Well this movie was made in 79...Not many movies back then weren't cheesy, with crappy effects, well compared to what we have now. But it don't matter, i love all the Phantasm movies :) hate on, haters!
Umm...after watching this clip, I am trying to remember why this movie scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. Why is it when the ball starts drilling for blood, the only thing I can think is, "Hey Kool Aid!"
Never mind the Chinese Hot Mustard that sprays all over the walls when the boy cuts his fingers off.
Thank God I resisted the temptation to buy this DVD. It seems kinda silly now.
It scared the hell outta everyone when they were kids, but obviously wont do now. You are just judging this now against the latest horror films, which is wrong. This films is still one of the best of its genre and is excellently fimed/scripted. Coscarelli is a genius, one day you may realise this

I would like to see the freaky scene where the kid picks up a finger a souvenir knowing that it was still moving, which eventually it mutated and became crazy muppet killer bee. That scene was hilarious. I can't still remember the face of that crazy killer bee. LOL
After the alien took over Jebediah Morningside body . It made clones of its self. This explains why for example . tall man dies in phantasm 2. shows beginning phantasm 3 comes through gate brand new and throws dead tall man body through the gate.....
Good... But don't discard the dimension idea. Jebediah might've discovered its secrets in the 1800's and used it to his purposes, so he'd be able to even predict what would happen to him in a given dimension.
But if the tall man that got blowed up with teh car was the same exact tall man coming through the gate he would have looked straight forward no slight eye movment left and right as if looking to say where is that boy....
he would have known he would be straight in front...... This lead me to draw out the conclusion of why the tall man can die.and then he comes back out of the gate and his body is laying dead on the floor like phantasm 2

Yeah. I know of those movies. Charles Band made Dolls before Puppet Master. Wish Master was okay, and the Phantasm movies are great. Can you get Phantasm comics or side novels?
Phantasm is a pretty damn good film. Sure, it's cheesy but what horror movie isn't? If you can look past the cheese factor, there are some pretty cool suspense sequences, great soundtrack, and pretty funny lines. I don't think the directors intended on outdoing Citizen Kane, so stop trying to analyze it to the core and just enjoy it for what it is!
Awesome movie, creative scenes and for its budget, great actors and special effects for the time. I love the tall man walking scene in the town...that kinda cinematography you still see to this day

i found two plot hole:
1-when tht bore drills itself into the head of the guy who gets bitten all the blood that squirts from his head is not seen on the floor in front of him even though it was in that direction.
2-When theman gets is fingers chopped off there is yellow blood. So i figure they got lazy or ran outta red paint.
Firstly, those are not holes in the plot. Or Anything to DO with the Plot whatsoever. Secondly, you are correct about the "Continuity" problem regarding the "Missing" blood from the Bore. But, As for the Yellow "Blood" From The Tall Man's hand.He is NOT HUMAN.Therefore he is not required to display the usual Red pigment normally associated with "Blood" Lastly/ The movie may "Look ShitHouse" to you, but in the day this was Scary stuff. Hell, it spawned what? Three sequels?
At 3.00 minutes the door is seen fully closed as the boy boards the door, there is no sign of any hand stuck in the crack. However at 3:05 minutes the hand is seen crushed in the metal door, so i figure cuz this old fucker has yellow blood he did an elastic man trick from the fantasic four.
oh yeah btw just because three other movies spawned from it doesnt make the series good. Maniac cop & high school musical are perfect examples of bad trilogies.
Keep in mind that this was an independent film with a very small budget. Don Coscarelli had to get financing from his father, his mother handled wardrobe as well as some special FX, and cast friends and family in some of the small roles. You have to be inventive with what little money you have, so don't go expectin LOTR caliber special effects.
There need to be a V, to close the door and finish the story once in for all, IV really left me hanging. All I wanna know is how Ol Talley became Evil? I know he made the dimensional door back in looks like the 1800's, and in that scene where T.M walk through the Portal and Jodie says, "the real Morningside never comes back". So there is a need for 1 more.
these series owes me a sequal. the final one left you on a clif hanger, where the lead character got taken away from the tall man. we didnt even know what happen to him..
There's a question. I'm pretty sure a tall sixty year old without joint problems and who's in good health can run down and murder a scrawny 12 year old, but we'll never know till we try...

Yes it is, the movie was almost rated X because of that but the director I believe called someone on the ratings board, who was his friend, to get it approved.
Oh man what a blast from the past. This movie scared the hell out of me when it first came out, there was so much imaginative gross out effects for the time. And that creepy omnipresent high pitched electronic hum over the soundtrack! Really added to the tense nature. This was a lot of fun. All these years later, who can forget those "juicers" punching into people's craniums & spitting their brains out? The urine leaking out of the twitching pants was an added touch, very sick for the time.
I saw this back in the 80's and laughed my heiney off!

Originally the Tall Man was supposed to be defeated by being sprayed from a Fire Extinguisher. This would explain the Ice Cream scene.

Oh man what a blast from the past. This movie scared the hell out of me when it first came out, there was so much imaginative gross out effects for the time. And that creepy omnipresent high pitched electronic hum over the soundtrack! Really added to the tense nature. This was a lot of fun. All these years later, who can forget those "juicers" punching into people's craniums & spitting their brains out? The urine leaking out of the twitching pants was an added touch, very sick for the time.
