Elizabeth was of an age to marry by this period, it was still seen as indecent as Seymour was married and she was not (plus she was his wife's ward).
I have always wondered what happened to the Boleyn side of Elizabeths family, i no her mother and uncle george were killed for incest by henry but what about her aunt and her grandfather
She was close to her Carey cousins (Mary Boleyn's children). Her grandfather (Thomas Boleyn) died in 1539 and Mary Boleyn had retired in disgrace following her marriage to William Stafford. It is very likely that she never saw Elizabeth after her marriage.
Hi Lucky,Many people share in your curiosity about the other Boelyn's that survived the aftermath of Anne's and George's unfortunate demise.Elizabeth Boleyn thier mother died long after Anne's execution alone.Sir Thomas Boleyn died a little more than a year after Anne and George of heart failure.Mary Boleyn died 8 years after Anne and George of an illness proceeding child birth.Hope this helps.
Well she was about 14 and rather confused by the situation (hence the fact that at times she liked his attentions but other times she became scared particularly when he entered her room half dressed -- and she would protest on such occasions). This confusion is understandable; after all she was a young teenager who one hand liked the idea that an older man would find her attractive, but when he acted on this she became frightened and outraged.
The fact that Catherine Parr was involved probably fixed it in her mind that it was a game, and so she wouldn't be scared. Though, holding her while your stepfather cuts your dress to ribbions is abusive in itself.
Makes me think that Catherine Parr was the stepmother from hell.
But the fact she didn't protest, who would she protest to? Seymour was the King's uncle, and Parr was until she was re married the dowedger queen. Both would have been belived before Elizabeth.

dont judge them by our standards-they lived to be 50 if they were lucky-25 was middle age-to be 15 years of age was to be 25 years of age in our times-ie, nothing immoral to them about sleeping with a 15 year old

LadyPerseverance 3 years ago 4
You can't be too harsh on Jane. She was a pawn in Edward and Thomas' scheme for power, much in the same way Anne and Mary Boleyn were pawns of their family. The real evils are the families themselves. As for the Seymours, Edward was the greater evil of the two brothers.
waverunner2008 3 years ago 4
I don't get Catherine on her stand on this; historian Alison Weir said that sometimes Catherine helped Thomas and his advances toward Elizabeth (holding her down etc) but when she saw them together sometime she banished Elizabeth. What?
k10edd 3 years ago
it's denial. she didn't want to see what was going on, and if course women always get mad at the wrong person and never the guy
fleurgi 3 years ago 4
@k10edd i think that is one of those things where the mother figure or wife tends to put the blame on the child and not the man. catherine was prob. in denial and wrongly blames elizabeth instead of seymore.

can someone please tell me who Lady Jane Grey's (the 9 day queen) parents were. also, where did Thomas Seymour come from. Who was he related to?
Gvanillavodka 3 years ago
Lady Jane Grey's parents were Frances,Duchess of Suffolk and Henry Grey. Frances was the daughter of mary tudor (sister of henry VIII of england) and charles brandon. Thomas Seymour was the brother of jane seymour (king henry VIII's 3rd wife) and edward seymour. he was also the uncle of king edward VI (son of king henry VIII and queen jane).

I hate Thomas Seymour
Princesspeach2007 3 years ago 7
apparently she actually did have sex with him sort of rapish cos she is young but she consented and she did fall pregnant an miscarried when she was banished and supposedly ill. it was just a rumour tho. but it is the tudors after all i wouldnt be suprised if it was true!
bananabubblegum 3 years ago
There is absolutely no evidence that Elizabeth was ever pregnant with Seymour's child. There was a rumour that she was, and Elizabeth was furious at such rumours and even wrote to the Lord Protector asking to be allowed to go to court to show everyone that she was not pregnant. She lacked a confidante to hide a pregnancy. If she had been this would have been reported to the Council.

i can't believe cathrine parr just held her like that, she was her own step mother, and couldn't she see that he was a pervert!
njchristopher 3 years ago 2
no it wasnt quite like that they cut her gown as a joke because they both thought she had been in mourning of her father king henry too long. it was still out of order and i hink catherine really wanted to believe it was all innocent.
bananabubblegum 3 years ago
I thought that too...

yuck what a pervert he was. cutting her gown like that and coming into her bedchambers. She was just a confused girl of 14 who didn't know what to think of it!! poor elizabeth!

It was no wonder she was so weary of love and men. Considering the example her father set and then the drama with Thomas.

Thomas Seymour, you disgusting pervert! No wonder that creep got beheaded afterwards, he should have been ashamed of himself.
soprano123 3 years ago 6
Did he sexually abuse her or not? Or just molested her? Anyway, it's so sick, poor girl.
JustHenryThe8th 3 years ago 5
There is no evidence that they slept together. However what he was doing was inappropriate as he would enter her chambers not properly attired and when she was in bed. He was also said to embarrass her by slapping her on the buttocks which was viewed as highly indecent. Starkey argues that today we would see this as child abuse. Even though Elizabeth was of an age to marry by this period, it was still seen as indecent as Seymour was married and she was not (plus she was his wife's ward).

I have always wondered what happened to the Boleyn side of Elizabeths family, i no her mother and uncle george were killed for incest by henry but what about her aunt and her grandfather
luckylass456 3 years ago 4
She was close to her Carey cousins (Mary Boleyn's children). Her grandfather (Thomas Boleyn) died in 1539 and Mary Boleyn had retired in disgrace following her marriage to William Stafford. It is very likely that she never saw Elizabeth after her marriage.
littlemisssunnydale 3 years ago
when elizabeth came to power she gave her cousins/siblings greater titles

her grandfather died a bit after anne got beheaded and her aunt mary lived in the english country side with her new husband and two children.

Hi Lucky,Many people share in your curiosity about the other Boelyn's that survived the aftermath of Anne's and George's unfortunate demise.Elizabeth Boleyn thier mother died long after Anne's execution alone.Sir Thomas Boleyn died a little more than a year after Anne and George of heart failure.Mary Boleyn died 8 years after Anne and George of an illness proceeding child birth.Hope this helps.

she didnt protest
TonksPinkHairedGirl 3 years ago
Well she was about 14 and rather confused by the situation (hence the fact that at times she liked his attentions but other times she became scared particularly when he entered her room half dressed -- and she would protest on such occasions). This confusion is understandable; after all she was a young teenager who one hand liked the idea that an older man would find her attractive, but when he acted on this she became frightened and outraged.
littlemisssunnydale 3 years ago 2
yeah that is true
TonksPinkHairedGirl 3 years ago
The fact that Catherine Parr was involved probably fixed it in her mind that it was a game, and so she wouldn't be scared. Though, holding her while your stepfather cuts your dress to ribbions is abusive in itself.
Makes me think that Catherine Parr was the stepmother from hell.
But the fact she didn't protest, who would she protest to? Seymour was the King's uncle, and Parr was until she was re married the dowedger queen. Both would have been belived before Elizabeth.
