Perfect vocals! Magnificent delivery. I do wish you had another verse (or even two) in the version you chose. I would have loved to heard more. Thank you.
On the plus side, it sounds excellent, and you have a voice worthy of this song.

And hats off to "Crombie100" for pointing out that it's supposed to be sung by a man (or a lesbian?). Nothing against any of the female vocalists, but it's very "Bananarama" to rip off such a song just because it has a great tune.)
Well said wuzzaman, i am of kerry myself and have lived and traveled abroad extensively over the years, had the great pleasure of hearing irish songs sung by German, English,African people ,etc, much better than i,and we love them for it!
i believe the words were written in 1909.. the actual melody/ song is far older, many claim it comes from midevil times. the song/ melody originates in County Donegal btw, same area where Enya and so much wonderful Irish music comes out of. this is a great rendition by Rob Yates. closest thing to the Sinead version in its epic intensity. thats saying alot cuz every other version pales in comparison to Sinead's. besides this one, which is great in its own right. thanks for posting!! BRAVO!!
It sounds really different with a male voice. Quite lovely. Have you seen Holly Kirby's version (Alpet07 on Youtube). I think that's pretty breathtaking too!
great to have a male voice, since the narrative is from a male perspective. One of the other videos of this has a comment that the tune is older but the words are from the 1800's
thx for reply, ive seen different info on this, most sites say it was written by Herbert Hughes in 1909 but Wikipedia gives a hint that it may be much older, (im just not trusting Wikipedia i guess)

have to agree with theshedi only an irish person can really sing this song whats the whining in the middle all about just sing the fucking song.one thing tho while i agree a woman should sing it i think a fellow would get away with it
It's written from the point of view of a guy so it makes less sense for a woman to sing it (even if female voices are more suited to this kind of music)
Jim Kerr from Simple minds does (or did) a good version of this

several problems here! if your not a woman dont sing it it only ever sounds good from a womans voice! & for the love of God if your not from ireland dont sing it cause you havent the purity in your voice which only comes from an irish accent!
get your finger out of your ass. i suppose you have strict rules for all styles and varieties of music? With your attitude there probably would be no music at all.

This is an excellent version of a beautiful classic. Superb vulnerable, broken vocal and wonderfully laid back keyboard. Thank you!

Very nice. And, I agree. This is a male song, interesting that most of the recordings are by women. Well done, Rob.

Man you're retarded and you give us Irish a bad name.
Songs can be sung by anyone regardless of nationality.
A Polish buddy of mine does "A Nation Once Again" better than I or most of my friends can sing it!
