@sprachbegeistert I speak English and Italian best, fluent Spanish, conversational French, and am learning German. I'm in my first year of university still, have time to perfect and add more!
Wow, you got yourself an impressive list of languages already and I'm sure you'll have enough time to add more as time goes by (you obviously are still very young). I wish you all the best for your future projects. I think it is great you give German a chance even though many people think it is quite a harsh language and does not sound as pleasant as most Romance languages for example. I love it though but I may be biased since it is my mother tongue :-)
Know German quite well (I can understand well but can't write that much.. :( )
currently studying German and Japanese... (with German as a main target... after mastering German, going to have Japanese as the main target and French or Latin (ancient language, not Spanish) besides it)... :)
Wow that's so cool! I hope one day to learn a lot of languages as well. I already speak English and Spanish but I've taken a lot of classes in other languages, although I'm not fluent in anymore. Great video!
He intentado explicar mis metodos para aprender un nuevo idioma en mi video intitulado "My way of learning languages". Espero que este video le ayudará. Muchos saludos desde Austria.
i got so happy because i realized mid way of the italian part that you were speaking italian! i understood anyway. thats a good sign i thiiiiink:) lol
wow you are such an inspiration!!!!!!! i hope to be good in languages like you!!! i speak english and spanish already. i am learning french in high school and italian on my own .i love languages !!!!
Thank you very much for your kind words. With French and Italian you have chosen two beautiful languages. I wish you all the best for your future learning projects.
Thanks for your video ..Pleasure viewing it... you come across as a very amicable personality...someone anyone would love to know :)
I speak German and French among the foreign languages ( basic level). I am looking for youtube videos with with subs in the original language and translation in German / French.
I seem you have run out of all videos that i can easily find...can you send me some links ( possibly films )
Thank you very much for your kind words. I am afraid I don't know of any youtube videos in German/French with English subtitles. You may find some on the site of "Deutsche Welle". As far as I know they offer language courses for German including some videos.
Ti faccio i miei complimenti. Sei davvero bravo a parlare in italiano e ho sentito solo pochissimi errori!
I am interested in learning Spanish and also French. Both these language are different than my mother tongue coz i am an Indian and i know only English. I watch you tube videos and language videos that teach. i haven't invested in any language books or cd as i can't right now. How do i go abt this
Try to find podcasts for both languages and keep watching those youtube videos you mentioned. You could also try to go to language exchange sites such as livemocha and sharedtalk. There is another site you might want to try out, it's called lingq. Youtube doesn't allow me to write out the entire link but if you google liveomocha, sharedtalk and lingq you'll find all the information you need. Hope that helps.

Hi everybody ! I´m studying English and French at university and I´d like to practise these languages. I´m also interested in learning Spanish. If there is someone who could help me, please write me a message ! I could teach you some Slovak if you want :)
Thank you, you are very kind even though I'm pretty sure there are many extremely capable people out there on youtube. But I admit that I find your words flattering ;-)
You should not feel robbed, especially since you are still very young. I'm sure you'll be able to learn to speak many more languages if you want. I have tried to explain my own learning process in some of my videos. If you have any special question which I may not have dealt with in those videos, you are more than welcome to send me a PM and I'll try to do my best to provide you with an answer. Thank you for your comment and good luck.
Thanks for the reply. I'll go watch more of your videos =)
(I'm planning on learning (fluently) french, german and icelandic. Have had some experience with the first two in high school; icelandic, however, is new to me. My mother tongue is swedish.)
Grazie, sei molto gentile. L'italiano l'ho studiato prima a scuola e poi all'università.
Hola, soy española, I study english and french at school mais je veux apprendre l`Italien et l'allemande.
Thank you for your comment. If you have skype, I'll add you to my list of skype contacts but I have to admit that I'm not always online since I'm rather busy with work. All the best for your studies.
awesome, this must of taken ages to learn all thease languages, tell me i would love to stay abroad and learn italian, would this be good to learn the lanuguage and have you done something similar, thanks!
Thanks for your nice words. Learning a new language always takes quite a bit of time and a lot of dedication. Going abroad to study a language is a good idea, however, I believe you will benefit most from your stay if you have at least a basic understanding of the language and a vocabulary that allows you to get by in daily life before you leave for your destination. I learnt most my Spanish in Ecuador for example.
I come from England and we are only taught other languages until much to late to gain fluency unless more education is taken. My dream is able to speak English and German at least!
I'm sure you'll make your dream come true since you seem to be really motivated. And motivation is one of the most important parts of any learning process (at least in my opinion).
Well, I've been studying English for a long time, and my native language is Portuguese, so I could understand the English and all the Spanish part as well (I've never studied Spanish). But there's something, I am studying French (I am just a beginner) but I could understand the Italian part as well. I probably understood 85% of the Italian and 60% of the French. Is that because of vocabulary similarity? Because I've never studied Italian.
Romance languages share a lot of similarities, especially with regard to their vocabulary. Nevertheless, I find it amazing that you understood about 85 % of the Italian without ever having studied it. I understand quite a bit of written Portuguese but would probably not even understand 10 % of spoken Portuguese because your pronunciation is quite different from your spelling. In any case I think it is great you take such an interest in foreign languages.
@sprachbegeistert "I understand quite a bit of written Portuguese but would probably not even understand 10 % of spoken Portuguese because your pronunciation is quite different from your spelling." - Wasn't this a problem by learning French?
Thanks a lot for your input, I really appreciate it. You obviously don't just learn a language but you seem to be really keen on learning more about the culture related to the language you study and I think that is great.
Thanks a lot for your nice comment. Are you bilingual (since you stated you speak English and Spanish, with Spanish being your main language)? Do you also speak Portuguese?
It's great to hear that you are passionate about learning French. I'm sure you'll greatly benefit from any further language you learn. All the best to you :-)
hi! I'm Italian (mother tongue), your Italian is awesome! you sound like a person from the north area (Milan or Turin, maybe) and just on the final part I can realise that you're German. conditional and subjunctive: maybe you know more about them than the half of my connationals ;)
Thank you for your nice comment, I really appreciate it. Btw, I'm responding in English because you left your comment in English as well ;-) My favourite professor at university was from Milan - she was a real gem and one of the nicest people I have ever met. We shared so many laughs and had some fantastic discussions. Attending her classes was like meeting a good friend...I wish there were more teachers like her...
I can't believe you speak so many languages! I'm Mexican and I know español, ingles, and right now I'm learning français but it's too hard to understand when some one is speaking.... They talk to fast and nothing sounds like the words.... But the words do look like Spanish but the way u say them is difficult... Any tips?
Thank you for your kind words. I'd suggest that you listen to a text spoken in French and read it at the same time. Try to get an audio book and then get the printed version of that book. You can then listen to the words as they are spoken by native speakers and read the words at the same time. I'm sure that will help. You can also try to get easy readers first, if standard audiobooks are too fast for you.
Vielen Dank für deinen netten Kommentar. Dein Deutsch klingt hervorragend.
What would you say classifies a person to be fluent in a second language? Or in other words, how can one find out if they've gained fluency in a foreign language?
To me fluency means that you are able to hold a conversation on any topic you are interested in. This does not mean that you need to know every single word related to a topic, but you need to be able to ask what a specific term means and understand the explanations given. You should be able to read newspapers, understand movies. Use of proper grammar also is an indicator of fluency to me (making mistakes is OK, but we should not "butcher" a language ;-).
Ehrlich gesagt, nein.
@sprachbegeistert fluency and grammar?...:/....After I've watched the movie Clash of the Titans, I understood that it is alright to use improper grammar. There was a guy in the movie who asked "What he say?". After this, NAAH... fuck the grammar!
when i heard your italian i was shoked that if you didnt do those 2-3 letter-mistakes you'd sound italian (and trust me its not easy), your pronunciation is extrmely close to native level, i realistically believe you could speak with 100 italians for 5 minutes each, just 30 of them could doubt your nationality
I dominate 8 languages and currently learn the 9th (Italian) those are- Armenian,Danish, Russian, Portuguese,English, Spanish, Norwegian and Hebrew :)
Wow, that is truly amazing. Your choice of languages is very interesting. It would be nice to see a video of you speaking all these languages. I'm sure language enthusiasts on youtube (like me, for example) would benefit a lot from it. There are few videos out there of people who study Hebrew so I would be especially interested in a video where you speak Hebrew :-)
@sprachbegeistert Thank you :) You gave me a great idea. I will definitely make a video like yours, as soon as I get a video camera. Hebrew is very interesting and quite difficult at the same time. But learning Hebrew you achieve a key to arabic and Greek languages :)
@sprachbegeistert This is probably a silly question, but do you read books in other languages than your native language? If so, what are the languages you read books in?
No, your question is not silly at all ;-) Yes, I read books in other languages than German. Mostly in my working languages though (English, Italian, French and Spanish). I also read books in Russian. I have not yet read any books in Croatian. I have read a few short stories in Japanese and Chinese (I'm currently listening to a rather thick Chinese novel on my MP3 player while reading it at the same time. That helps a lot and is quite enjoyable).
You are welcome. Yes, I like Taibei. I went there once in 2006 for a business trip, although I wasn't learning Chinese then. I enjoyed the trip and agree that Taibei is a very nice city.
I'm Austrian but quite a few people think I speak English with some sort of a "North American" accent. Actually, I think my accent is mixed and it changes depending on who I talk to (over an extended period of time). Most of my clients are from North America, so I guess that has influenced my way of speaking as well. Anyway, thanks a lot for your interest in my videos.
Excellent video. I learn 4 languages myself. French, German, Chinese and Spanish, however I started relatively older than most people. I don't worry about starting later, I just wish I'd been able to start to study these languages when I was much younger. I think your videos are inspriring. By the way I visited Austria for the first time in April this year and really found it a beautiful country.
Thank you very much for your comment. I'm really glad you liked Austria and hope you met some nice people. I'm always happy to hear that people enjoyed their stay in my home country. Your choice of languages is very interesting. As long as you enjoy what you are doing, age does not matter. By the way, Taipei is a great place to practise your Chinese (I'm in Taipei right now and will be flying home this weekend). Friendly people, excellent food, very safe city...
Well, as for my working languages, I practise them almost daily because I use them in my daily work. With regard to my other languages, it depends on my command of them. The less I know, the more I need to practise. I try to listen, speak, read and write at least 5 to 6 hours a week in any language that I'm still learning at a beginner's or intermediate level. After that it probably gets down to 3 to 4 hours a week for each language.
Yes, you are right, I was speaking very fast in German. One reason for that certainly is the fact that German is my mother tongue and another may be that when I interpret into German I also have to speak much faster because German tends to be a lot longer than English for example. So you have to speed up if you want to make sure you say everything the speaker says.
Actually, I am Austrian. I know my accent changes quite a bit during this video. I guess that has to do with the fact that my mother tongue is German and I tend to change my accent according to the people I talk to. I don't really do that intentionally, it just seems to happen subconsciously.
Thank you very much for your comment. May I ask where you come from (just out of curiosity, since your name on your youtube site suggests that you are a native speaker of Spanish)? Anyway, I really appreciate your interest in my videos.
I see, thanks for your answer. So far, the only Latin American countries I have been to are Ecuador, Columbia (only for a few days), Peru, Mexico and Cuba. But I must say that I have always enjoyed the hospitality and friendliness of the local people. Living conditions are sometimes quite harsh and some countries have serious safety issues. Nevertheless Latin America is one of the most exciting (and diverse) places I have been to so far.
Well, my Mexican sister-in-law would never say that she speaks "castellano". But you may have met other Mexicans (or even be Mexican yourself, I have no idea) who think differently ;-) It takes all sorts to make a world ;-) Thanks for watching my videos. I really appreciate it.
@sprachbegeistert yeah i would agree with sprach i myself am south american and i have never heard any south american or mexican or central american in fact saying they speak castellano. The clearest spanish i have heard is colombian spanish and they dont say that either.
is not true, actually spanish is castellano too for everyone so u can say u speak español or castellano just castellano was used long ago and ppl just stop using it
@ExOsiLe No, Mexicans refer to it as Español. Southern Americans and Spanish tend to refer to it as Castellano, which means, "Castillian," the dialect more specific to Spain.
Hi Robert. Thank you for this very nice and intelligent video.
I share your passion for foreign languages (trying to improve my English, French and Spanish right now), and what's more, I have a dream to work as an interpreter and translator one day.
Thanks a lot for your nice comment. If you really want to become an interpreter and translator, I'm sure you'll be able to make your dream come true. Including your mother tongue Russian, the languages you have chosen are an excellent choice for an interpreter and/or translator.
heyyy I am studyng langugagues I want to practice German and English because I am interested to learn this languages I love learning languages so I hope that we could practice English and German. my mother tongue is Spanish ty let me know if you want to it. I have an account by skype ty have anice day
Thanks for your comment. I'm not always online (since I'm quite busy) but we can try to contact each other from time to time. However, I cannot promise you to be available for regular chats.
Thank you very much for your nice comment. I spent a few days in Colombia when I used to work as a volunteer in Ecuador and I really liked it. Well, I was there with a couple of friends and if you are hosted by friends I guess it is always a nice experience. Anyway, that was a long time ago.....
Ho 16 anni e vivo a Genova.
Wow! That is amazing! My native tongue is English and I am in my fourth year of Spanish. I have argued with narrow minded people here in the states that question my thirst to speak in foreign languages that language is a gift, and a beautiful one at that! You are inspirational and I plan to study as many languages possible.
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. It is feedback like this that keeps me from deleting my channel when yet another "friendly" youtube member reproaches me with putting up my videos only to show off. I am just trying to share my love for languages, that is all. I never intended and never claimed to teach anybody anything or know anything better than anybody else out there. Well, I guess some people just won't get it (or they just don't want to get it ;-). Cheers, Robert
Comparto tu pasion por los lenguajes! Tengo 15 años y hablo Español, es mi idioma nativo y aprendi Ingles..y ahora estoy aprendiendo Aleman. Y me encanta aprender nuevos lenguajes. And I would like to study something related to languages..pero no se de carreras asi como de traductor. I'll apprecite it a lot.
Slavic languages are beautiful, aren't they? Their grammar tends to be rather complicated but I love the way they sound. Besides, you may understand quite a bit of other slavic languages (at least in their written form), once you have studied one of them. I think it is great that you make an effort to study languages on your own. Best wishes and good luck for your future language projects!
Hey, I'm a 16 year old boy who loves learning foreign languages and wishes to become a polyglot one day. I made my first video today as an introduction to what's about to be posted on my channel. I'd appreciate it very much if you guys'd go and take a look at it. :)
I come from Albania but i've been living in Italy since I was 4.
Hi!... wel my name is Eduardo, i'm from Chile. I'm studying Tranlation and Interpretation so, this is my firts year. I'd like to share some information, i'll show this video to my classmates. I really like this career for languages and other things. Take care!
You speak Spanish so well!!!!! When you started I did notice a little Mexican accent, but then I said, never mine, is more of a Spanish/Castillian accent, and then you explained yourself. I love languages too, I have a passion for them, and I hope one day I can speak as many languages as you do, and so well. I also love getting to know new cultures.
I speak 4 of these same languages and am learning the fifth. great motivational video!

Hi
I am interested in learning Spanish and also French. Both these language are different than my mother tongue coz i am an Indian and i know only English. I watch you tube videos and language videos that teach. i haven't invested in any language books or cd as i can't right now. How do i go abt this
deepamela1 3 weeks ago
@deepamela1

Grazie, sei molto gentile. L'italiano l'ho studiato prima a scuola e poi all'università.
FedericoConcas 1 month ago
@FedericoConcas

MattRodrig 1 month ago
@MattRodrig

What would you say classifies a person to be fluent in a second language? Or in other words, how can one find out if they've gained fluency in a foreign language?
Munsonelli 2 months ago
@Munsonelli
To me fluency means that you are able to hold a conversation on any topic you are interested in. This does not mean that you need to know every single word related to a topic, but you need to be able to ask what a specific term means and understand the explanations given. You should be able to read newspapers, understand movies. Use of proper grammar also is an indicator of fluency to me (making mistakes is OK, but we should not "butcher" a language ;-).
sprachbegeistert 2 months ago 7
lbb2r 1 week ago
@lbb2r
Ehrlich gesagt, nein.
sprachbegeistert 2 days ago
@sprachbegeistert fluency and grammar?...:/....After I've watched the movie Clash of the Titans, I understood that it is alright to use improper grammar. There was a guy in the movie who asked "What he say?". After this, NAAH... fuck the grammar!

when i heard your italian i was shoked that if you didnt do those 2-3 letter-mistakes you'd sound italian (and trust me its not easy), your pronunciation is extrmely close to native level, i realistically believe you could speak with 100 italians for 5 minutes each, just 30 of them could doubt your nationality

After that it probably gets down to 3 to 4 hours a week for each language.

vlogtronica 3 months ago
@vlogtronica

Thank you. Your comment is very flattering. Sorry for responding so late but I had a few health issues and then I was really busy with work.
