I partially disagree that Schumann is a "difficult composer to understand". He is the musician adolescents pianists tend to fall naturally in love with - true romantic stuff, even more than Chopin or Liszt. Understanding the mechanism of his music is another matter all together, empathy for Schumann music is very common for a young musician ;-)

The only reason why Schumann didn't manage to become a great piano virtuoso is because he injured his fingers/hands while trying on his hands, devices that are attached to the hand to improve his piano-playing ability.
