the navara will be better of road as it has a limted slip diff so 3 wheels will always spin and a land rover even with diff lock only 1 wheel wheel spin.i have had loads of land rover from new to old they r over rated good work horse but wont take to much abuse.

My ford transit county 4X4 has got a better diff lock and 100% more comfortable to drive for example, You dont have to put the drivers side window down to drive it comfortability, when looking right you see out of the window and not a seat belt bracket.
The interior has changed alot over the years like glove boxes etc to make it nicer not like a land rover defender.
The centre diff lock, which is what comes with all standard defenders as they are permanent 4 wheel drive.
The rear wheels are still in contact with the ground so if the diff was locked the front wheels could spin all day long because the rear wheels would push it up and over.
if the navara is so good off road why do the army have defenders is it because they can go just about any were? they also dont have a name like THE BEST 4X4XFAR do they!!!!!
dunno how much you know about offroading, but when climbing and decending a step incline length is the main concern, the navara will do better than a landrover (given the same tyres) up a sttep hill just because its longer. The landrover is a better all rounder, all 4x4's need some kind of modification for serious offroad use, (ie bigger nobblier tyres, snorkel and often bigger suspention),and the landrover needs the least modification, and is the easies and chepest to modd.
at malaysia have nissan frontier and navara . But navara at malaysia using commanrail engine . The expensive double cab at malaysia (Japan 4x4) . I no see the car yet , but i think it have good quality .
Defender is very capable 4x4 but very unreliable too. Evey part is very cheap and bad quality. Toyota is much better in any term and most of Japanese 4x4 too.
Defender is not bad quality.. its literally a pain in the ass to try and make one go bad. I left mine undriven in a barn for three years - all it needed was a change of most rubber including tires because rubber rots. Then it ran perfectly.
the defender could have easily got over that. the driver just doesnt know what hes doing, Nissans are only made for a tax dodge for builders, the approach and departure angles on a nissan means an angry speedbump could remove that plastic trim item aka the bumper
why didn't the defender have it's diff lock on? if it had it would have got through no bother as the ECU would have realised that the wheel was just spinning and given all the power to the other front wheel, also the guy in the nissan had time to sit and watch what the guy in the defender did so he had that in his favour

I've read most of the comments here, and there is a lot of debate over which is better: the Nissan or the Defy. I have owned both vehicles and honestly in 98% of off-road situations the Defender (or any Land Rover for that matter) is the superior truck (low range gearbox and amazing wheel articulation is a Rover trademark), given that the person behind the wheel knows what they are doing. The Nissan is a decent vehicle, but it doesn't come with 50+yrs of off-roading experience under the belt.

The new nissan D40 allthough not quite as good as a land rover off road ,can blow the doors off one in every other department! The D40 aint just super qwick ,its good off road as well,i have taken a fair few land rovers from my farmer customers in as PXs against new nisssan D40s! my family must have had 30 various Land rover and never had an unreliable one apart from a very old high miled hard worked Range Rover 3.5EFI which was my field car when I was like 14. it rusted through, fair enough but we even have a Range Rover Supercharged now and it's beautifully reliable.had 88s, Discos, Freelander, Range Rovers, all been great

Defenders are fantastic in my memory(having never owned one I'm going on many friends experience).However I understand that all the US models are V8?99.9% of ours are diesel.That's no bad thing, that V8 and the gearbox(most are automatic I think)can be seen to by anyone who knows old Discos and Range Rovers and it's a great combo.Don't blame me if you're unlucky, but in my experience Defenders are absolutely great.Let me know if you get one!

Im not a Landrover owner but i must say this proves nothing.
If that navara attempted to do what ive seen LRovers & hilux surfs do it would get into serious trouble & eventually would break.
The only small advantage the nissan has is having more power which possibly helped it in this situation.
Land rover defender is a proper 4x4.
The nissan navara is a pick-up with limited off road abilities.
The Hilux has the best of both worlds.
I know because i own one.

The transit is better because the front wheels are locked so a least 3 wheels will be turning (thats 2 front and at least 1 rear)not like a land rovers 1 front and 1 rear.

well thats what I and I think the others were trying to say when you kept saying what diff lock.
The main reason a land rover does not need axle lockers is because of the massive axle articulation given by the coil spring set up.
I think i am correct in saying the navara and a transit are still on cart springs ( NAVARA on rear only)?
But has I have said before with no diff lock engaged on the defender it might as well be in one wheel drive which is what happened to the defender in question

I know all about the DIFF LOCK / high,low lever.
It's the centre DIFF LOCK that's a joke!
If you read the comments above you will see:
[ Land rovers DONT have a proper diff-lock unless they have air lockers fitted.
The land rover diff-lock gear stick was in diff-lock low. ]
The centre diff when it is locked does NOT mean that all 4 wheels are locked.

The centre diff lock lock the front and rear axle and work like any other diff lock.
You are talking about axle locker which lock the diffs in the axles.
If the land rover had its diff lock engaged that track would not have been a problem because its rear wheels would have pushed him over.
As for answering my question I dont think so!
I have been around land rovers all my life and I have worked on them and with them.

When i say a land rover hasn't got diff lock i was taking the piss because all 4 wheels dont lock.
My ford transit county 4X4 has got a better diff lock and 100% more comfortable to drive for example, You dont have to put the drivers side window down to drive it comfortability, when looking right you see out of the window and not a seat belt bracket.
The interior has changed alot over the years like glove boxes etc to make it nicer not like a land rover defender.

The centre diff lock, which is what comes with all standard defenders as they are permanent 4 wheel drive.
The rear wheels are still in contact with the ground so if the diff was locked the front wheels could spin all day long because the rear wheels would push it up and over.

dunno how much you know about offroading, but when climbing and decending a step incline length is the main concern, the navara will do better than a landrover (given the same tyres) up a sttep hill just because its longer. The landrover is a better all rounder, all 4x4's need some kind of modification for serious offroad use, (ie bigger nobblier tyres, snorkel and often bigger suspention),and the landrover needs the least modification, and is the easies and chepest to modd.

Defender is very capable 4x4 but very unreliable too. Evey part is very cheap and bad quality. Toyota is much better in any term and most of Japanese 4x4 too.

Defender is not bad quality.. its literally a pain in the ass to try and make one go bad. I left mine undriven in a barn for three years - all it needed was a change of most rubber including tires because rubber rots. Then it ran perfectly.

the defender could have easily got over that. the driver just doesnt know what hes doing, Nissans are only made for a tax dodge for builders, the approach and departure angles on a nissan means an angry speedbump could remove that plastic trim item aka the bumper

why didn't the defender have it's diff lock on? if it had it would have got through no bother as the ECU would have realised that the wheel was just spinning and given all the power to the other front wheel, also the guy in the nissan had time to sit and watch what the guy in the defender did so he had that in his favour

1st thing i noticed no lock on. why does everyone try to rubbish a defender? because its the 4x4 to beat. the more you spend the better your truck put any box standard 4x4 against a standard defender and you will not beat it. every 4x4 company wants the fame the same as the defender. 70% of every land rover ever built is still on the road thats over 60 years. it works anything else is just trying to copy.

I have both in my garage right now. I only can tell you, the Defender is better for off road, no matter what. For anything else, Nissan is better. However, I love to be in my LR, it's not a common car right here

I've read most of the comments here, and there is a lot of debate over which is better: the Nissan or the Defy. I have owned both vehicles and honestly in 98% of off-road situations the Defender (or any Land Rover for that matter) is the superior truck (low range gearbox and amazing wheel articulation is a Rover trademark), given that the person behind the wheel knows what they are doing. The Nissan is a decent vehicle, but it doesn't come with 50+yrs of off-roading experience under the belt.

listen guys ,i am in the motor trade and i buy and sell new used 4x4s, Land rovers are great but they can get stuck like any other,their good off road but thats it! The new nissan D40 allthough not quite as good as a land rover off road ,can blow the doors off one in every other department! The D40 aint just super qwick ,its good off road as well,i have taken a fair few land rovers from my farmer customers in as PXs against new nisssan D40s! Those new nissan D40s are selling like hot cakes!

my family must have had 30 various Land rover and never had an unreliable one apart from a very old high miled hard worked Range Rover 3.5EFI which was my field car when I was like 14. it rusted through, fair enough but we even have a Range Rover Supercharged now and it's beautifully reliable.had 88s, Discos, Freelander, Range Rovers, all been great

What's going on dude. You are as close to an expert on Land Rovers as one can get. I love DEFENDERS, however I'm in the U.S. and can only get a used one. I really wanted to know if it is just as reliable as a Toyota (I have a Toyota now and love it, but they don't have the appeal of a go anywhere DEFENDER). Salaam.

Defenders are fantastic in my memory(having never owned one I'm going on many friends experience).However I understand that all the US models are V8?99.9% of ours are diesel.That's no bad thing, that V8 and the gearbox(most are automatic I think)can be seen to by anyone who knows old Discos and Range Rovers and it's a great combo.Don't blame me if you're unlucky, but in my experience Defenders are absolutely great.Let me know if you get one!
