  • nice voice

  • Perfect vocals! Magnificent delivery. I do wish you had another verse (or even two) in the version you chose. I would have loved to heard more. Thank you.

  • Excellent job, with an eerie backing on the organ!

  • Well done man!

    Hi from Mexico city!

  • Bit of a dull video...

On the plus side, it sounds excellent, and you have a voice worthy of this song.

And hats off to "Crombie100" for pointing out that it's supposed to be sung by a man (or a lesbian?). Nothing against any of the female vocalists, but it's very "Bananarama" to rip off such a song just because it has a great tune.)

  • Truely an amazing version of such a wonderful song.... Heard so many singers sing this but this must be the best I heard.

  • This is an excellent version of a beautiful classic. Superb vulnerable, broken vocal and wonderfully laid back keyboard. Thank you!

  • very nice good job man

  • Beautiful, excellent job, enchantment wao!!!

  • I love this interpretation ,haunting voice just enough back ground music and this song was made for a guy to sing it,beautiful

  • Not Bad ...

  • choice Rob fantastic interpretation

  • I would love to walk down the aisle this year to this song....it's wonderful. thanks for posting

  • Well said wuzzaman, i am of kerry myself and have lived and traveled abroad extensively over the years, had the great pleasure of hearing irish songs sung by German, English,African people ,etc, much better than i,and we love them for it!

  • Very nice. And, I agree. This is a male song, interesting that most of the recordings are by women. Well done, Rob.

  • Very nice performance, nice to hear the song in male voice!

  • Bravo!

  • i would like to hear more too

  • i believe the words were written in 1909.. the actual melody/ song is far older, many claim it comes from midevil times. the song/ melody originates in County Donegal btw, same area where Enya and so much wonderful Irish music comes out of. this is a great rendition by Rob Yates. closest thing to the Sinead version in its epic intensity. thats saying alot cuz every other version pales in comparison to Sinead's. besides this one, which is great in its own right. thanks for posting!! BRAVO!!

  • It sounds really different with a male voice. Quite lovely. Have you seen Holly Kirby's version (Alpet07 on Youtube). I think that's pretty breathtaking too!

  • great to have a male voice, since the narrative is from a male perspective. One of the other videos of this has a comment that the tune is older but the words are from the 1800's

  • awesome!5*****

  • i liked almost every version of this song i ever heard, this one reminds me of Simple Minds "Belfast Child" version with the reverb.

GREAT JOB!!!! also ,can someone confirm this song really dates back to medieval

    times???

  • most sites claim that it does, I just asked my Irish boss.. he says it does!

  • thx for reply, ive seen different info on this, most sites say it was written by Herbert Hughes in 1909 but Wikipedia gives a hint that it may be much older, (im just not trusting Wikipedia i guess)

  • simple mids ripped it off ;)

  • heard 101 versions of this song yours is up there good on you slainte

  • Maith thú.

  • justin timberlake ornamentation doesnt go with irish trad

  • i agree,, hes gota get rid of the american accent from the tune,,, sound more gaelic in it Cara Dillons excellent at this

  • Cracking job! gave me chills at 3

  • gave me goosebumps love it

  • This is beautiful. I've heard many versions of this song, and this version compares very favorably to all of them.

You keep singing, laddie. Ignore the tin-ears and the ignorant. ;-)

  • From a true Celt...It's a bonny lad singing aboot his lost love...It has to be sung by a laddy..ye idyats

  • omg i totally luv this kind of music, it sounds all magical and cool

    xxxxx

  • gave me chills - very very nice!!

  • Very good. You don't oversing this like some people do. And your own twist at 1:09 and 2:16 are terrific.

  • It's written from the point of view of a guy so it makes less sense for a woman to sing it (even if female voices are more suited to this kind of music)

Jim Kerr from Simple minds does (or did) a good version of this

  • Simply breathtaking, Rob!

  • beautiful take the tune, ignore all these narrow minded idiots that haven't a clue about folk music! well done!

  • Very surreal feel. Great job!!

  • I think you did a great job on your version of this (one of my favorite songs). Nice filter on your voice though I do miss the accent.

  • this song reminds me of "lord of the rings".

    and I like it =)

  • get your finger out of your ass. i suppose you have strict rules for all styles and varieties of music? With your attitude there probably would be no music at all.

this is a fine rendition, well done the artist.

  • Man you're retarded and you give us Irish a bad name.

Songs can be sung by anyone regardless of nationality.

A Polish buddy of mine does "A Nation Once Again" better than I or most of my friends can sing it!

  • well done mate.. keep it up

  • Beautiful

  • WOW this is the most amazing version ive heard of the song...well done you have an amazing voice........

  • hauntingly beautiful, Mr. Yates...

    Laurie

  • Nicely done. Beautiful song.

    RonanG
