The gender roles being so blatant is one of the aspects that bothered me in Tangled. That and Rapunzel never left the tower until a guy came along. Particularly that Flynn is guy who was at the start going to take advantage of her naivete. I mean, it's admittedly a hard concept to have her stay up there for 18 years, but still.
Wow! Who's teaching these media courses? I want to congratulate them. The students sound young but are very eloquent and understand how to deconstruct stereotypes and story lines. However, I do have qualms with the assessment of The Little Mermaid. Why didn't she sacrifice her voice for legs in order to go learn from the human world, her original desire, and not the prince? We're back to square one. All that girls really want is to find true love.
This gender role is a bit sexist and percieves men as incompotent as beig a narrator since there is more female voices being introduced than male... Haha what kind of hogwash is this? Gender roles is the very least bit of whats on a childs mind when watching disney movies... These chicks narrating these videos are brainwashed...
@torrentXofXdarkness Not all women are the same, not all men are the same. Not all people are fully male or female. No one is fully male or female, in fact. We are all more or less masculine than others. It is a scale, a gradient.
The thing is that as a rule, women are far more suited for passive tasks than physical tasks. We have roughly only 50% of an average man's physical strength, much less stamina, and about 63% of their ability to withstand injuries. Our biological differences have a lot to do with the formation of gender roles. It became a general consensus that tasks were better left to people that were naturally better suited for them; physical to men, and passive to women.
@LadyRuin2012 This doesn't make sense. I am bigger than many men I see, and many men are bigger than me. I see a huge variety of sizes and shapes among men and women, and so do you.
Besides, passive doesn't have anything to do with weakness, it has to do with being invisible.
I heard somewhere that the reason they called it "Tangled" rather than "Rapunzel" is they were concerned that boys wouldn't go see it as the title suggests a girl film. Hence the Flynn side stories.
Thank God I stuck to Anime and the Power Rangers as a kid. I can't do all that freakin' romance and lovey-doviness. I need some kickassness and badassness.
Am I the only one disturbed by the fact that in Rapunzel, judging by the girl's figure, she's looking like a 14-year-old (and for her character, she's also presented as playful, cheerful, naive..) while he's obviously depicted as a young adult (beard, muscular, broad shoulders..)?
@nilti by actually i mean that she actually not 14 -_-
also what do you expect? shes naive because shes been trapped in a fricking tower for 18 years, shes playful because she has nothing else to do in the tower, and shes cheerful, because shes... a disney princess, The guy is muscular and has broad shoulders because hes a dude and he has a beard because if we look at it they probably have like a 2 year difference? and most guys have beards by the time they are 20. she seems younger because

...Rapunzel falls for Flynn after he tries to trick her, not whilst he is tricking her so that argument is invalid

I always thought the audience liked Flynn because he was funny and has a likable personality.

It seems like some people in some Disney films don't have jobs. They can be selling gravy or something.

@ThunderstormingLove
whatever meaning there is to the term 'actually' when describing fictional characters..
she seems way younger in comparison to him, and that's the whole point.

@ThunderstormingLove "because shes... a disney princess, The guy is muscular and has broad shoulders because hes a dude"
"because he's a dude"- that's the point! not all "dudes" are muscular, not all "chicks" aren't. Deal with it.
